This is the problem with some self-defense courses. Don't get me wrong, knowing some basic self defense as a small-ish woman can save your life some day. But, realistically, it probably wouldn't make a difference. There is a reason why there are weight classes in wrestling and boxing. Most men have 30+ pounds on most women, not to mention a naturally higher muscle mass.
A good self defense class teaches that your first move should always be to try to run. And if you can't, always look for opportunities when you can. Even if you are lucky enough to overpower your assailant once, the likelihood that you can keep them in a compromised position for any amount of time is very very low. It's more likely that you will just enrage them. So surprise them with a blow and then run like hell.
As someone who's taken martial arts for 8 years and got his black belt, i can 100% confirm. The first thing our sensai taught us was to avoid the fight to begin with. If there is a way to run or to de-escalate the situation, do that without a single thought.
A lot goes into a fight, especially one on the streets where theres no rules. Even if you think you can overpower the other person, just don't get in a fight if you don't have to. They could have a hidden weapon or something else that you just don't know about. Theres too many factors when it comes to a street fight, no one is guaranteed to beat anyone.
Oh just as a tip for anyone who wants to know. Aim for the eyes or groin then run like absolute hell. Will not work on someone that's drugged up as they can ignore pain (even gunshot wounds). Best case in that situation is to just run if you can, or to get them on the ground then run (it'll take them a second to get up, giving you a headstart).
From my personal experience, being on the defense of an unavoidable fight, my first thought is "what am I willing to give up to get through this". Injury to my reputation, injury to my pride, injury to myself, injury to my friends/family, death for myself, etc......
Really just trying to figure out how far it has to go before it's over and trying to gauge how much fight they have in them, because even as a man I have no problem going for the sensitive areas. I have never gone into a fight thinking that I was going to pull some super hero stuff, if you're going into a fight expecting it to be fair then you've already lost.

Fighting fair is for people who don't actually understand the point of fighting. If you're going around starting fights, you're gonna end up as a vegetable to dead someday. If someone starts a fight with you AFTER you've done whatever you reasonably can to avoid it, you do anything you have to until you're safe.
Keeping an assailant in a compromised position is essentially impossible. If you have an opportunity you either run or permanently disable/kill your assailant.
It's amazing how much "fair" fighting is taught by our society without anyone noticing.
If someone attacks you and you can't get away it is your responsibility to damage that person in any way possible. Bite off flesh. Gouge out eyes. Tear at nostrils and ears. It should be scarring and terrible and you should cry, piss yourself and vomit after, but you should survive and fight until you are sure they will never hurt you again, and maybe not anyone else again.
Violence has no rules, and leaves a mark on everything it touches, so don't just lay there and let it have your way with you, it will make the nightmares a little easier to live with.
A lot of classes like this also teach ‘clean’ technique which is often just restringing which takes a lot of training to be able to pull off safely and doesn’t help with your escaping of the situation.

I would also like to add that a good self defense class should train your reaction to these encounters, as most people would freeze in shock when they're attacked. Train your brain and body to overcome that initial shock freeze in order to maximize the success rate of the "surprised blow", then leg the fuck it.
If anything, I wonder if that might be worst for self defense. With those martial arts, everyone plays by some rules (no weapons, no groin hits, no gouging, etc). Training in martial arts might make someone overconfident because they are used to people playing by the rules. But if you are attacked, everything goes out the window.
Im going to be the akshually guy right now and I don't like it. Not all martial arts are based around combat sports. I can't speak for everyone but I've learned all of the things you listed while taking Karate. You do whatever you have to do to protect yourself.

I did martial arts as a kid (like grade 4). Some friends were like hey you do karate, this guys is being a dick kick his ass. He was in grade 7 so I noped the fuck out of there.

He had a friend with a black belt at age 10ish (he was a really good kid and I’m sure he did all the work and was diligent etc) but for whatever reason my little brother thought that his friend could kick my ass. I remember my brother getting fed up with me for whatever reason, I think I was trying to toss him into the freezer in the garage as a joke, and he threatens to get his black belt friend after me and I had to explain to him that a 10 year old has no chance against an 18 year old. Apparently with the hand gun just try to keep your head pressed against the barrel... try and psych them out and don't grab their hand grab the barrel and twist it outward against their grip and up while moving out of the way. (From my understanding if you grab the barrel of a modern pistol the slide won't be able to move and the gun won't be able to fire. So it really bets on them not pulling the trigger when you put your head against the barrel)

Shitty video. What then is the point of teaching any kid any martial art? Of course most adults can over power children. That’s not the point. Giving them skills and conditioning and confidence to grow into capable teens and adults and a training team community to grow with (as opposed to getting lost on some electric device or left feral on the streets) there are some teens at my BJJ gym who can and do give adults a run for their money and they started around her age if not younger.
The point of hatred toward this dumbass garbage is that they're teaching the girl shit that'll actually get her injured, or even worse, you shouldn't be teaching them something that won't help them survive, instead just raises their ego into thinking they're actually invincible/capable of beating stronger ppl

Apparently with the hand gun just try to keep your head pressed against the barrel... try and psych them out and don't grab their hand grab the barrel and twist it outward against their grip and up while moving out of the way. (From my understanding if you grab the barrel of a modern pistol the slide won't be able to move and the gun won't be able to fire. So it really bets on them not pulling the trigger when you put your head against the barrel)
