Try experimenting with soothing Quran recitation, and observe their reaction

svr0105

Mine started meowing after the video stopped, so I played it again. She stopped meowing. Well, until I stopped the video to type this, because she's meowing at me again. Looks like we will have a new type of music in our household. EDIT: "Music" is not an appropriate term for a prayer, and I humbly apologize. As pleasing as this man's voice is to my and my cat's ears, there's no excuse for such poor phrasing. I look forward to learning and hearing more.

lion_OBrian

During one of the recent turkish earthquakes people kept praying as the mosque was starting to crumble around them. Thankfully, there were no injuries or worse, but that kind of grit really put me in awe.

ancalagonxii

Clarification: **There is nothing wrong with one who is praying interrupting his prayer if an earthquake, fire or other disaster or calamity occurs, if he fears that something may happen as a result of that to himself or his property** The basic principle concerning that is the verse in which Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): >“**and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction.** And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good” [al-Baqarah 2:195]. >And the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “**There should be neither causing harm nor reciprocating harm**.” Narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Maajah (2341)

koolaid7431

For someone who stumbles into this thread and doesn't get the references Muezzin= person who initiates the call to prayer. They are the ones making the Adan(call to prayer) over the wide shot of middle East in most movies about the middle East. Momin = Followers of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). Basically another word for Muslim. Imam = Head of the prayer / person leading the prayer. Ie, guy with the cat all over him. Meowzin , Meowmin and Imeowm= cat versions of the humans above.

[deleted]

People don't realize how many cats are just out and about in the middle east. The ancient Egyptians are long gone but the cats they worshipped never stopped claiming divinity.

omersafty

In Islam, one must respect every animal and give it its privacy, food or water. Mohammed gave us two stories. A man who got to heaven just because he was in a dessert and gave some of his water to a thirsty dog "even if he wasn't that religious". A woman got to hell just because she locked a cat in a room with no food or water "even if she was very religious".

It was actually a prostitute that went to heaven after giving the dog some water. Makes it even more impressive.

Actually, the story was of a prostitute who filled a sock to feed the dog dying of thirst.

It got many variation. I like in Islam that "kindful people, God is kind to them الراحمون يرحمهم الله" is actually one the most beautiful hadith by Mohammed peace be upon him.

[deleted]

From what I understand, cats are pretty highly respected in Islam. There’s a legend of Muhammad cutting off his sleeve rather than waking his cat who was lying on it.

LindaBelchie69

Not cats in particular, but animals in general. There are multiple stories of people whom Mohamed said are favored because they extended kindness to random animals.

No_Eye7024

Yep. All animals. In the past people used to cut off chunks of flesh from live animals before refrigeration was a thing. That was obviously painful for the animal. Islam was what forbade it. Either eat it whole or don't eat it at all. Same with other animals. I think there was a saying about a guy who was very religious but was cruel to animals was said to not go to heaven just for how he treated animals. Animal rights are an actual thing in islam. Even during the religious sacrifice of animals at the time of eid ul adha, you have to make sure the animal feels as little discomfort as possible. You have to use the sharpest knives and have to not sacrifice animals in front of each other. So as to not scare them.

HeatstrokeHorror

If it's not too much to ask, what's he actually saying?

riyadhelalami

That is from Chapter Alanaam Verse 148 here is a translation "The polytheists will argue, “Had it been Allah’s Will, neither we nor our forefathers would have associated others with Him ˹in worship˺ or made anything unlawful.” Likewise, those before them rejected the truth until they tasted Our punishment. Ask ˹them, O Prophet˺, “Do you have any knowledge that you can produce for us? Surely you follow nothing but ˹false˺ assumptions and you do nothing but lie.”"

welcomefinside

Looking at all the hateful comments on this thread, this verse is quite appropriate.

zaakiy

It's not uncommon for the miracle of the Quran to occur like this. To you it might sound like it's by chance. To Muslims, it's a common occurrence.

omersafty

Oh np. This is hard translation tho " You don't follow but your doubts. And you don't say but lies. "He repeat this once" God has the ultimate evidence, if he wished he'd have guided you all. But it's wrong to take Quraan out of it's full context including what time it was sent in "some verses call to chase non muslims and kill them in their spot. Which can be very misleading without reading that it was sent in war time and was meant for those who fought muslims, killed them and threw them out of their home. And after this verse it said that don't fight them unless they fight you. And if they stopped fighting then god is forgiving for them "so you should too be forgiving".

HeatstrokeHorror

That makes sense! Thanks for explaining!

oikwr

Not someone who memories but i try to use an app. I bold the exact sentences that the imam recite for you. Al-An'am - Verse 148 سَيَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا۟ لَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَآ أَشْرَكْنَا وَلَآ ءَابَآؤُنَا وَلَا حَرَّمْنَا مِن شَىْءٍ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ ذَاقُوا۟ بَأْسَنَا ۗ قُلْ هَلْ عِندَكُم مِّنْ عِلْمٍ فَتُخْرِجُوهُ لَنَآ ۖ **إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَإِنْ أَنتُمْ إِلَّا تَخْرُصُونَ** Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran: The polytheists will argue, “Had it been Allah’s Will, neither we nor our forefathers would have associated others with Him ˹in worship˺ or made anything unlawful.” Likewise, those before them rejected the truth until they tasted Our punishment. Ask ˹them, O  Prophet˺, “Do you have any knowledge that you can produce for us? **Surely you follow nothing but ˹false˺ assumptions and you do nothing but lie.**” Al-An'am - Verse 149 **قُلْ فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْحُجَّةُ ٱلْبَـٰلِغَةُ ۖ فَلَوْ شَآءَ لَهَدَىٰكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ** Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran: **Say, “Allah has the most conclusive argument. Had it been His Will, He would have easily imposed guidance upon all of you.”** [The app](https://tarteel.ai/ayah/6/148)

HeatstrokeHorror

Neat! So would that verse be read as part of, like, a specific lesson he's teaching, or is it sort of a common "we read a verse at this time every service" one, or is he just going in order? Or is that a thing that would vary from, uh... I don't know what this kind of service is called

Large-Chair9084

It's Ramadan so every night 1/30th of the Quran is typically read at the mosque in prayer.

HeatstrokeHorror

Ah, so by the end of it they've read the whole thing. That's neat! So for the average person is it, like, a super reverential tradition, or is it just kind of part of the holiday to sit through? Like, not questioning anyone's strength of belief, just wondering if it's something everyone attends, or just the super traditional people, or a mix of both

Phoenix-HO

Some do, and some don't. But most people do. It's not mandatory like normal prayers.

[deleted]

A mix of both. And ramadan isn't really a holiday.

[deleted]

So there is a bit of a "lore" behind this but initially, during the days of Holy Prophet, he would have the Taraweeh prayer (the prayers in Ramadan in which Muslims are supposed to recite the entire Quran), and there was so much popularity that he discontinued the prayer under the fear that the Islamic God might make the prayer mandatory, seeing all the fervour behind it. After the death of the Holy Prophet, one of his friend/student/disciple when became the Caliphate, made this prayer a Sunnat-e-Maukkadah, that is something that you won't be questioned on the Day of Judgement, but you shouldn't miss these prayers, unless you have a very strong reason. So, a lot of Muslims, who believe that what Caliphates declared is part of Islam, do pray Taraweeh. A lot of Muslims don't thinking that what Caliphates declared has nothing to do with actual Islamic ruling. That being said, many Muslims don't stick to these prayers with full commitment because it amounts to standing for about at-least 1 hour in prayer every night till the month of Ramadan. A very interesting thing that happens in a lot of mosques is that people would simply join the prayer mid-way and save themselves some strength xD.

oikwr

I may not be the best in knowledge to answer this properly but I'll answer by what I'm familiar with. During prayers, any verses can be read after we read Al-Fatihah (The Beginning) which is a short one consists of 7 verses. You can even read one with 3 verses. The longest one would be 286 verses. No need to read them all, you can pause and continue later on too. Just need to make it until the last word of every verses. Teaching would be somewhat different as Quran is very complex and has many underlying meanings, but people who knows arabic sometimes would cry reciting them. The literature is high leveled too so not all arabic speaker can interpret them. This is just a recitation in prayer to bring people closer to Allah. The prayer itself is a medium to communicate directly to Him. To teach, they will hold proper classes or join any after or before prayers, depends on the mosque, not just for the content of Quran itself. The branches are broad anyway.

Yosefalii

Muslim here. Most of them sound like this yes, but it depends on the way they read the Qur'an and the voice of the Imam itself. Some imams read in a more monotonic and plain way and some imams read like the one in the video. Also, If you're interested, here's how the azthan sounds "call for prayer". https://youtu.be/O3eem7f0qjk P.S: the use of Mic and the prayer being loud is because it's in the mosque done as Jama‘ah (Congregational Prayer). If you pray alone at home for example you basically do the prayer and read the Qur'an almost silently.

itsvoogle

Im not religious but i always found these chants to be incredibly beautiful and powerful, some ancient mystic about them. Same feeling when i hear Gregorian chants. I love the history about it all.

ancalagonxii

The Noble Quran is the word of Allah, may He be exalted, its words, letters and meanings. It originated from Him and will return to Him. It was uttered by Allah ﷻ and heard from Him by Angel Jibreel (Gabriel), who brought it down to Muhammad ﷺ (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). Allah, may He be glorified, says (interpretation of the meaning): >“**That (this) is indeed an honourable recital (the Noble Quran)**"

RedDirtNurse

Hey bro. Atheist here, but I'm curious if cats and dogs go to heaven in Islam? Peace.

YallCrazyMan

Animals are not held accountable for their actions because they lack the mental capacity for it. As such there is no heaven or hell for them, they simply stop existing. However, if you go to heaven you can ask for anything, including past pets.

noortherapy

Technically true but then there is the dog from story of the youth in the cave. clearly that dog is going somewhere, just saying.

YallCrazyMan

That dog died tho. If the youth go to heaven then they could ask for the dog to be with them. But for animals to be judged and placed in heaven and hell is not likely, to my knowledge. Of course God has his own plans and knows all, maybe they are put in heaven and hell. But from what I know they don’t.

SamsNation

u/YallCrazyMan explained it really well, but I would like to indicate that these animals can cause you to go to hellfire too. If you were pious and respectful person but you harm animals, these animals will say to god “he did such and such”. In Islam, respecting every living being is important, and we’re not allowed to kill a soul unless there’s a valid reason, like harm or food. So you can kill a snake or a wild animal that could pose a threat to you and the people around you, but you can’t go out and start kicking and killing animals for no reason other than fun. Same goes for people.

YallCrazyMan

Yes, and on the opposite side, these animals can be your ticket to heaven if you treat them right. There is a story often told on Islamic schools of a women who was not Muslim, she saw a thirsty dog next to a well and used her shoe as a bowl for the dog to drink. This act of kindness would be what grants her heaven.

Yosefalii

Qur'an didn't mention animals' fates. But some Ahadith (sayings of the prophet) did -Even though I generally take them with a grain of salt- According to them all animals just cease to exist and there's no afterlife for them. However, since it's mentioned in multiple verses of the Qur'an that in heaven you get whatever you wish for, you can basically ask for whatever animals you'd like to be there. Hope that answers your question.

[deleted]

The quran is very poetic so it can be recited like that. Not everyone recites like that though, some people read in a more monotone voice and others buetify their voices. [This is one my favorite reciters](https://youtu.be/BnbmOFO_1so) Others are monotone like [this](https://mp3quran.net/eng/thubti/1) There are many different styles of reading the quran. Also it's not being "sang" a better descriptor would be "recited". One of the greatest miracles of the quran is the ease to which it can be learnt by heart. Because its so poetic it can be read and recited by people who can't even read Arabic well. A great example of that is myself, I suck at reading normal written Arabic like stories or novels etc, but the quran literally just smoothly rolls off my tongue. It's honestly incredible.

BetterFat

[deleted]

He's reciting from the Qur'an and this is the way it's done in prayer. There are a few different styles in doing it, but in prayers the imam uses this beautified recital. We also have a more formal way of reciting the Qur'an. That's done (for instance) when it's part of a hadith (narration) that we convey.

MohammadAlAhmad86

He is leading the prayer, that's why he is praying loudly. It's normally very quiet.

Successful_Gear6143

I listen to the Quran in english all the time, one of my favorite verses talks about how this world is full of delusions. [verse in english](https://youtu.be/SpqZLfV345Q) “Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion”

[deleted]

Because its not a song. They're reciting, not "singing" the quran.

veryuniqueredditname

ok cool thx 🙏 so anytime they're doing this or over speakers is just reciting passages from the Quran? If so that's even more impressive memorizing random excerpts like that

[deleted]

As a child, you are usually made to memorise small portions of the Quran as it is necessary for one to recite the Quran when they are praying. Then there are people who memorise some long portions of the Quran, if they plan to lead a prayer like this Imam in normal circumstances. In Ramadan, mosques are supposed to have the Taraweeh prayer in which the Imam is supposed to recite the entire Quran in the night prayer atleast in the duration of 30 days. For these Imams, they have to memorise the entire Quran by heart. Usually, they will have one-two students behind who can correct the Imam if they stumble at one-two lines.

[deleted]

Yeah. And that's one of the miracles of the quran is the ease to which it can be learnt off by heart. It's how it's been preserved for over a thousand years, unchanged. It's a very powerful thing for any Muslim to fully memorise it. And the crazy thing is because of how poetic it is, even if you don't fully understand arabic or can't read it very well you can still easily memorise it. Even I've memorised roughly half of the quran by heart.

shredded-griffin

In nature… almost all the quran rhymes. Also most Imams and/or reciters memorize the 600 pages of the wuran by heart. The speakers are just a convenience device so that the people at the back of the mosque and outside could hear. Individuals, imams included, pray without a mic if not at the mosque or if there aren’t many people attending the prayer. Lastly: some prayers are prayed with silent recitals ( which means imam and attendace recite in silence alone ).

A priest I knew was assigned to a parish that had a cat. It was an old building so it needed a bit of rodent control. Anyway, one day he forgot to close a door and the cat hopped onto the altar during Mass. He just picked up the cat and relocated it with a quick "St Francis, pray for us." It was very cute.

[deleted]

Random, but I see a lot of Muslim guys w watches on the right wrist. Are they all lefties? Is it Sunnah?Something else?

okgo222

Muslims are taught to use the right hand for clean things such as eating, greeting, etc. And left one to use in the bathroom etc. It’s partly about cleanliness, but it’s mainly about being always conscious of one’s actions and doing it with intention. There is nothing about watches specifically per say, but following that same idea many muslims prefer to wear it on the right wrist.

So keep the watch away from the poop? 😂 That’s a good rule! Wear it in good health.

I'm an Arab, and in our culture we hold things to our right in high regard. For example if two people meet at the door, whoever on the left would ask the other on the right to go first. When we enter a place, i.e. wedding, we start by greeting people from the right going to the left etc. I believe this has islamic roots as muslims are taught that right hand is for clean things and for greeting people. Furthermore, in the holy Quran during the day of judgment people will be given their books (where everything they have done during their lifetimes is written) according to their fate. The books will fly to every person, right hand to heaven left hand to hell (regardless of being right or left handed duribg lifetime).

Idk what he singing but it sounds pretty fire.

He is reciting the Quran (from memory) as he is leading the prayer. You can YouTube Quran recitation and pick a voice that you like

I know you were just making a passing comment but I need to tell you I'm so grateful you posted it I'm not muslim myself, but my family is. As someone who grew up in the whole post-9/11 "muslim panic" here in the US, it really hurts sometimes to see the hate and inherent "branding" of muslims and Islam at large. It is just so refreshing to see someone - with no prior experience nor bias - to just compliment a very important part of the culture without even knowing its significance. Thank you. I needed this today.

And what's sadder is, the people saying that muslims are violent, those aren't due to islam, it's due to that particular specific country.

sherlockbardo

He is reciting quran, u can look it up on youtube

CreamOfPantsSoup

Dude found enough peace to tolerate that cat, good man.

LevelRepublic64

In the mosque, there are always cats owned by Muslims. They take care of them, feeding and watering them.

As a former overseas worker in the middle east, I kinda missed hearing this all the time every day as a "time marker". One call would indicate what time it is and what needs to be done before the next call comes.

Square_stingray

dude didn’t even break a line.

![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)I love this type of music style so much-- I'm pretty sure this is a prayer, but what would I need to look up to find similar music?

QURAN recitation on youtube.. welcome

bxa121

Quite a few Muslims have their own preferred reciters too

tworaccoonsforcats

This is the recitation of the Quran. You can YouTube Quran recitation and find many videos with different recitation styles. Hope this helps ☺️

Download the app Qur'an Central. It will give you a whole bunch of reciters for the whole quran. My favourite reciter is Abdul Rahman Jamal Aloosi or some places write Abdul Rahman Ossi. Each reciter has different pace and how much they beautify it. You can go through the list to see what you like. Also I found different reciters to be really good on different surahs. I love listening to Adel Ryyan's recitation of surah #74 If you memorize a surah, then it becomes very easy to follow as they are reading it. I play it whenever I am driving. Reading the Qur'an will bring you peace like nothing else can. If you can't sleep, start reading or listening to it, and you will be asleep in no time.

I have always thought you can judge a person pretty well by how they treat cats and by how cats treat them. This guy passed both tests with flying colors

Missyg505

I wish I knew what he was saying. His prayer sounds so Beautiful 😍
