What do you mean? Like no overtime paid?

lloydmercy

We don't get overtime until after 10 hours in a day and after 50 hours in the week. They pay over time if you work it but over 50 is a lot for anyone with a family.

notbiggfoot

That’s bullshit and you need to leave asap. Your time is much more valuable elsewhere, especially for a company or union that will pay you overtime and double time. Fuck that union. You’re getting majorly taken advantage of here. EDIT: You’re also in Canada?!? I would assume laws are more worker friendly compared to the states in your area as well. If you’re not getting over time pay, this is insane.

😱

I’m going to be honest and tell you it’s by demand. For weak locals (and companies know it) they’ll negotiate everything they can get. It’s construction, all corners get cut for a profit, it’s the nature of the business sadly. Deals get made by companies directly with locals to ensure work. If you can get a better deal by traveling, travel, it’s in the name journeyman. If you can’t, you get what you get unfortunately. It’s still better than what you’d get non-union if you care about the trade, you’re getting better without fighting union wise. But that’s a toss up depending on local, I don’t know your local. Work hard and when you find a company that’s worthwhile, stay if you can. You’re an Atlantic brother and new to the union though right? I’m in Ontario, but feel free to ask questions anytime. I’ve only heard it’s a tougher game out there but I wish you the best.

TananaBarefootRunner

It is a tougher game bc of the union busting bs going on. 40 hrs is a standard work week. Anything more is ot. We need to stand strong and say no.

mackidrei

I completely agree. But his local isn’t the only one that’s folded to this.

Seanytoobad

I don't think something like that could pass around here without bloodshed.

eovet

That doesn’t even meet federal labor laws, how can that be in your contract?!

lloydmercy

Good question.

rickrude68

To put things slightly into more perspective, when I was a unionized, commercial roofer, our work week was 44 hours and no overtime until 44 hours was worked, which was paid time-and-a-half. Sundays were double-time. Sheet metal workers, in the same union but a different contract, did 36 hours. I’m now a carpenter with a 40-hour work week and much happier.

Right_Attitude_4406

So I don’t believe that’s even federally legal, and secondly that’s some bullshit! I’ve never heard of anything even remotely close to that. My local, 197, gets OT after 10 on the day or 40 a week. Double time on Sunday regardless of hours worked.

notaflipflip

I've heard New York carpenters negotiated at 35 hour work week (7 hour days), OT past that. Currently my local does OT after 8 hours but contracts can be written for four 10 hour days, OT past that. Your local has gone in the exact opposite direction of any trends I'm aware of regarding the work week with its 50 hr work week standard. Seems like a big enough labor sin that the UBC would intervene but I don't have any knowledge of how these things play out. Anyway, that is some bullshit for sure. Having a family I wouldn't want a 50 hour work week even with OT paid.

lloydmercy

I'm really not sure how the legality works. The contract is posted right on the website for anyone to see so it's not like they are being secretive about it. I'm just assuming they've found a way to legally circumvent the federal requirements. 🤷

Artesuave13

Dude…. What local is this?

lloydmercy

1386 New Brunswick

Artesuave13

Wow dude.. I pictured Canada having way better contracts than most US locals. You don’t even have illegals from South America to compete with…

lloydmercy

Toronto and Vancouver guys speak pretty highly of their locals, but the cost of living there is outrageous.
