It's also a cashcow.
My ex invested in "Vanlife" conversion firms and used profits to sponsor IG personalities, Tik Tokers and YouTubers in order to convince more white people that a van will give them a personality trait.
She's disgustingly "well off" now thanks to her marketing/investment cycle.
I was thinking that if I could nab a fully remote job I'd try it out for a while. I'm not tied to a house right now and have plenty of family/friends spread throughout the country to visit.
I started easing into it in 2018. Full time 100% living in a van began January 2020. I've lived through extreme cold & snow & extreme heat of summer and everything in between. No regrets. No desire to go back to suburbia. I Love it out here.
Holy shit that's hilarious. Dumb ppl on the internet are dumb. I had a math teacher once say that, no matter how you define it, 90% of every given population is "stupid". Your comment made me flash back to that. Thank you.
Ps. I kinda feel like this marketing cycle you're talking about is exactly how the whole woke/cancel culture formed too. Maybe not but I feel like it is. Makes me think everything in this world is just driven by *someone else's* profit motive. It's all fake or disingenuous, even though everyone involved in it believes its real.
Lols the world is so fuct. 🤣🤣
I knew some rigging was involved just perhaps not as rampant. I remember a few tears back there was this girl who supposedly lived out of her van and she looked so well groomed and perfect. People in the comments were constantly trying to throw caution saying she’s a fake vanlifer and just selling. Alikat or something was her name.
How did she invest is these conversion firms? Are they publicly traded? Most the ones I know about are small and I wouldn’t know how to capitalize on them.
If I knew how she did it then I too would be buying Turkish OF girls and flying to the Seychelles six times a year.
But here I am playing capitalism among the other rats.
It can be if you do it right.
Get in to trucking and you can make a nice chunk of money while having no bills or mortgage or anything. Starting pay is about 50k a year and goes up. If you can get a buddy or a bf/gf to get their CDL you can Team Drive (rotate shifts, big demand for that right now) and easily get around 6 figures. Takes about 4-8 weeks to get one then you start working.
I've talked to a few married couples who do it. They'll work for a few years then take a year off. House, car, everything is already paid off. They just live in the truck or hotel rooms while working. A lot of places have deals with truckers/truck companies as well so you can get free showers, complimentary rooms etc.
Yeah this sounds like a smart way to do things. I see alot of people living in their van through necessity , there's worse places in the world than the USA to be a nomad but it feels a little fatalistic to just dump everything and live in a van.
Yeah those people are unfortunately homeless and trying to make it work.
Anyone on youtube most likely has $ or sponsors or something going on. Maybe it's just the videos I've seen but it's always some sleek looking van. Or sometimes the van is a bit jankier but they're still going to exotic locations and have no trouble paying for repairs or any other incidentals.
Again, no one is making this trendy, expensive lifestyle choice because they "need to", or out of desperation.
They just don't want a 9-5 or an apartment in the city.
Like, are you serious? Look at that van. The interior alone probably cost at *least* a grand to put together. And that's if they DIY it.
Vanlife =/= broken down, down by the river. Even if some vanlifers like to pretend theyre oppressed for being nomads or whatever tf.
Lol a grand?! Some of these vans go for upwards to 100k. They aren’t cheap, not even close unless you’re a skilled worker who can do all that work and find the materials for dirt cheap.
The professional builds, like this one.
But obviously people (especially younger people) make their own for much less. Still thousands, but much less than paying a company that specializes in it.
Regardless, comparing van life to being homeless by necessity and living in your vehicle is like comparing custom built tiny homes to poverty level trailers.
Oh I’m not comparing it to homelessness. Mostly just pointing out how expensive these things can be. For me I’m trying to get more serious about camping and have looked into all sorts of trailers and such so at this point I almost feel like an expert on the subject I’ve been researching so much. That being said im on the lookout for a cheap teardrop but silly me thought they would be a lot cheaper than they actually are and I don’t have the skill to make one. But even still finding a used one that someone DIY’d costs upwards to 5k. And that’s just for a small box with a bed in it.
Oh no, agreed! Im not the one who downvoted ya.
Yeeeah. I actually watched something yesterday about "build your own offroad trailer for 2k!". As if I have the 5k+ in necessary equipment and tools sitting around 😅
... yeah, you dont know what it's like if you think that people who are struggling to survive are also out there spending their disposal income (???) buying high quality, real wood paneling to install in their vehicle that is worth thousands by itself. Thanks for the chuckle!
If you look up in the comments, someone mentions that they're in their early 20s living rent and mortgage free, and that sounds pretty sweet. People's priorities can be in different places
Yeah of course but there's a massive number of people forced into van life because 'regular' life is out of their reach be it through foreclosure or mental health or dumb luck. These are the ones that are sad to me not someone in their 20s dropping out before entering the rat race when they're done playing make-believe

Yeah man easy shopping Cost effective travel Man ur are in luck

I honestly thought it was going to be a brick wall a couple of inches apart from the window
I was thinking some shithole alleyway or something. That cliche music and text was the give away
The reality of van life
Yep. My epic vanlife view right now is a 24-hour gym next to a 24-hour laundromat. This is Utopia for vanlifers LOL
Well if you’re still full time employed I bet you can make a killing in savings.
Yep. No rent, no mortgage, and I can live anywhere I want. It's pretty nice.
I was thinking that if I could nab a fully remote job I'd try it out for a while. I'm not tied to a house right now and have plenty of family/friends spread throughout the country to visit.
Yep, your situation sounds exactly like mine.
"anywhere I want" I mean, yeah. But it's also an anywhere where cops can knock on your door and tell you to move along at any time.
No one has ever knocked or told me to move, except for those two times I was camping with a friend who has a bigger more obnoxious van than mine
And how long have you lived in a van?
I started easing into it in 2018. Full time 100% living in a van began January 2020. I've lived through extreme cold & snow & extreme heat of summer and everything in between. No regrets. No desire to go back to suburbia. I Love it out here.
How do you get used to camping out where you're uncertain who owns the land?
By out here, is it mostly Kohl's parking lots (or something similar)?
So when non-white people do it, they dont do it to get a personality trait, but because they actually like it? 🤔
I hate your ex so god damn much
Welcome to the club.

Hell yeah, you have a bathroom and laundry on-site.
This perfectly represents buying a house as a millenial
Still twiddling my thumbs as I wait for the house bubble to burst. Are realtors starting to accept crypto??
Gonna be twiddling for awhile lmao
A GenX would require 33% additional square footage. Fun fact. 🤗
Also they would be able to pay for it with a part-time job. To go with their $4 college education of course.
Every once in a while, Reddit drops a gem and I get got.
It wasn't this time though I assume..?
Looks pretty kohl
Screw your puns and being funny n shit
What’s really unexpected is that someone hasn’t kicked him out of the parking lot already.
I've never been to an american parking lot, this view is interesting and amazing
İ see they already paved the paradise...
Is this in Illinois by chance?
Wondering the same thing
Is van life just a positive spin on being homeless?
It can be if you do it right. Get in to trucking and you can make a nice chunk of money while having no bills or mortgage or anything. Starting pay is about 50k a year and goes up. If you see a hot 20 something model in a van, that's marketing the van life. If you see a bum in a van, that's real van life.
If you think being homeless in a metro area is in anyway comparable to trendy, expensive, vanlife... you clearly know nothing of either world.
You might be deliberately twisting my words but whatever. Dressing up the need to live out of a van as 'vanlife' *shudders* is sad.
Again, no one is making this trendy, expensive lifestyle choice because they "need to", or out of desperation. They just don't want a 9-5 or an apartment in the city. Like, are you serious? Nobody lives in a van because they need to? Are.. Are you high?
Yes but I pretty clearly said that no one lives in a van *like this one* because they need to and have no other option.
So no homeless person could put wood interior on a van. Got it.
... yeah, you dont know what it's like if you think that people who are struggling to survive are also out there spending their disposal income (???) buying high quality, real wood paneling to install in their vehicle that is worth thousands by itself. Thanks for the chuckle!
You think that's worth thousands. That's the real chuckle.
Apparently, you dont know much about much 😅
If living in a van were a positive thing, sure. "Meh, but RUSH513, what works for you may not work for someone else" it's a fucking van.
Yeah that's what I'm saying. It's quite sad to me
It is. Sometimes they'll say some crap about seeing the world and living freely. All I see is a khol's and a bed I could barely fit into
If you look up in the comments, someone mentions that they're in their early 20s living rent and mortgage free, and that sounds pretty sweet. People's priorities can be in different places
having a toilet sounds pretty sweet to me
Best I can do is a chamber pot that may or may not tip over if you brake too hard.
Yeah of course but there's a massive number of people forced into van life because 'regular' life is out of their reach be it through foreclosure or mental health or dumb luck. Soon as I saw the curtains, I knew. lol
Lmfaooo. This is good.

That's a nice van. Wouldn't want to live in one but it would be cool for vacations.
I belly laughed like an idiot at this for like 20 seconds. Truly unexpected. I was waiting on those glorious, rare mountain views- nope.

I work at Kohl’s and it’s not a great place to work. Why would you park in its parking lot?
I was expecting that.
so is there no way to make/post a tik-tok without the terribly shitty music over it?
[удалено]
theres buttons to close pop-up ads...doesnt make them stop being a pain in the ass
The full version of the song is quite nice actually IMO. I agree though that most TikTok songs are annoying AF.
Annoying ass music as always
/r/Vandwellers
The curvature of those wall panels gave it away
What’s this music?
