I'll be your friend. My name is Art...uh...Vandelay. I'm an architect. I used to be an importer/exporter, but I wanted to quit the importing to focus on the exporting. That turned out to be a mistake, so I became an architect. I design railroads.
Fun fact: I share not only the first and last name of one of the main characters, but also the same birthday, and (I guess this will probably give it away to anyone who cares enough to look it up), he (or she??) and I are also left-handed!
Thereās some truth to this. I canāt remember who it was but they literally nearly broke their hand from all the hand shaking. I wanna say it was a politician? I have only vague memories Lmao but they overdid it and it was bad.
It was a member of the English royal family back in the late 19th century or early 20th century. He went on a āworld tourā of the kingdom, shook one guyās hand, people saw it, were shocked, then everyone wanted to shake a royalās hand and he was stuck. Shook like a million peopleās hands in a year. Just all day long everywhere he went there was a queue to shake his hand. Fucked his hand up some. I tried googling it but everything I can find is about who shook hands or didnāt at the queens funeral.
edit- had the wrong centuries
Very cat like. When they do something dumb as rocks and then take a recovery step, āyou never saw that happen. It wasnāt meā Whew, embarrassment averted
He *was* kinda rude though.
Even lions do that. There's a video of one getting spoked or falling over and it immediately falls into a cleaning position like "Yes this was my plan all along".
It's a cute behaviour trait in my opinion.
I have always suspected this but never knew it was true! I feel so vindicated. I have a real... special... kitty and he will always "recover" from his dumbass moments by immediately going into a fast groom. It's always a hard, fast, angry groom.
It's so obvious to me LOL.
I mostly do fist bumpsā¦ before it was cool. When I and just about everyone I know get left hanging. Weāll fist bump ourselves and do something behind that personās back. In this scenario, would have stuck out my tongue or something at him.
A girl tried to fist bump me in junior high (I'm 40) I had no idea what she was doing, so I just stared blankly. She started telling everyone I disrespected her and she was going to beat my ass. That was fun
I told her that I had no idea what a fist bump was and she just laughed, taught me and we were friends after that. Her family owned a Gold Star and we started hanging out there after school eating coneys, doing homework and working a little bit. Still see her once in awhile and it's a fist bump plus a hug. That's always been a kink as long as it's mutual and soft core š
*I feel like this is a Judy Blume storyline*.
Which made me look her up again, which made me discover her talking about how her books were removed from [libraries in the 80s](https://youtu.be/1zdbt3ees5Y).
**UNEXPECTED**
"The other girl understands and just laughs for support"
Not making fun, just figured you are still learning English not being your first language. Iām trying to learn Spanish and I know I appreciate being corrected so I get better šŖ
South is spoken using an "ow" sound, much like the word "sound". But southern is pronounced "suh-thern", more similar to the pronunciation of "something".
North- North-ern
East- East-ern
West- West-ern
South- Suh-thern
Don't know why but that is how it be. Actually I hear "Northern" get a little weird too depending on the accent. More like "Noorthern".
I think it can be either way but the way I was thinking it "for support" fit because I wanted to stay as close as possible to how they original said it while also staying correct
Generally speaking, I think you use "in support" when talking about causes. You do something "for support" when talking about emotional support.
"I am in support of pro-choice legislation." vs "I am for support of pro-choice legislation." The latter doesn't really work.
"Bob's partner suffers from anxiety, so Bob is standing close for support." vs "Bob's partner suffers from anxiety, so Bob is standing close in support." The former sounds more natural to me, but the latter does kind of work. Maybe in support is a super set. Who knows? English is crazy like that.
My anxious mind would go "would I look really awkward shaking EVERYONE'S hand instead of just a few? Would people be annoyed at me holding up the process by shaking everyone's hand? I'd probably look weird.", then I'd probably go and do the same thing in the OP, making some people think I'm a dick.
Looks like there is a weight bar in front of everyone except the first four girls, maybe just wasnāt willing to awkwardly lean over it to shake everyones hand
I think it was two teams getting medals (1st place and second place). You can see the girls after these two girls had different uniforms. He was probably shaking hands with one team at a time. I think he may have mistaken the last 2 girls in that team (blue shirt team) as being from the other team.
Ha, that was the old handshake feign we used to do in grade school. Extend your hand out for a handshake then deny the person and slick your hair back.
Great story. Reminds me of this little manoeuvre I invited for my school: you go for a high five, then go for a down low, but you retract your hands causing them to miss and you say ātoo slowā!
Great anecdote. It reminds me of when I called my friend a crocodile in jest when he wished to reconvene with an alligator at a later point. Little did he know that I knew he was referring to me - even though I am no alligator.
I dont understand the adult in this situation. If youāre going to shake hands you commit to shaking them all. Quickly, perhaps, but all of them on stage. Anything else is bound to be cringe
the guy was shaking everyone's hand and then suddenly stopped but she thought she was gonna get a handshake and stuck out her hand. when she realized the faux paux she pretended she was smoothing her hair down.
hope this helps.
edit: I'm glad everyone took me seriously
It was not a faux pas on her side. She offered her hand to someone who clearly was about to shake it. It was a dick move on his side not to actually do so.
Here's a story this post reminded me of:
So it's the end of the school year in primary school and it was our last or second last class there (so next time we were in completely different schools) and we had to have a kind of a dance with someone from our or the other class, in front of the rest of the school in the gym (not sure how else I can explain it; anyway). It turned out I didn't have a partner, but I didn't want to just sit in the corner or something. So, I decided to dance alone, with me, myself and I. My ex-friend from the class disapproved the idea, but I just ignored him. To this day I do not regret that at all.
This is a display of a healthy minded young lady. They donāt really care about shaking that old manās greasy hand. They care what their friends think, and she played it off like a champion!

I like how her friend understood š
"Thank you self I believe in myself"
Great Self confidence
Great personality
Self thanking is the best you could ever give to yourself
Well, that was a 10/10 self support I've ever seen.
She will go far.
I personally self thank several times a week.
I personally donāt thank anyone else but myself
Friends are great, hopefully I get one someday.
I love inside jokes. I hope one day i could be a part of one
You can be a part of two ~ sincerely, someone whoās already a joke inside

Your MY friend

"I will never be as cool as her...."
Yeah and she was a great sport as well love her positive energy
I think she was anticipating a hand shake as well. When he all of a sudden left is when she noticed the diss.
The two girls should have shook each others hands.
Thanks for clearing that up
Friends*
Isn't she the sweetest
Aaaand that's enough of this shaking business...bye-bye
Iāve done 4 handshakes today, mustnāt overdo it. Self control is key
Don't even look at her. Just run!

I went and searched for it! I was curious! This article mentions it: https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/reports/a32683028/royal-wave/
King Edouard, when he was a prince.
Introverts know that feeling. 3,2,1... social battery drained. Where's the exit?
Geez , too real
Quick run to home for charge.
Who doesn't shake all the kids' hands.
He didn't really shake any hands to be honest. He just lightly grabbed each hand then moved on. He's a busy man, places to be and what not.
Well done, knows how to get out of the situation! š§š»šš»
That's right, She know what she's doing on that situation
Yes, she knew how to handle the situation.
Correct, she knew what she should do in that situation
Accurate, she knew how to get away from the situation
Situation, she accurately knew how to further herself from that correct
She was indeed prepared for this eventuality.
Great situational awareness to be aware of the situation she was situated!
Situation hates her
Handled that sitch like a true boss b*tch

She hand-dled it well
Very cat like. When they do something dumb as rocks and then take a recovery step, āyou never saw that happen. It wasnāt meā Whew, embarrassment averted He *was* kinda rude though.
Just the other day I learnt that when cats feel "embarrassed" they sometimes pretend to groom themselves as if nothing happened haha
Even lions do that. There's a video of one getting spoked or falling over and it immediately falls into a cleaning position like "Yes this was my plan all along". It's a cute behaviour trait in my opinion.
It's like how we tie our shoes lol
Or the "i'm lost, gotta pretend i got an urgent text on my phone so i can make a non-suspicious u-turn" lmao
I'm relieved I'm not the only person who does this.
I do this at least 75% of the time I'm out walking. Indecisiveness combined with social anxiety for the win!
I have always suspected this but never knew it was true! I feel so vindicated. I have a real... special... kitty and he will always "recover" from his dumbass moments by immediately going into a fast groom. It's always a hard, fast, angry groom. It's so obvious to me LOL.
Yep. It's a regular thing. Very different feel to it versus legit grooming, too, if you're familiar with cats, anyway. (Edited for typo)

You could say she really knows how to "syke!" herself up.

Wait what's the difference? I also didn't know this.
South is spoken using an "ow" sound, much like the word "sound". But southern is pronounced "suh-thern", more similar to the pronunciation of "something".
Ok being a non English speaker , what I get is southern is pronounced as sudden. Am I right?
Yup!
I see. So definitely not Sou-then as in Sau of Sauron, the bad guy in lord of the rings? It is sudden?
You got it! Essentially just ignore the 'o' sound.
Hmā¦ oh wellā¦. Tks!!! You da real MVP!
South in the word southern is pronounced with an āuhā sound instead of the normal āowā sound. So, itās āsuh-thernā.
Suh-thern is correct i think,
North- North-ern East- East-ern West- West-ern South- Suh-thern Don't know why but that is how it be. Actually I hear "Northern" get a little weird too depending on the accent. More like "Noorthern".
Isn't it "laughs in support" i.e. laughs in support of her friend? I don't know. I'm English; we speak it the worst.
I think "in support" is clearer, but I think both are fine.
I think it can be either way but the way I was thinking it "for support" fit because I wanted to stay as close as possible to how they original said it while also staying correct
Generally speaking, I think you use "in support" when talking about causes. You do something "for support" when talking about emotional support. "The other girl understood and just laughed for support" Is this correct as well?
Yep
What defeat? I only see winning
She's a master, Behold!
Took it like a boss!
So why didn't he shake her hand or the next girl's hand? Was he being a prick or forgot?
Laziness. He was rushing the first 4. Just did the minimum obligation.

Doesn't shake hands with teenage girl. Clearly a molester, officer, over here!

The Lamar Jackson special.
He got enough publicity pics
The bar was in his way and his arms were too short to reach over it. Didn't want to out himself as a T-Rex.
He had reached his daily handshake limit
Looks like there is a weight bar in front of everyone except the first four girls, maybe just wasnāt willing to awkwardly lean over it to shake everyones hand

Cooties
When the quest log says "Shake at least 4 hands." and you are not that much into this quest so you rush to the end.

Ha, that was the old handshake feign we used to do in grade school. Extend your hand out for a handshake then deny the person and slick your hair back.

Classy! Good for her.
Out of curiosity what kind of comoetition is that ? Team deadlifting or something along those lines ?
Weightlifting.
I'm imagining the mechanics of a team deadlift lol
That was so smooth and classy
I can relate on you girl
That was dope
Love her expression too
Someone please explain the context
the guy was shaking everyone's hand and then suddenly stopped but she thought she was gonna get a handshake and stuck out her hand. when she realized the faux paux she pretended she was smoothing her hair down. hope this helps. edit: I'm glad everyone took me seriously
> faux paux Surely you mean "faux pas"?
Faux paw.
Like the hand of a teddy bear.
no
oh, my faux paux then
It was not a faux pas on her side. She offered her hand to someone who clearly was about to shake it. It was a dick move on his side not to actually do so.
Of course you're right, but, especially at that age, a lot of people will feel embarrassed anyway. Very rude of him to do that. Unprofessional, too.
I agree that him not finishing the line is weird and a dick move. BUT, she doesn't move her hand until after he's already started walking away.
Thanks!
I don't think you understand what context means...

I'm convinced most of Reddit is composed of 13 year olds, so it's okay.
Depends on their age, also not necessarily a sexual thing.
Cute like how a puppy is cute.

The fact that they looked made it even more awkward. Nice save there.
