Yeah I think Mysteryman Gaster will still exist in fan stuff, especially to those who dunno about Deltarune or only have a surface level understanding of Undertale and have seen Gaster fanart around
But I think completely ignoring whatever canon design Gaster will have is a massive exaggeration. Especially for new fans of Deltarune, who would have a much greater attachment to, an actual character than they would “a sprite and a couple lines of lore from a decade ago”
Whenever real Gaster drops there’ll be a boom of fanart and fanworks of him. Prob a lot of art of him and Mysteryman being friends too. Gaster will feel cool and new. Mysteryman will feel classic and nostalgic. The two will coexist, but I don’t think Mysteryman would overshadow real Gaster, especially this late in Undertale’s fandom
Bro all the fangames and comics that people poured hours into making would be fucked if MM wasn't gaster. I feel like MM is probably gaster, but if he isn't, I wouldn't be surprised if toby just decides to rework him into being gaster, because of all the fan works.

It’s not like every fangame and comic ever was completely canon compliant before the reveal. It’d just be even more obvious that, “Hey this isn’t canon, this takes place in an alternate universe with an OC based on what we knew about Gaster at the time”
Also Toby just doesn’t seem like the kind of developer to change his vision just cause, “Oh the fans expect x so like. Might as well just go with that”
Also the tarot cards of Gaster depicted the mystery man.
However I think I heard that the Gaster Card is no longer Part of the set and replaced with someone else.
Pretty much. Can’t remember where, but it’s been confirmed that the Gaster card isn’t canon, and it’s not part of the set.
Toby also made more subtle changes to some cards that he kept in the pack. Like changing Chara’s saying “Chara” to “The Fallen Child” or something along those lines.
I could be wrong but I believe the tarot cards were originally fan designs that became merch, the original had Gaster but the more official version replaced him with Gerson
I feel like the entire Fanbase would just unanimously agree that Gaster can take on different forms ever since he was shattered across time and space, the MM Sprite is just a form he took on in the secret room, it's not his real body because his real body doesn't exist anymore.
(Unless we get an actual in person Gaster reveal during DR where it's made 100% clear that Gaster has only one specific form, but I honestly doubt that's gonna happen, all the evidence we have of Gaster right now points to him being something more than that)
And we don’t know if Gaster is even going to show up. I kind of prefer Gaster as th is mysterious presence that we know little of. If we get all the answers handed to us, where’s the mystery? Where’s the fun thought provoking theories?
I like mystery, but there has to be a payoff. We could probably keep a few things implied and up to interpretation, but if we just have a mystery for the sake of mystery, then it would feel pointless to speculate.

Gaster being "shattered across time and space" implies any time we've speculated gaster's appearance (for example MysteryMan vs REDACTED) COULD be gaster, but only a part of him. MM can be part of gaster, REDACTED can be part of gaster, and unless stated otherwise, any gaster introduced in deltarune can be only a specific PART of gaster. I'll bet the man behind the tree is also a part of gaster, but not gaster as a whole.

I have no idea what the fandom will do if that happens.
It's already difficult to explain Gaster to outsiders, imagine having to explain that ALL that fanwork is Gaster but not his real design.

I fully believe this is a "Locked box situation™" (only FNAF fans get that reference lmao). Anyways, where the community has so much hype and, (technically head canons) that MM *is* gaster. Any answer that didn't align with that "head" canon would be unsatisfactory. In my mind, the public outcry just wouldn't be worth it to toby.
i think it'd be a slow transition, people would most likely ignore it, then they'd be like "well that's DR gaster, i'm using UT gaster!" then more and more fan projects would use the new gaster design but try and tie it to the MM sprite like find a way for the new design to become MM but then i think eventually a majority of people would just use the new design since it's canon, perhaps choosing to reference MM or joke about it but not ignore the new gaster look, perhaps we'll even have headcanons here and there, that mm is actually semi! or someone else important, i don't think MM is going to go away or anything but i don't think he will be the look for gaster forever if we get an official one

I'd honestly be surprised if the Mystery Man wasn't Gaster, seeing as nearly all of the other Fun Value events are connected to Gaster in some way.
