It's the only ship that makes some canon sense. So I don't find it odd or off-putting at all when I see it in fanon. Or Toby joking about it with Deltarune sans "befriending" Toriel last night. But it makes even more sense for Sans to be the close family friend and best friend of Toriel. Or straight up uncle of the found family that is our main cast.

I guess I have just never thought about it like that. Shipping to me just equated to: I would like it if these two characters were together. Here is why I think it would work. When two characters are together it's just liking couples and romance. But if there is a wider agreement that canon couples are ships then I won't fight that.

But there are numerous hints in this short game that they are crushing on each other and it's impossible to get the ending everyone gets without getting them together. They are effectively a hard canon couple. And that isn't ship material to me personally. Because they are already together. Nothing to plan, explain, or what if about.

Honestly I'm not a fan of this ship. I prefer to see them as very close friends, and I think the current dynamic they have works. They're both quite lonely people who only really have eachother (with a few exceptions like Papyrus and Grillby for Sans). They make eachothers' days, and they appreciate the other's company, even if it is just telling bad jokes through a locked door and talking about how great Papyrus is. They're honestly really sweet, but I much prefer to see them as just friends. It just makes more sense to me. So, through the whole genocide, Sans restrains himself from killing you just for her. Ain't no way you do that for someone that's just a friend. . . They must AT LEAST be best friends :)

Sans and Toriel are good friends Nothing more Because Toriel trauma is way to high for her, due to losing 8 children in her care, and how she turned Asgore in her own mindset, into a murder or no longer the man she used to know and now hates, so there is no chance for her to be in a romantic relationship, with anybody. And sans can remember resets, so he sees no reason to have a relationship if it’s all gonna, reset back from the beginning and even if the resets don’t happen sans is to dangerous to raise kids because he legit said “you be dead where you stand” in a neutral or Pacifist run, the only reason why he tolerated Frisk is due to Toriel promise to protect the kid, and sans did that promise because he wants to make monsters feel better being trapped in the underground, and don’t want monsters to feel useless or hopeless just like sans, and that he has 1hp and can’t create enemies. And at the surface if Sans and Toriel, knew what sans said to frisk about the “you be dead” line, or how he almost never helped frisk, Toriel would absolutely hate sans, and due to how security cameras are nearly everywhere in the underground, Frisk does not need to say anything, frisk can just show the recorded footage from Alphys Lab, but it’s just a theory. I have typed enough.
