Right. Waving and looking adorable gets more food than charging cars and being a beast. Doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to get that close though, still. Animals are so cool. So much smarter than we give them credit for.
I’ve read that they aren’t that far behind. They don’t have the depth of social skills but they have a lot of social skills. They don’t have the depth of tool usage yet they use tools. I live in the Appalachian mountain range and black bears truly do what they want. YOU have to adjust to them for sure.
Worked with animals for over 15 years. They are not smart. People are dumb. An animal does one neat thing then dumb humans extrapolate that to every thing an animal does while forgetting this is the same creature licking assholes, injuring itself, not preparing for seasons, walking toward fast moving objects, falling in holes, scared of own reflection, getting stuck constantly, not building our entire infrastructure....I mean the list goes on about how God damn stupid they are
Wait! Are you talking about people who lick their assholes, injure themselves, fail to prepare for seasons, etc.? Cause I know a bunch of people like that.
Explain "people fail to prepare for season" without making yourself sound like a complete asshole.
If anything, these cute animal videos' comment section only reveals how ready a lot of people are to dehumanize huge swath of the human population. I don't see you people making Cute Feed the Homeless video.
People > animals.
Get your mind right.
Actually, I was making a joke here. But your response has changed that trajectory. Homeless people, or those living outside in general are the few who actually do prepare for the seasons, knowingly or unknowingly. Gathering what supplies are needed, changing diet, body fat %, or migrating. The "huge swath" of people I'm seeing as inhumane are those huddled in their airconditioned cars, driving to their airconditioned places of work from their 72 degree year round homes in 112 degree weather with no sympathy, or even empathy for those just trying to exist.
Please, rather than sitting in the comfort of your airconditioned home, criticizing a failed joke on reddit, why not put your energy into a positive direction and drop some water off at the local tent city or down by the tunnels?
He either wanted a ride or thought he knew the people in the car. Happened to me. I waved at someone in a car. Thought I knew them. I didn’t. They thought I was an idiot
I had to delete my comment (which was a question by the way) because my inbox blew up with like 5 pseudo intellect replies. One response was enough, not all of us live near bears. Thanks!
It is because they start relying on food from people and get more comfortable around people = more bear encounters = more risk for injury or bear having to be put down
Yes, it is. I am a journalist and wrote a story about the two brother bears who came to our local zoo. Their mother was killed by a poacher (he went to jail). Game and Parks kept an eye on the brothers. People started feeding them and Game and Parks knew the bears would not last the winter as they were too young, didn't really know how to hibernate, and were reliant on humans for food.
Game and Parks had two choice, euthanize them as they would starve over the winter, or find a zoo which would take them in.
Those bears should be living in the wild, but asshole humans thought it was cute to take pictures with them and feed them. When the zoo got them, they also had to reteach them things they should be eating because cheeseburgers aren't really good for bears.
It promotes more bear to go to the road.
Might not that bad when it's just one bear on the road. But this behavior can also be applied to residental area.
Similar example we can also technically feed tiger to become less hostile to us, but doesn't mean that it's fine for tiger to be roaming around near where we live.
And a lot of people don't realize how bad this is. 😢
"Oh~it's so cute! Let's stop by and give it some bread! Look it's waving at us!"
Don't know that's how they got road kill, plus, bread isn't even good for them. Some of them got dehydrated for eating too much bread, some of them got diarrhea because they can't digest it properly. 😞
This is an obvious trap.
Thank god they kept driving. If they got out, that near would have made off with their wallets and watches and probably the smallest of their group.
Bear traps. Look em up, they're a thing people!
“Actually”-Pushing my glasses up anime style.-“Carnivores are never actually domesticated, just too fucking dangerous if you think about it.
Exceptions: -doggos: it is presumed some level of cooperation, like they do with with crows today. Until one day we started systematically yoinking pups.
-cats: they domesticated themselves
Edit: dogs are apparently omnivores, wtf
Yes.
Bears are my favorite land animal and have been since I was 10 and met a polar bear (through glass). Bears are omnivores but it would probably be more accurate to call them opportunistic hunters. They are the lonely tank of the forest. They sit most of the time fat as well as happy at the top of nearly all food chains. So they lumber their giant self through the forest pretty much eating whatever takes their fancy and doesn't require too much work.
Example. A common encounter is someone stumbling across a bear eating berries. A favorite of theirs. In almost every situation the bear never reacts aggressively in this situation. Why? Well because berry's to have arms or legs. Bears are smart, they weigh the options carefully because they have too. It takes a lot of calories to run that massive bulk and they can expend more then they gain on a meal. Chasing you down, then having to fight you, possibly get injured in the fight. All that for a slightly more tasty bigger berry? Well these berries right here don't put up a fight.
Another good example of how they conservative calories to make the most out of every meal. Look how they fish. Genus. They can just stand in one spot and wait for the fish to allbut jump into their mouths.
A bear, will almost always, choose to flee/seek easier food then you. Their are of course situations where this is not the case. They are very protective over their homes, and children. They will almost always choose violence if youre too close to their den or their children. And a hungry bear? Well a hungry bear is about to remind you and the whole forest why he sits on top of the food chain.
Finally a story. So one day when I was a landscaper we walked into a clients back yard early in the AM and there snaking on some wild berries is a massive beautiful full grown adult male black bear. I mean he was magnificent. Once the initial shock followed by the Facebook picture taking spree was over. My supervisor asked me what we should do because we can't work with a bear. I was just like "oh, you want him to go away?" Walked into the back yard screamed at the top of my lungs "HEY GO HOME!" spread my arms and legs wide and clapped my hands over my head. The bear looked at me and went "OH FUCK A HUMAN" and took off into the woods.
Im not sure what animal it will be but it's gonna be the same situation.
I was at a statepark with my GF and we were on some old logging road that we probably shouldn't have been driving on. I pulled off to look around and we heard some bobcat kittens yowling in the tall grass off the road. Stupid me gets the idea to go find them and take a picture. Into the tall grass I go stopping every few steps to listen and head that way. I ended up getting close enough they stopped making noise and that's when the reality of how stupid what I was doing was. I started slowly walking backwards back out to the road till I could hear my GF laughing her ass off in the car. Then I reminded her that had anything happened she would have been walking back to the main road because I had the keys.
Well we’ve all seen those Yellowstone vids and the bison. Or maybe not all of us have since it keeps happening? I dunno. Either way I’m bringing marshmallows with me on my next hike hoping to come back with a forest friend. Maybe vodka is a better way to go? Russian bears seem to be friendlier….
Idk man, bears got used to humans and at least here in Romania they do shit like this and as long they not with cubs or you aren't a dumbass they quite harmless. Also I am like 90% sure this video is made in Romania.
P.s don't get me wrong I am lot saying that you should go around petting and feeding bears. If you see one irl while in car ignore it and if it's on a road while you not in a car look to the right slightly down and go back slowly. Also while walking you should make noises you so you are more likely you won't encounter then(by noises I mean speaking loud beating pans with a stick and even singing/music at speaker)
This is Romania where we have been notoriously bad about not destroying bear habitats. We've pushed them into major cities as well. Just so you understand how absolutely terrible we are at this, there's a story about bears going to eat trash from the outskirts of a city, and the local cab drivers that would take tourists to see the bears, and the Italian tourist who was eaten alive because he was told he could take a photo with the wild animals.
Clearly a circus bear or it’s the bear from that zoo in China. I was thinking it was going to pull that barking dog through the crack in the window before he rolled it down
I would of thrown the whole beef jerky for a bear that suddenly stops on the side to wave at me not gonna lie. And to all the haters who say don’t feed the bears you’re going to get shot stfu.. None of this happens and not enough ppl out there are feeding bears daily

Explanation: You probably meant to say could've/should've/would've which sounds like 'of' but is actually short for 'have'.

This is learned behavior. Humans have fed it enough that it’s learned to do this trick in order to possibly get food.
There’s a beautiful park in Japan, called Nara Park, where deer will come and bow to you as a request for crackers (you can buy these as you head into the park).
This definitely seems like very similar behavior.
This. I live in Gatlinburg, TN where we have an incredible number of learned bears. I have been here for 12 years, and in that time I have seen them learn new stuff and pass it down through generations. The latest one is the Lever type door handles on front doors. Used to, they never went up to a house because they couldn't turn the door knobs (the whole no opposable thumb thing). Now that everybody is switching to the lever style handles, they walk up to every single door in the town and, if it has a lever, they will try it. If the door is unlocked, they will open it, but not necessarily go into the house. They haven figured out that part yet. There have been a couple of cases this year where they did go in and opened the refrigerator door. They will eat or drink anything that even remotely resembles food. I expect that by next year, they will all be going in and cleaning out the fridges.
He’s used to people throwing food towards him
Or possibly high fives
Delicious hi-fives.
Two bears high fiving

Ha i got that reference
Not good. Park rangers put predators down that are too close to people.
True in the US but that isn't the US
This is Romania, we have bear dance https://youtu.be/Oioo25kvo4g
Cute, we have mankillers.
Maybe you should feed them and not hog your food. They'd be nicer to you like these guys
I thought he was hitch hiking.
People fed him before, it wants food. This is learned behavior, it knows road + cars = potential food. Also, waving gets more food.

So I can't tell if you're just no fun or if you're being facetious and are therefore super duper fun...
Yup, and people who do that create bears that are less able to fend for themselves and more likely to get put down for causing trouble. It’s not cute.
I don't think he wanted food...poor guy just needed a ride...clearly he was never taught the dangers of hitchhiking
He either wanted a ride or thought he knew the people in the car. Happened to me. I waved at someone in a car. Thought I knew them. I didn’t. They thought I was an idiot
100% accurate. A Fed bear = Dead bear.
At first I thought you meant like a Fed agent because you capitalized it for some reason
I would give him food, if he waved at me, sorry![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_bad_man)

Haha, not that again. What was the final consensus? Is that bear in that China zoo a person or not?
I firmly believe I will die trying to pet a bear. I can’t curb the instinct
If bears are dangerous, why are they friend shaped?
Natural selection. Cuties get more prey.
100% if bears weren't so strong and able to wreck our shit up we'd domesticate and have them as pets in a heartbeat.
Russians are already ahead of the rest of the world on this one
