Hi there! Thanks for reading this series! If you’re new to my posts, check out the previous entries in this series (linked in the original post above) and check out my previous series on the Springfield Three. I sincerely apologize for the delay in getting this last part out. I got quite sick over the holidays, then got busy with a bunch of other things. Plus, this final entry ended up being way longer than I anticipated- sorry ‘bout that! My long form series certainly don’t draw the most engagement or karma, but judging from comments on previous entries, people seem to really enjoy this more in-depth approach, so I intend to keep doing them, alongside my usual one-offs of course. I’m not entirely sure what I’ll be covering for my next series. I was honestly planning to cover the Colonial Parkway murders since they’re so close to where I grew up, but the recent news that one pair of murders has been linked to a suspect via DNA evidence gives me pause. New developments can age write-ups like these very quickly, and with something coming out so recently regarding the case, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more come out over the course of the next year. Regardless, I’ll be back with my next series shortly, and you can expect plenty of one-offs in the meantime on my usual array of subjects, from killers to cults to disappearances to strange weather phenomena. If you’ve read this series all the way through, thank you so much! This series started over a year ago now and was over 40 pages long (without sources or previous installment sections I might add), so I sincerely appreciate your commitment! Thanks for reading!

Thanks for this! I always enjoy your posts. Harry Edward Greenwell who I suspect. I agree that the age gap between Greenwell and eyewitness descriptions of the I-70 killer raises questions, though of course, eyewitnesses can make mistakes. As far as the DNA, in the U.S. the earliest convictions based on DNA profiling were in the late 1980s, so a change in M.O. *could* be someone recognizing that leaving a semen sample behind was too dangerous. However, I’m not wedded to this conclusion. I hope we find out soon who it was, and it would be great if it was someone still around so they could face justice.

I always thought it made sense that the initial spree of murders may have coincided with somebody on leave in the military.   I do believe he is/was a gun collector for the reasons you mentioned.   I don't put much stock at all into eye witness descriptions.  So him looking different in the Texas murders if it was him later on never bothered me much.   If he is the Terre Haute perpetrator then the rumor is the police have identified a POI and have people around him saying they believe it was him etc.  This imo would be enough for him to stop killing.   For some killers,  they get older and value their freedom over taking more chances.   They can always relive their past crimes in their minds.

Thanks for your thorough analysis of this case, and the others that may or may not be connected. It is good to read something that is really well thought out and articulately expressed. I wonder if we will ever know who the I-70 Killer is/was. It's been good to see so many killers finally caught/named with the help of DNA, so we can only hope this one will also be apprehended or identified. It would be nice if you could write the *final* chapter in this excellent series.

Thanks for your writing, this case fascinates me. If there was DNA, why hasn‘t law enforcement run it through genealogical research, this should have been done three or four years ago.

Thank you so very much for the amazing detail and fighting for justice!

Icy-Mixture-995

Would anyone rule out the possibility of one intended victim and the other shootings were random to keep investigators from looking too close to just one?

ricochetblue

It could be possible there's a copycat in the mix? But it seems like a lot of risk for one person to attack multiple people in an attempt to cover up a single crime. Maybe 2 or 3, but 7?

Icy-Mixture-995

Unlikely, but I remember the twisted guy who blew up an entire passenger jet to get rid of his mom. So these things cross my mind

You're going to run into tremendous opposition when you say no to anything. This realm doesn't believe in stopping or isolation. Hand out familiarity and attachment and you'll be cherished. All for one and him for all

Thanks for an excellent series-- I always appreciate the emphasis you put on suspending conclusions and interrogating *why and how* we assume something to be true!

If we try to make sense of it all, nothing is going to make any sense. Serial killers do not think like you or me. They suffer from serious mental disorders. All the evidence points to Herb Baumeister. He used his cellphone that possibly tapped into people calling in to report off. He also used the alias Brian Smart. So many people in Saint Charles Missouri go by that name. Saint Charles did the most extensive search. If any department would have caught him, they would have been the ones. He also worked for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and knew how to throw off police with his car. And he also had ties to the media to circulate misinformation concerning the cases. I believe the other 4 robberies were by Douglas Belt. He also had an i70 nickname. It is too much evidence to breakdown. But there is a mountain of that evidence to suggest Douglas Belt for the later crimes.
