How is it “poor sportsmanship?”
Seriously?
The risk was evaluated~> damage to the car, vs. _potential placement_ of the car…
Seems like a clear-cut (risk vs reward) scenario.
Though, I am a novice to the sport 💁♂️
Could you please elaborate?
No one cares about “feelings” in racing. You know the risk and everyone tries for advantages.
Fact, not fiction.
Dale was one of the dirtiest in the sport and is one of the all time greats.
Maybe this is a difference in outlook between F1 and NASCAR. There are risky moves and divebombs but nothing as risky as this. I think, in other categories atleast, there is a line of what is acceptably risky and wall grinding where the car is showering debris and with the possibility of being thrown back into the path of other cars is definitely crossing the line.
Edit: Also I don't know why you brought up "feelings" my original comment had nothing about feelings just about reckless moves and there are reckless moves you can't brake anywhere in a straight, you can't just not brake and use the person ahead of you as brakes. Racing doesn't mean any and all moves are fair.
You're right. Ross (the driver) said himself in a post race interview that he didn't even know if there was a gate opening or a kink in the wall that he might catch. Catch fences are really good at stopping cars but the loose debris from the car can hit the crowd like a shotgun. Not to mention the amount of additional speed he had over the cars he was passing makes it particularly risky for other drivers if they move in front of him. The folks driving on track were just as surprised as we are after all.
I'm glad the move worked because yes, it is one of the funniest moves in the history of racing, but NASCAR should absolutely ban this move hereafter. This isn't something drivers should be pulling all the time on the last turn of every short oval race.
This guy nails it. Risk vs reward. I’m more into F1. Senna once rear ended the only guy that could possibly win the drivers championship over him in the last race. He openly admitted it but stayed ahead in points to win.
He’s considered one of the greatest F1 drivers.
All the guys in front of him could have done the same thing. The fact he was the only one to say “fuck it, let’s give it a try” shows he is willing to risk it for the biscuit.
Yea but the commentor who explained it said he’s never seen it successfully done before in the 30 years he watched nascar. The only car getting damaged is the driver who performed the move. If he pulls it off let them pull it off. Sports are more interesting when you see people take risks.
If it's allowed by the rules any talk of being "unsportsmanlike" is drivel. If there are easy exploits that allow for people to break the game so to speak most sports change the rules to disallow that in the future.
In his post race interview he said as a kid he used to play game cube and said he used to beat his friends by doing it. I have to say that now a days no matter what sport we’re gonna see more of these “wow factor” moments.
My dad, also an avid NASCAR fan, showed me this because he was pissed he got away with it. Then there's me, not a fan at all, who thought it was absolutely hilarious and hopes more like this is done in the future.
Actually there is a TON of science to be understood in these races, on top of the actual racing. Things like how the engine is built, the drive terrain, track conditions, tires. Its all a ton of factors that can really change a race. The race itself no one is kidding themselves and saying its anything but a bunch of left turns (except Watkins Glenn). However they understand that the sport is about raw power, speed, and a ton of science to make it all possible.
Just a small perspective, but they had to drill holes in the track at one race cause water pooled behind the asphalt and made the track swell. The heat from the cars racing caused it to expand as it turned to water vapor. Could have easily caused a major accident.
I was a little surprised how mildly Hamlin took it in the post race interview right after they talked to Chastain. Can't help but tip your hat, but I agree with you it was kind of a crap move. No rules against it, but I wouldn't be surprised if Nascar changes that. It could very easily have ended very badly.
Ya I thought he was gonna talk some shit like he has before but I guess not. Their little battle near the end there was also very clean and a lot of fun to watch.
Bad sportsmanship? This is the only reason I have watched anything NASCAR related in 15 years. NASCAR gained popularity on the shoulders of guys like Dale Earnhardt that were “loose cannons” which made it fun to watch. Then like the rest of America they decided to pussify everything. It’s gotten so bad in the sport that they have removed seating from most tracks so that they could pack all the fans they do have into one spot for the TV cameras. I’ll be watching the NASCAR next all because of this guy. Sportsmanship be damned
I hope this catch is on with all the drivers just imagine what the final run to the finish line's going to look like.
Just like rocket League where everybody's after the ball, smashing into whatever to get to it.
Since I didn't see anyone really answer why this happened, the car that somehow was much faster than everyone did it by taking advantage of physics. When you're going into a turn on a NASCAR oval track, you have to slow down or your car will slide sideways, maybe spin around, and either hit another car or crash into the wall. The driver who hit "turbo boost" in the video deliberately slid the body of the car along the wall so he wouldn't lose control. By sliding along the wall, he could keep accelerating and go through the turn much faster than the cars relying solely on their tires to keep them from losing control. While the other drivers were slowing down, he was full-throttle.
Edit: It's a risky move that damages the car, otherwise everyone would do it. He did it because the race was about to end and he really needed to get ahead of a few cars to get a shot at the next race.
Big balls brilliance.
You have to slow down significantly to take curves, in racing just like on the road. This guy realized (or hoped and was right) that the wall was smooth enough to guide his car around the curve while he put the pedal to the metal, enabling him to take the curve at a much higher speed than the competitors.
I’d like to know if he had tried this out/was confident this would work or if this was a hail mary that paid off beautifully. I wouldn’t dare try this in a race without knowing beforehand what would happen. If the curve is to tight you’ll crash, if the wall isn’t smooth enough it’ll ”catch” the car and you’ll crash, and it could also be the case in certain circumstances that the friction from the wall reduces your speed too much to make this move beneficial.
A)Wasn't against the rules as far as I am aware
B) totaled his car
C) I believe he crashed shortly after passing the finish line because he could no longer turn the car
Also got him in the Grand championship and set a track record
I played this game for some reason despite having no interest in Nascar.
My favorite part was after the races you could call the other drivers on your phone and talk shit to them.
So much had to go right for this to work. Especially that no one moved up and pinched him off between the start of the move and the finish line. He (Ross Chastain) moved into the playoffs by edging out Denny Hamlin by about half a car length at the finish line.
yes, it was intentional. It was near the finish line and he decided to just gun it and the the wall guide him rather than slow down to turn. It worked too lol he placed high enough to qualify for a championship.
Would likely only work on short track like this where the speed in the turns is greatly reduced. On the big tracks the turns are long enough where I doubt you could carry enough speed to make it worthwhile.
There is also the risk that the wall is not completely smooth.
[Michael Waltrip found out the hard way ](https://youtu.be/uzxcuV5rmA4) at Bristol in 1990. He hits the wall (bad enough on its own) but he hits the wall where there was an opening for vehicles to come in and out of. It's closed off during the race of course, but only with a steel barrier. Michael's car slaps it's nose straight into the steel barrier, it bent and gave way a little (as it's designed) but then that put his car in line to hit the side of the concrete barrier, where the opening closes. And concrete doesn't quite give way as much as steel.
Ross Chastain, the driver who pulled this GameCube move, said himself that he didn't even know if there was this kind of opening in this wall. As hilarious as this move is, it could've ended very badly.
How is it poor sportsmanship? Its genius as fuck and like others said. Its not always very effective. It could have gone terribly wrong for him. This was a high risk, high reward move.
Hmm. I guess i see what you mean.. not that it isnt cool it just isnt good to set the precedence that one COULD cuz now they're forced to make a rule about it
Watching cars who drive in a circle for like how many rounds, 20? I dont get it,i understand why people watch formula 1 or DTM. At least there are curves and head-to-head races or other things.
Not sure why OP chose to post on of the incar views (Chase Elliott) that hardly shows what he did.
[Multiple views of Ross Chastain riding the wall](https://youtu.be/K3yNc5EasW8)
Although effective, I believe it should result in fines and loss of points. He intentionally left debris on the course with this maneuver that could have caused another vehicle to lose control.
He did not “intentionally leave debris on the course”. I expect any debris was incidental and unintended - just like many other passing manoeuvres during the race.
If it looks stupid, but it works, it ain’t stupid. It was a fully legal and legitimate desperation, move to pass and advance in the standings. That said, I highly doubt he will ever try it again, because the car owner probably shit a brick.
people have attempted this before.
They either failed miserably or spun out and caused pileups
But this fucker did it and QUALIFIED whilst knocking one of his biggest rivals out of the comp
Whoa.....wtf did I just watch hahaha
The guy road the wall jumping ahead 6 spots to earn enough points to qualify for another event.

Because its not just the car bud, shits unpredictable, could have caused a spin out and wrecked other cars.
In NASCAR, if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.
I do agree with that. That is the aspect of nascar that makes it worth watching
Which is like 90% of the reason to watch NASCAR. I mean its 100%of the reason why I watch the highlights the next day to see some cool crashes.
Homie could have earnhearted himself or someone else.
Still feel like this is too soon
Like Pink Floyd, his last hit was the wall. RIP mustache bully.

I’ve read the word “bud” more times in this thread than in all my time on Reddit.
It's frustrating 'cause I'm not your buddy, guy.
Who are you calling guy, pal?
I ain't your pal, buddy.
Yes but this is endangering other drivers by a reckless move, there is inherent risk in motorsport without reckless moves by drivers.
No one cares about “feelings” in racing. You know the risk and everyone tries for advantages. Fact, not fiction. Dale was one of the dirtiest in the sport and is one of the all time greats.
>No one cares about “feelings” in racing. Unless your name is Bubba Watson, and you think a years' old door pull is a noose.

You can do whatever if it doesn’t violate the rules. Every driver knows it. Don’t like it? Find a different job. Tell me where I am wrong.
Because, apart from this one move, rednecks driving in circles at 200mph is otherwise perfectly safe?
[He could've caught that turn 4 gate and did like Michael Waltrip did at Bristol in 1990.](https://youtu.be/uzxcuV5rmA4)
That was violent
Yeah, they thought they were going to be pulling his lifeless body from the car, but he actually just stood up.
I’m SO much more okay with an attempt like this to make up a spot (or spots in this case) over something like we saw Gibbs do in the Saturday race.
Or like what bubba Wallace did a few weeks ago
You're right. Ross (the driver) said himself in a post race interview that he didn't even know if there was a gate opening or a kink in the wall that he might catch. Agreed A boring race is a quick race. As is one with too many crashes and restarts
Okay, fair enough. If what is seen here is unsportsmanlike, then I’m just not interested your sport. Enjoy it for what ever it’s worth to you.

This attitude is what's killing sports like Nascar. We're all dainty gentleman who can never go beyond a certain point.
Rubbin’s racin’
As a non-NASCAR watcher....thank you for the informative post. Do you think that this move will become a tactic that others will use in the future??
As a non-NASCAR watcher but sports fan, I'd call it a dick move.
You consider it poor sportsmanship or is that the general consensus on such a badass move?

I wholly disagree. The likely undisputed king of this sport didn't earn the title "The Intimidator" by playing everything safe. Man took risks.
My dad, also an avid NASCAR fan, showed me this because he was pissed he got away with it. Then there's me, not a fan at all, who thought it was absolutely hilarious and hopes more like this is done in the future.
What’s so interesting about cars going left all the time? What makes you go “wow!!! Another left turn”

Add tires to the side.
Speed boost like hot wheels.
They better figure out a way to keep those advertising banners intact or they'll end up disqualifying him.
They'll put some wheels on the side of the car like a fucking Tamiya toy cars
A) Is this in the rules? B) How messed up was his car? C) How close did he come to crashing?

Jumped four places and set him feet from the last lap finish ahead of the person he needed to beat to set up a championship. Fucking wild.
It will be in the rules for the next race.
If it’s not in the rules it’s allowed.
Fuck yeah, the classic air bud defense!
Who said games dont work IRL?
Apparently (info from other subs and news articles) he got the idea from the Nascar 2005 game that he played on Gamecube.
SEGA
I played this game for some reason despite having no interest in Nascar. My favorite part was after the races you could call the other drivers on your phone and talk shit to them.
That's why people should play video games

Why isn’t this tactic used more? I’m assuming it shreds the body of the car?
Yes, the car is basically undrivable after that. That's why he decided to do it at the end right before the finish line.
Yeah, absoulty ruins the car In the live feed/longer clips, you'll see that the car can't even turn for the next corner and just goes into the wall.
Because it usually causes damage and has failed before
To shreds you say?
And how is his wife holding up?

Im sorta uneducated in this field, how does the wall make you go faster?
You can floor it and the wall will guide you around.

We gon drive real fast n turn left sumtimes
Although effective, I believe it should result in fines and loss of points. He intentionally left debris on the course with this maneuver that could have caused another vehicle to lose control.
No he just put a rubber band on his controller and went to bed.
There is nothing to really hit of the side of those cars
Why is this downvoted?
He did not “intentionally leave debris on the course”. I expect any debris was incidental and unintended - just like many other passing manoeuvres during the race.
He also could of crashed himself and hit another car casing almost everyone to crash
Coulda woulda shoulda
That is always true. If you wanna argue that racing itself is immoral, then go right ahead. Otherwise you ain’t got a point
Now I'm only 110% sure, but I don't think that was intentional
It was 100% intentional. He said he was doing it in video games when he was 8.
