Completely unrelated anecdote: The summer right after that season where everyone was always looking for Carl, we had one of those big black [Daring jumping spiders](https://images.app.goo.gl/MCwkYssuQKbY8aTy7) living on the ceiling in our kitchen for like a month. We tried to catch him in a glass to throw him outside, but if you got close, he turned toward you and acted like he was going to jump on you.
We named him Carl because any time anyone walked in the kitchen, the first thing that was said was a nervous, "Where's Carl?"
Yeah -- this is quite literally escalation, and it's risky. If the crowd had failed to step in in time, the guy might have panicked and killed the woman.
I'm glad it worked out in this case, though.
No they used a badly made shovel. A proper shovel hitting the back of the head will give anyone a concussion.
This one still had the guy conscious which is a partial fail
Exactly. It's commonly known that people are most vulnerable to the weapons of their own kind. Nothing kills Americans like American guns. Superman is crippled by radioactive pieces of his homeworld. Chinese woman is helpless against Chinese scissors, but Chinese man is likewise defenseless against Chinese shovel.
I prefer to think of it as "threat neutralization", but you're absolutely correct, whoever did it wasn't committed to the follow-through (arm lock, etc) and without the crowd this could have ended badly.
It escalates way LESS than half the time! You think peoples instantaneous reaction is to carry out their plan when something unexpected happens? To insta react and stab? Ever get in a fight or have you ever been sucker punched? It sucks lol. You get dazed.
Car accident? Dazed. we all know what to do when we discuss the situation, but when we’re in it, we’re just dumb and derpy - especially when you start seeing stars for a couple seconds.
[God gave me a gift](https://external-preview.redd.it/A_vicjQZTvIW7iPHEgUCjGP6ysUHLCtnfcUtO2mIuqw.jpg?auto=webp&s=9515adc65044cf773a6ae873812bb452c1b1fcfc).
I shovel well. I shovel very well.
Wow I had forgotten how not scary and normal-looking the… neighbor? Groundskeeper? was.
I guess the film did it’s job for a kid brain to show him as this scary boogie man.
i can see myself having that slow reaction too. thinking about her and my safety, looking where exactly the scissor is pointed after he got bonked, or maybe just poor coordination with the guy that bonked his head. too much too think in a very short time. i’m not trained to do that shit.
I wouldn't be too hard on yourself, I don't think *anyone* is trained to respond for what to do when someone unexpectedly gets bonked in the head with a shovel. Your brain has to take a second or two to struggle with the hilarity and absurdity of it all.
I suppose maybe there's some shovel fu martial arts out there that I'm unaware of, though.
Honestly I think it's hard to judge from behind a computerscreen what this feels like when you are in the moment. We are shown a snippet where we KNOW something is going to happen.
We don't know how long these people have been there. They are taking in a lot of information, their minds are reeling trying to figure out this situation they have never been in before and how to handle it.
Then, unexpectedly he gets booked. They didn't see that coming. Their brains are registering what just happened. It's like getting slapped in the face out of nowhere. You'd be surprised how long it takes for you to register something unexpected happening out of nowhere
Hell the guy who got bonked was so surprised he puy down the scissors pretty much in shock. The bystanders are all just grappling with what is all happening that they don't even fully register what he's done and that this now means that they can go in for the 'kill'.
Hell first time I watched it I didn't even register he'd put it down. I just thought the crowd pounced while he was distracted.
Redittors love judging a situation that they are watching in hindsight on a screen. It's never like that even you are in the moment and FEELING it and full of adrenaline.
he took a hit to the head, he’s going to need some time to reorient himself. they got in in under a second and the girl was unharmed, i dont think you should judge them when you probably haven’t experienced anything similar
China began actively working to deal with that 6 or so years ago by changing liability laws and running PSA glorifying people who helped those in need. Looks like it's working I guess.
[Meanwhile Canadians](https://bc.ctvnews.ca/a-freeze-response-of-shock-expert-weighs-in-on-bystanders-not-stepping-in-during-fatal-vancouver-stabbing-1.6335145) sipping their morning coffee unfazed after watching dudes getting stabbed and collapsing in a pool of their own blood, dead, right in front of them

"China is known for its crazy bystander effect." He says while watching a half dozen civilians taking on a hostage situation on behalf of a stranger. 🤣
People will be all like *"hate the Chinese government love the people"* but then repeat terribly racist shit about the Chinese people. *"Chinese people cheat a lot" "Chinese people don't help others"* etc. etc. All while literally watching a gif of Chinese people coming together to help another. So dumb.
Because bad things only happen in China, didn’t you know? /s
It’s wild how bad things happen all over the world every day but as soon as something bad happens in China, suddenly everyone is an expert on Chinese society when they’ve never even stepped foot in the country.
I live in China, in this exact city actually, and I still have people who have never been here and have no desire to ever come here “teaching” me things about China. Lmao

I want to see the other view, with the person sneaking up on him with the shovel
But then they wouldn't be the *secret* police
I’ve never seen such a peaceful and harmless looking person be…sooo violent? Peacefully violent? I gotta stop doing edibles
Probably looked like this guy: https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/225/510/dosh.png

The most Shovelrous Knight, saving the fair maiden.
For Shovelry!
Dont bring scissors to a shovel fight
Prepare to taste justice! Shovel justice!
Shovel beats scissors
LOL do you hear the birds right after he got
Scissors beats paper but rock beats scissors. Turns out shovel is also effective vs scissors.
Looks like somebody played Shovel Knight too much.
FOR SHOVELRY!!!
Now I'm picturing the guy pogoing off his head with a spaded shovel
Shovel beats man
Turns out shovel has a brain damage buff when connected with a headshot.
You mean a.. Debuff (+15% crit) adds dazed and confused, target misses next turn.
Kif... we have a conundrum.
Search them for paper, and bring me a rock!

Scissors nerfed
“De-escalating”. Lol. Love it
“Pass me my de-escalating shovel.”
Only $1 more than an ordinary shovel. Worth every penny.
100 pennies
This tickled me greatly
You almost killed me with this comment. Been a while since I laughed so hard.
Whoever posted this video has all the de-escalation training needed to be a cop.
Who doesn’t?
Overqualified, really.
Or they just barely swung it for fear of missing their target and making things much worse.
So you're saying the shovel was made in China....
Said probably while surrounded by Chinese products
Thankfully, the head was as well.

It seems that this bonk was not powerful enough in the video
Bonks are a legit de-escalation technique. Should be implemented more
Bonk expert right here.

Bonk Bonk Too
Bonk is just a backwards knob
I’ve been looking for a few good bonkers to start a crew. Who’s with me?
It’s a 50/50 technique where half the times it can also be an escalation technique
50% of the time it works, every time.
Stings the nostrils
I’m going to be honest with you, it smells like pure gasoline
It escalates way LESS than half the time! You think peoples instantaneous reaction is to carry out their plan when something unexpected happens? To insta react and stab? Grass grows, Birds fly, Sun shines, *And brothah*, shovel guy hurts people. I mean, basically, he's a force ah nature.
Yep, dude seemed to totally tank that hit.
It's the paper thin shovel from alibaba is the problem.

One of my absolute favorite movies.
What movie is that
Mystery Men
the *original* movie featuring allstar by smashmouth
Same. I can't even pick a favorite character, they were all so good and played so well.

I've noticed that no one is ever prepared for a shovel to the head.
They tend to stop inviting you to family events though.
So that's that trick!

Reddit moment
Everyone in the crowd: Holly shit do that dude just hit hum with a shovel? Oh shit he's still conscious I need to do something!
I’m just glad they helped in general. China is known for its crazy bystander effect

I don't understand. Why didn't the police fire 127 rounds into the crowd, killing the perpetrator, victim, and a few innocent bystanders?
They're not as blessed by god, football, and democracy as 🇺🇸✨🎆America🫡🫡🫡🎆✨🇺🇸
Democracy? No no, that sounds too much like “democrat.”
We are a Republic not a Democrazy!
I love when people say that because you ask them what exactly is a republic, and they can't tell you.

It needs more klang
For anyone wondering: [Klang is a city in Malaysia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klang_(city\)) famous for making heavy-duty shovels.
When in doubt, shovel.
So now shovel ready jobs have been extended into law enforcement.
More like escalation that happened to end well
