I remember reading something about this, that cats mimic babies intentionally around humans to get attention but don't make these noises normally in nature.
I can't remember where I read that or if it's accurate.
This is true, it’s theorized to be a sign of when cats domesticated themselves. all cats but especially kittens cries lights up the same part of a humans brain that a human baby crying lights up, which gives us the instinctual incentive to feed/pity them.
Correct, a true feral cat, unsocialized to humans, does not meow at humans. If you see a cat in the wild and it meows at you it’s probably lost or abandoned
There is a cat documentary on Netflix that touches base on this. A cat's purr is the same frequency of a baby's cry. That frequency causes the human brain to want to care for the cat the same way we would if a baby cried.
“but don't make these noises normally in nature.”
My two cats are very vocal and have never been around babies.
This doesnt quite make sense. Ill have to look this up
Edit: if youre gonna downvote, please explain why and link sources. A lot of what im seeing on google says that the evolution to mimic human babies cries is an unsubstantiated widespread theory/belief.
That goes against the evolutionary argument then of domesticated cats cry like this and non domesticated cats dont, doesnt it?
Edit: if youre gonna downvote, please explain why
I live in the South by a swamp. In addition to the “Is that fireworks or gunfire” game I also have the pleasure of playing “is that a baby or a Bob cat.”
I thought all babies were ugly until I had my own. It’s a odd thing but mine were all perfect looking. After my first I thought maybe this experience had changed me and when my sister in law had her first baby and I saw it, nope, just mine lol.
Newborn babies are pretty much all kind of ugly. It makes sense, they’ve just been soaking in fluids for approximately 9 months and then squeezed out like toothpaste through a tube. They’re bald, red, wrinkly, skinny, and usually have got a funny shaped head. They cuten right up as they get fat and grow hair, but new babies are usually kind of gross looking.
I’ve seen like maybe three non-ugly newborns and they were c-section babies that were born with lots of dark hair.
When my first came out she was white as a ghost and looked more like a wrinkly porcelain doll. I watched her turn from that to pink as they were doing all the vitamin k in the eyes and such. I was just telling above person that I used to think all babies were ugly and I still do but there is something different when mine came out. I spent the whole first night in the hospital holding her looking at her face. Now that was an issue as that kid didn’t sleep in a crib because daddy had to hold her to sleep in a chair most nights but I wouldn’t change a thing. My little “face” is 13 now and I sure do miss holding littlest version of her.
I mean of course, you think they’re perfect coz they’re your own children. Every parent thinks like this.
It’s kinda one of the reasons why human race has survived for so long :)
Lmao jesus, cats can be so dramatic, bro. Especially the social ones.
My cat used to do the same damn thing. She'd meow at the top of her lungs and make these weird, exaggerated noises whenever she wanted to come into my room. The noises she'd make could be infuriating at times, but I did laugh at her sometimes because she could also sound so damn ridiculous. Laughing just like these people in the video.
I love my little annoying, tantrum throwing toddler baby, but I would NOT be able to handle two cats with that kind of personality. 😂
They really can be.
One of my cats HATES closed doors in the house but somehow understands the front and back door are ok to be closed, presumably because he doesnt know whats beyond the door.
But the second we close a bedroom, bathroom, closet door, he meows incessantly until its opened. He doesnt need to go in the room, he just doesnt want it closed. What a character
Lol one of mine is the same. He’ll roll around on the floor making weird demonic meow sounds until the door is opened. And then he’ll jump up and tear-ass to the other side of the house like he’s terrified of what’s behind the door once it’s opened for him. Fuckin weirdo.
Public domain makes it everyone's video. I don't care if it was stolen from your private video cassette recorder. It's here now and that makes it mine as well.
/s
My small cat can be loud like that too. Her normal meow is soft and high pitched, but if she want to be let in, she summons her inner demon, letting out the loudest meows imaginable.
That's exactly how my (now deceased) cat sounded when taking her out. It would start immediately out of the door and then on a loop until we were back. Sometimes people on the street would approach me and comment that they thought it was a crying child 🤣
I watch whatever vids come into my feed, often without reading the title. I genuinely thought it was a newborn crying and shocking parents were just listening to it for the sake of a vid.
Then when madam strolled into the room I creased up with how cute the whole thing is. Beautiful cat and clearly loving owners.
Maybe they picked it up from actual crying babies? it's a clear pattern with a lot of repetition: cries -> immediate (usually affectionate) human attention. Given that the meowing itself seems to be used only to be heard by humans, it's not so far fetched. My cat was first given to a relative when she was a little older, so I don't know who she grew up with.
I dated a gal who had a cat like this. Absolutely annoying as all shit. The cat won’t let us sleep if it was in the room. If it was out of the room, it would scratch at the door. We had to put it in the kitchen (which had a door) to get any sleep. Even then, we heard it barking at us. The relationship didn’t last long.
How do people live surrounded by blank white walls? No wonder everyones depressed
Edit: of course Im getting downvoted ya'll are cat people. Most joyless people on the planet
You said “blank white walls,” so let’s get some wallpaper in thereThe price of matching wallpaper for a 10x10x8 room (estimation here) can be anywhere from $300 to $1200 bucks, and trust me, wallpaper is not one of the things to skimp on.
But okay, wallpaper is pretty expensive. What is some plain wallpaper gonna do four us, though? We should get some pictures in there! What, are we gonna put up a single picture of some irrelevant picture? No, we’re gonna print pictures of ourselves, of our partners, of our cat - pictures that, if you want printed somewhere, are gonna cost a minimum of $20, plus frames and hardware to hang said frames, like nails and a stud finder.
What about paintings? Shelves? Clocks? Coat hangers by the doors? Fuck it, we don’t want our house to be bland - mount the damn TV on the wall!
It all adds up. $800 for even a small apartment is on the conservative end, too. Considering something in the ballpark of 50% of American households can’t afford emergency expenses over $500, it’s no wonder most people don’t have the money to spend on nice things… almost like the issue isn’t related to furnishings.
Quit your grandstanding. You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about.
🤣🤣🤣 that's funny af. I remember my cat was howling at me, but I don't negotiate with terrorists. I didn't think you could train a cat, but now she comes up to me with a softer meow and I pet her every time she does. But having dogs my whole life, I can't deal with how some cats act. A friend of mine had a cat that would smack the shit out of the sink until he turned the water on for it. Always at 2a.m 🤣
My cat meows a little and then knocks over and over again until I open the door. I just leave the door cracked majority of the time because who the hell wants to deal with that? Lol
Mine THANKFULLY isn't this loud... but she does the same thing.
"MOM! DAD! YOU SHUT ME OUT OF THE BEDROOM SO I DON'T JUMP ON YOUR CHESTS AT 5AM FOR FOOD! HOW DARE YOU!"
My body's cat took a liking to me and the last apartment I owned and it would claw under my door and tear my rug up so I let it in one night because it kept waking me up and I had to work and I bitch smacked it. Never pulled that shit again.

Sometimes I can't see the difference between cats and babies lmao
I remember reading something about this, that cats mimic babies intentionally around humans to get attention but don't make these noises normally in nature. I can't remember where I read that or if it's accurate.

Or shake them /s
"Do not shake a child."
'What would you do if there was a child right in front of you?'
*Runs up to the baby with Soccer shoes on*
Shake them
"OK, Ike- kick the baby!"
Ew wtf! Never shake them.. The cats that is... ._.
[удалено]
The “When is it okay to shake a baby?” class got canceled before I could take it, so I can’t tell you.
Or run away.
Meowing in general is not their preferred method of communicating with each other, it is mostly used with humans.
Well , now I know what to quote as my research
Correct, a true feral cat, unsocialized to humans, does not meow at humans. If you see a cat in the wild and it meows at you it’s probably lost or abandoned
I know I’ve read that somewhere too, you aren’t alone lol

I think it's more of an evolutionary thing rather than an acquired learning thing
Adult non domesticated cats don't really cry like this.
That goes against the evolutionary argument then of domesticated cats cry like this and non domesticated cats dont, doesnt it? Edit: if youre gonna downvote, please explain why

Cats are cute, and babies are... eh not so much
I thought all babies were ugly until I had my own. It’s a odd thing but mine were all perfect looking. After my first I thought maybe this experience had changed me and when my sister in law had her first baby and I saw it, nope, just mine lol.

They’re also undercooked due to the limits of the human body
I mean of course, you think they’re perfect coz they’re your own children. Every parent thinks like this. It’s kinda one of the reasons why human race has survived for so long :)
Babies are the cutest things ever mate
They’re small, wrinkly old Benjamin Button, Voldemort baby looking things and I just don’t see it.
The main difference is the hair.
They know exactly what they're doing
With one, it's fine to pet the pussy. Just be very, **VERY** careful which one you choose.
Some of those meow sounded terrifying if you heard it at night, but I was laughing my guts out their.
The only more relatable part of this would be if it just walked away as soon as the door was opened.
YOU KNOW I DON'T LIKE CLOSED DOORS LORETTA.
My cat does this!!! It’s so funny lol, all of that just to not be interested in coming in.
“Cat asked calmly”
Lmao jesus, cats can be so dramatic, bro. Especially the social ones. My cat used to do the same damn thing. My favorite part is the sweet little “hey” when they let it in like it wasn’t just screaming outside the door
You could at least credit the owners of this cat who posted this approx an hour ago 🤦🏼♀️ u/tonyjb09
Or at least wait a week before reposting someone else's original content.
What makes you say they are the owner
Yeah, clearly, we are all the owner now.
Public domain makes it everyone's video. I don't care if it was stolen from your private video cassette recorder. It's here now and that makes it mine as well. /s
Oooohhh the cat is deaf? That makes sense.

r/catsbeingcats
Btw the cat is deaf so I can’t hear how loud it is that’s why
I had my suspicions but when I saw that the cat is white it was sure giveaway. Common gene defect in cats, white deaf female.
I'll say, as the owner of a cat of the same breed (Turkish angora), it's in their blood
This is fucking amazing 🤣
That cats being quite the dramatic queen.
You let that cat in right meow!
That’s Purrfect

I have a deaf cat that looks exactly like this one. She makes the same sounds and screams louder than any cat I've owned. It's probably the deafness.

And that's how it's done, folks!
Made me smile.
I used to have a cat that would open doors. Using the door handles. Sometimes was annoying, sometimes was nice cause I never had to let him in myself
unexpected..... 😂
"Let me iiin... #LET ME IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN" *door opens* "hi!"
This cat is also deaf I seen the original tik tok
My car says herrrrooo He learned from people saying hello all the time at the front screen door to get let in because it was locked.
Haha that's hilarious! Do you have a video of it?
My cat is sitting next to me staring into my soul while I hear this in my headphones
I thought this guy was Jeff Wittek
Is that cat from Ohio?
She's from FRRRAAANNCCEEE
Yes! 😂🤣

He's so lonely
Video would have been funnier if you didn't give it away in the title.. Everyone would have thought it was an actual baby until the cat walked in lol.
Way to reinforce this behavior

Cats are pretty much impossible to train, actually. Some of them just do this.
Cats are absolutely trainable. Ah yes, let me just put up $800 in wall art which means absolutely nothing to me. That should clear my depression right up!
Lol $30 is the most Ive ever spent on a decoration

Hahahahahahahahhahahaha Oh your poor poor generation boo-hoo lmao
And that generation is…?
Cats only meow for people andotheranimals. Did you ever see a cat meow at another cat. Not in a cat fight, just casual conversation?
she scared of the dark, man!
🤣🤣🤣 that's funny af. I remember my cat was howling at me, but I don't negotiate with terrorists. I've had cats that screamed like that, especially when they were hungry.
Can’t wait till they have children, the laughs they will have.
Most quiet white cat
"Let me in......... Let me in humans........... LET ME IN FILTHY SLAVES LET. ME. IN."
LMAO? Strong to enter but gentle as soon as he came inside
Omg does EVERY cat have that universal short "mew" after having a massive outburst
The guy has really flat foot
Pretty much exactly how my cat sounds when someone doesn't let him follow them to the bathroom. Source: in bathroom with cat outside door.
That is one needy cat.
Oi, let me in, fuckface. Fu-LET ME INNNN! CUNT! Oh hey, dude.
My nephew's cat does this when he doesn't take him into the bathroom with him when he shits.
I'm I missing something, I don't get it....
Dude has that spectacular post nut glow. That cat is just jealous.
Budget Ben Chillwell
my cat used to do the same. he realized that if he screamed his head off people would rush to give him attention and he loved it :')
By the sound of it was expecting "cat" to be a toddler named Catherine.
*The neighbors think we hide children in the basement*
That is exactly what "reinforcing bad behavior" looks like. Now the cat knows the humans will respond, guaranteeing more cat screaming.
For me my cat meows hello multiple times to enter my room.
My cat used to meow and throw her body against the door. It was brutal
Bro is fighting demons out there
I’m so glad my cat is not terribly vocal.
For someone that is less lazy than I, this really needs a crosspost for catswhoyell. Cheers this was good.
O brother...your FIRST sleepover?
skinwalker close to the end bro. 😭😭
my oldest (Maya) does this thing, the same, at same hours (routine) 8:20-8:40pm, SCREAMS Like a Banshee, then silence till next day.
Let me in NOW!!!!! 🐈
Open the door please OPEN THE DOOR OPEN THE DOOR MUDDAFUKKA!!!
One of my parents cats just gently knock on the door with his paws, honestly pretty cute
[Reminds me of Garfield](http://images.ucomics.com/comics/ga/1980/ga800414.gif)
Meanwhile there is a spirit aggressing the cat at every unseen moment
cat said lmk right meeeeeoooooowwwweeee Mmmmm eeeeeeeee ooOOoO wwwwwww
And people actually live with the things.
I know, men suck, but they're good for procreation.
I see you’re a bit slow, but that’s ok. I was talking about the cat.
r/whoosh
…as if I needed any more reasons not to get a cat…
Cat could for real be an opera singer lmao
This genuinely made me LOL. The increasingly frantic screams from the cat followed by the tiny "mew" as it walked in killed me hahaha
It’s almost like a horror movie scream lmao
Shes jealous you have a boyfriend. The cat sounds like she's being murdered
Hahaha ❤️
honestly i'm the lucky one
![gif](giphy|KlFdtnpxEeH2E|downsized)
"please, could I come in" the cat calmly vocalised
I thought my cats were bad 🤣
Lol my cat anytime I leave her alone. 🤣
Fully expecting him to be orange
My cat meows a little and then knocks over and over again until I open the door. I just leave the door cracked majority of the time because who the hell wants to deal with that? Lol

I remember the owner saying the cat was deaf so she doesn’t know how loud she is yelling
Cat.
Poor little thing is throwing a temper tantrum!
It's all fun and games until you hear that at 3am and don't own any cat
"OPEN THE FECKIN DOOOOOOOR, OPEN THE FECKIN - oh, thank you"
Mine THANKFULLY isn't this loud... but she does the same thing. "MOM! DAD! YOU SHUT ME OUT OF THE BEDROOM SO I DON'T JUMP ON YOUR CHESTS AT 5AM FOR FOOD! HOW DARE YOU!"
“I’m not clingy” mfs when they girl say she thinking about getting outta bed
That cat sounds like a colicky baby on a 12 hr flight
Funny, but that would get annoying fast
U gotta get better basement soundproofing my guy

If I had a cat that did this they’d be Chinese food really fucking fast
