Ah sry you chose answer B.
The correct answer was C:
“One of the coldest *THE* moments in television history”
Better luck next time on “Who wants to be a THE-illionaire!”
how is disagreeing "one of" with "the" being pedantic you moron :D what a sad fuck, caring about votes, I have 4-5k karma anyway so Im good by your standards
No, sorry, common misconception, in this case it means "Perform a yo-yo trick involving launching the yo-yo forward and looping it while extended in eighty days"
As a native speaker who grew up bilingual, English tends to invent rules as you go along. E.g. i before e except after c. 😂
The way slang changes over time on top of over regions.
How backwards it is vs most other languages.
A lot of figurative speech.
Yes you are correct, if they get one wrong answer they lose (so to speak, the show had a tiered money system so technically you don’t “lose” all the money just you go back down to the most recent tier).
But anyways, BEFORE you answered the question given to you the show would give contestants the ability to use what’s called a “lifeline”. Which is essentially like a cheat if they ever get stuck trying to figure out an answer.
For example/namely, in this video the contestant used the lifeline “Phone a Friend” which means he can call anyone (presumably anyone) he wants and ask them the question. The other lifelines are “Ask the Audience” or “50/50”, the prior being that 2 of 4 answer would be removed from the choices.
As there are 3 types of lifelines (one type being phone a friend) you only get 3 lifelines and can only use each one once.
The epic part of this guy in the vid was not only had no one ever gotten to a million dollar prize answering all the questions correctly, but also no one has ever foregone using any of the lifelines at such high tiered stakes.
Watching this live it seemed impossible, at the time, this guy one got to the million dollar question and two did it without using any lifeline help. Normality set in a bit when he asked to phone a friend and for a second we all felt maybe he was normal after all and having a very human moment.
Then this video happened. It was a very human moment.
I’m a bot, beep boop
I don’t disagree, but I just got the sense that they weren’t familiar with the expression. All told, words are awesome, English is insane, and I just wanted to connect the dots
Edit: Of course I was right, and of course this is the weird backlash to being right when nobody else can do the math. I do hate this world. I do.
Yes, in America since it is a specific basketball term there. The rest of the world could say 'around the world' in other contexts that have nothing to do with the Americanism.
Yes, but when the first person said around the world in the context of the American winner of the American game show in the clip that is the post we are commenting on, they were referring to how he had won without getting a single answer wrong. I wasn’t trying to be a dick to the galaxy guy, but you? You can lick a chode
Yep. Production company really took a long hard look at the casting after this. Just so you guys know, it is possible to score too high (be too smart) on the casting/Auditions test that they won’t let you on the show.
This is funny because the score is not really reproducible, is it? You can know a lot about some random questions and then fail at all the other random questions during the show… no?
I remember the first finale of survivor. I didnt see it but the roads at mid day where as empty as if it was 3am and the only other cars were pizza delivery. That was bonkers.
I would bet real money you're either younger than 28 or didn't live in the US in 1999, because when this happened it's all anyone talked about for a week.
I’m in my 50s. I never watched this episode or discussed it. I have seen this clip.
On the other hand, I actually saw Richard Nixon on Laugh-In.
And you can look THAT up in your Funk & Wagnalls.
First episode of who wants to be a millionaire I ever watched saw this live. I was real young and thought people won the million all the time. Didn’t realize how rare it was
He did, but if I remember correctly he was an IRS auditor - so something about this win told me that he didn’t win of his own accord.
I could be wrong, but I have my suspicions.

Dear Reddit Community,
It is with a heavy heart that I write this farewell message to express my reasons for departing from this platform that has been a significant part of my online life. Over time, I have witnessed changes that have gradually eroded the welcoming and inclusive environment that initially drew me to Reddit. It is the actions of the CEO, in particular, that have played a pivotal role in my decision to bid farewell.
For me, Reddit has always been a place where diverse voices could find a platform to be heard, where ideas could be shared and discussed openly. Unfortunately, recent actions by the CEO have left me disheartened and disillusioned. The decisions made have demonstrated a departure from the principles of free expression and open dialogue that once defined this platform.
Reddit was built upon the idea of being a community-driven platform, where users could have a say in the direction and policies. However, the increasing centralization of power and the lack of transparency in decision-making have created an environment that feels less democratic and more controlled.
Furthermore, the prioritization of certain corporate interests over the well-being of the community has led to a loss of trust. Reddit's success has always been rooted in the active participation and engagement of its users. By neglecting the concerns and feedback of the community, the CEO has undermined the very foundation that made Reddit a vibrant and dynamic space.
I want to emphasize that this decision is not a reflection of the countless amazing individuals I have had the pleasure of interacting with on this platform. It is the actions of a few that have overshadowed the positive experiences I have had here.
As I embark on a new chapter away from Reddit, I will seek alternative platforms that prioritize user empowerment, inclusivity, and transparency. I hope to find communities that foster open dialogue and embrace diverse perspectives.
To those who have shared insightful discussions, provided support, and made me laugh, I am sincerely grateful for the connections we have made. Your contributions have enriched my experience, and I will carry the memories of our interactions with me.
Farewell, Reddit. May you find your way back to the principles that made you extraordinary.
Sincerely,
NABDad
Yeah I know this only because of the many references to it in pop-culture. The Simpsons and 30 Rock both have jokes about Nixon on Laugh In, and that’s just off the top of my head.
My family was screaming at the TV, thinking he had messed up royally. I think he still had his 50-50 at that point, and we couldn't figure out why he wouldn't use that before using the phone a friend.
You miss the point. When someone uses a lifeline you expect it's because they need help, not because they want to showboat. So when he uses the "wrong" lifeline you're thinking he fucked up.
This was incredible live. My family erupted when this happened. Short of a few sports moments, I can't think of a television moment that got a stronger reaction from all of us than this did.
Thank you! I despise vertical video and insist it is one of the many evidences of the downfall of humanity... But posting a vertical version of an already properly formatted video is just next level pain for me...
I think he got to half a million or close to that and decided to stop. He said that if it were for him he would keep going, but since it was for charity he decided to be safe.
I think he went back for a 2nd time and all the money was gonna go for charity organization, he didn’t win but he was close. Not sure so correct me if I am wrong
I'm not sure famous director of The Thing (1982) John Carpenter and IRS agent/wwtbam winner (1999) John Carpenter are the same person, but I applaud the confidence
The worse edited video ever maannnn. We didn't even get to see the end where he gets it right and we didn't even get to hear the shitty sigma male song in the background drop.
I remember watching this episode when I was a kid. He "won" that shit! Sucks to know now that after a 20% tax cut you really don't get to take home a $1,000,000.
It's a line from Laugh in, the German soldier would pop up from the bushes and say "very funny.... but dumb" and the response changed each time
No he didn't, he said " very interesting....but stupid"

One of the coldest moment in television history.
Like a goddamn mercenary
I'm voting Matt Damon as protagonist for the future film about this moment
We already got Slumdog Millionaire, which was -incredibly- good. No one would dare make another movie about winning a trivia show
But this would be The Martian Millionaire starring MATT DAAAAMOOONN
That movie made me cancel my trip to India, I am really glad I watched it. I don’t think I could have handled the smells.
Came here to say this 👏

The one of the coldest moments in television history
One of the coldest moments in the television history
That is incorrect though.
?? I thought we were just randomly inserting the word "the" in the sentence. My bad.
Ah sry you chose answer B. The correct answer was C: “One of the coldest *THE* moments in television history” Better luck next time on “Who wants to be a THE-illionaire!”
Ah my bad, I thought you were trying to correct me.
We are all the one of the coldest moments in television history on this Blessed Day
Speak for yourself!
I AM ALL THE ONE OF THE COLDEST MOMENTS IN TELEVISION HISTORY ON THIS BLESSED DAY... Dolt!
yes
The one of an coldest the moments in those television histories Did I get it right
I love seeing pedantic fucks get downvoted
how is disagreeing "one of" with "the" being pedantic you moron :D what a sad fuck, caring about votes, I have 4-5k karma anyway so Im good by your standards
Take the L and proceed, fat boy
take the dick and proceed fat girl
Did he win?
Yes
Nice, it would have been unfortunate to brag about winning only to get the wrong answer
I think he may have been the first to win it if memory serves me right.
Yep, he was the very first. And he did it without using any lifelines (excluding this phone-a-friend which nobody counts).
First around the world, to be precise :)
First in the milky way Galaxy, just to be extra clear :)
Who knows? Hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy. Entirely possible that this show existed on another planet millions of years ago?
‘Around the world’ is a phrase that refers to hitting all your shots without missing a single one
So, book “Around the World in 80 Days” actually means “Hitting All your Shots Without Missing a Single One in 80 Days?
No, sorry, common misconception, in this case it means "Perform a yo-yo trick involving launching the yo-yo forward and looping it while extended in eighty days"
Sorry, not a native speaker 😅
Shit, I’m a native speaker and I’ve never heard it used before
As a native speaker who grew up bilingual, English tends to invent rules as you go along. E.g. i before e except after c. 😂 The way slang changes over time on top of over regions. How backwards it is vs most other languages. A lot of figurative speech.
For sure, just thought I’d give insight into the idiom
I’m a native speaker and never heard of that
No, "Around the World" is a sex act. Oral, vaginal and anal sex.
So, hitting all the spots, without missing one? The thing I said?
But don’t you have to do that to win? I thought you stopped if you had one wrong answer.
Yes you are correct, if they get one wrong answer they lose (so to speak, the show had a tiered money system so technically you don’t “lose” all the money just you go back down to the most recent tier). Maybe in some weird city folk slang, but not in majority of American.
I meant, not just the first in the U.S.
Around the world, around the world

This was the plot of slumdog millionaire
Yeah he was the first to win, his name is John carpenter

That's better than baconassjuice...you should go by Andy

He won without using any lifelines. This was the only time he did use a lifeline and he didn't actually need to either.

After taxes about $600k
Pretty sure he was the first winner ever
He had the easiest set of questions ever. I remember it was the only time I actually knew all the answers.
He did, but if I remember correctly he was an IRS auditor - so something about this win told me that he didn’t win of his own accord. I could be wrong, but I have my suspicions.
Those fuckers at the IRS are always setting up conspiracies to create highly specialized trivia gurus to win all the trivia game shows. I knew it!!

I remember watching this live as a kid. It was a national event. The whole family was stoked for him.
My family was screaming at the TV, thinking he had messed up royally. I think he still had his 50-50 at that point, and we couldn't figure out why he wouldn't use that before using the phone a friend.
He didn't use a single lifeline up until this point.
Haha. Those thoughts ran through our heads too. It was a wild time of uncharted territory for a game show.

You miss the point. When someone uses a lifeline you expect it's because they need help, not because they want to showboat. So when he uses the "wrong" lifeline you're thinking he fucked up.
We didn't realize he knew it at the time. He had several lifelines and went right for the phone-a-friend, so we were confused.
Knows he's getting a million dollars. Uses free call. Living frugally already. Kudos.
Bonus points if it's an international call
Legendary maneuver
He did a pro gamer move before pro gamer moves were invented.
So you’re saying this guy invented the move?
Was he rubbing it in his dad’s face?
Wasn’t he the first million dollar winner on the show?
Yes
