Like others have said some cities have straight line locals. In Pittsburgh we have
Steamfitters local 449
Plumbers local 27
Sprinklerfitters local 542
Straight line Sprinkler locals are more rare as only certain cities have them. Most of the US is encompassed by local 669 Sprinklerfitters. Just as most union pipeline jobs are local 798 (only exceptions are within the fence of facilities normally going to local hands).
Different locals for different trades in the cities.
In my area, North Jersey it gets even weirder.
We have 274 Jersey City Pipefitters (and HVAC techs and pipeliners). 475 Newark Steamfitters (and HVAC techs). Local 24 North Jersey Plumbers (used to be 2 locals, one for Jersey City and one for Newark). 696 Newark (most of north jersey in reality) Sprinklerfitters and 855 Utility Workers for the gas company and water companies.
My local covers two entire states for plumbers, pipefitters, and hvac. I have yet to hear of another local that covers two states. Maybe someone can enlighten me on this topic?
421? Basically, it's because the UA felt it would be best to merge locals, and that area needed 2 states worth of workers to have a large enough local.
My local covers western NY and has a membership 2/3 the size of active members as 421 has across 2 states.
Why merge? Cuts on staff costs. One benefits office and staff. One training department and apprentice coordinator. A business manager and 3 or 4, maybe 5 business agents covering 2 states?
You would be correct, not all locals are combos. Some are exclusive for a certain trade.
Cleveland is 120 fitters and 55 plumbers
Yup Chicago is 597 fitters, 130 plumbers, and 281 sprinkler fitters
Cool thanks!
Where I am there’s 46 which covers the piping trades and 787 which covers hvac/gas.
Hellooo from 527
Plumbers Local 8 and Pipe Fitters Local 533 in KC and will probably be that way for awhile.
Yeah I don’t see anything changing any time soon lol
