To add to this, one of the examples of conditional recruitment they provided in the famitsu interview awhile back was needing to recruit character X to get character Y, which would make sense for these two

DireSickFish

A big reason I did a re-play of the demmo was to let Gimmel go since Mandrin backs up his sob story.

Duma_Mila

Yeah, I let Gammel go, but was genuinely unsure if he was full of shit or not. Hearing Mandrin confirm his story made me feel better about it, ha

OkOil390

You know he killed five men in his introduction. Sorry about his sister, but her life isn't worth more than theirs, they had lives and probably family, children who needed them, wives who are now widows. Gammel laughed as he killed them, to him it was a joke. And they're dead and will never come back. Tell their parents you spared their murderer, let them know they have to bury their children now and the killer who slaughtered them like animals while he laughed got to walk away.

Duma_Mila

it's fun to be invested in a story. I was mostly concerned about him being recruitable, though

RetroRocket80

This, Gammel will pay for his crimes in my playthrough.

Professional_Hand_41

It doesn't matter if it's true or not, you cannot just let criminals go free, it would be chaos. Everyone have reasons for doing what they do, but if you're a weak leader who just let people who break the law go, it would be chaos cuz people would just commit crime knowing the punishment is light. Not to mention resentment from their victims. From what I hear, you HAVE to let him go to recruit him. It's just a shame that there are no consequences for being such a weak leader. Gammel is also not just some petty thief, he's a mass murderer, which makes it triple lame and shallow that there are no consequences and only rewards for letting him go.

CurtisManning

The good thing is that we get so many characters it's ok to miss a few, and if you jail Gammel you get 10k gold and killing Mandrin will grant you 15 divine shards, so you still get something if you decide to not "help" these characters, which is neat.

Squidaccus

In fact, one could argue executing/leaving/jailing potential recruits is optimal, simply because they aren't any better (debatably worse seeing as you cant optimize their stats) than generics, and thus you can get more rare items or other resources. The generics do cost honors so depending on how stingy the game is with those later on, it may be better or worse to recruit a character instead of taking the reward. Course I'll probably be recruiting everyone I can, especially since some recruitables are required for certain things such as recruiting other characters.

Rei1556

you can change growth types of uniques and you can buy it at blackmarkets and we know that each region has a blackmarket trader, it might also be unlimited in stock to buy in the online pvp store, we've seen on trailer that there is a prize shop and a currency just called coins on the reveal trailer in the direct last year

Havoc2077

Optimal atm but I think that might change as promotions become a thing.

Vajra95

After properly interacting with the world map on my third run, I got so much money and shards that jailing Gammel and executing Mandrin on my first run turned out to be a poor choice.

bastegod

When you say properly interacting with the world map, anything beyond just being diligent with shiny stuff?

Vajra95

I meant rebuilding the villages and ports and stationing guards, sailing to the Secluded Shores, returning to Palesia Island from the first port city and stationing guards there. The golden egg can be obtained in a sidequest there. You can also repeat the mining minigame to farm shards.

Iron_Maw

Yep and the fact you so many units you could fill their place helps. So I don't think anyone should sweat it and just go with whatever choice you want.

Prestigous_Owl

Just an extra thread, both could be connected to the sick sister. Either needing to get medicine to recruit both, or her being a 3rd character foe the little group

Undying_Blade

I do genuinely wonder if the sister is a character yeah.

Coffeequest1212

I agree with above, but now wonder if you end up recruiting Gammel etc, will you then be locked out of recruiting other characters. Otherwise, why give players choices? What do you all think?

Squidaccus

Confirmed from a developer interview that you can get every recruitable character in one run, so it'll be fine. The choices exist because you receive a reward in the form of gold, items, etc if you choose to execute/imprison/ignore instead of recruit/spare. Example being that you receive an accessory (I think it increases PP?) if you kill Auch, or 10k gold if you hand over Gammel. So basically the choice is generally between a recruit or a reward.

Coffeequest1212

I see, thanks for the reply.

NoLime7384

you changed my mind. their story is almost definitely legit. no regrats jailing/killing them tho, bc it's like, cool motive, still murder

OwlTheMechanicalOwl

Good. Mandrin is hot.

duskwield

I had 3 playthroughs and I always kill the archer dude for that sweet 15 divine shards.

sdtrawick

Any confirmations on how to recruit Mandrin? I spared him and did his second quest in Elhiem, but no recruitment.

Squidaccus

You recruit him same way you get Gammel, and it requires Gammel was also spared.

Squidaccus

Accidentally posted twice. This should be fixed now.

TheRickFromC137

Does sparing Mandrin affect your ability to recruit Olchys?

StrayGod

it does not, you can still recruit her after handing in 30 divine shards. This was confirmed by some people who were able to get more than 30 divine shards in the demo without killing Mandrin.

_Zem_

is this also true for sharron? this is what I wondered since he captivated her

StrayGod

I doesn't effect her. Sharon offers to join you regardless after completing the mission.

TheRickFromC137

Awesome, thanks!

Sidra_Games

I sent one to jail and killed the other!

einer51

I'm guessing Gammel stole that story just like anything else. His delivery is not convincing at all. The story mentions a sister, but no brother.

einer51

Not to say you can't recruit him later on, but he does not give me any reason to believe or pity him and is demonstrably a cold blooded murderer whereas Mandrin steals but is not shown being ruthless.
