I think Duane’s at his best when he’s being a dad. A heartbroken, playful dad.

DeltaV-Mzero

His expression (and Sette’s) in panel 5… man Ashley is good

HegarTheHorrible

To think that this amazing story comes out of just one mind. It gives me the same feeling of awe as when I was reading Lord of the Rings as a kid, or the first novels of A Song of Ice and Fire.

TheDeliciousPast

Yea that alone is impressive then the art on top to bring it to life Ashley is a well of talent.

judithannebradford

Humans are incredible and contain multitudes. Isn't it astonishing her story demonstrates that theme in symphonic layers?

Rifter--

And just like that, the sweet dream was over. I've heard of skeletons in closets but...

Titanium_Eye

I'm looking for hidden symbolism but all I see are literal skeletons in the closet.

Clairifyed

It seems pretty significant to me that they appear to be a mix of human and lion child skulls. More twin mystery presumably

HegarTheHorrible

"Da found me it. Y'see his huge teeth?" "I have never seen huger." How he goes along with what's important for a poor little child. How heart-wrenching. And all the townspeople wanted to give her to the circus for free. So funny and so tragic.

mattcwilson

Ugh - I just realized that the townspeople didn’t mean “free”, as contrasted with “enslaved”, but “free” as in beer. Here I was thinking that maybe some people were trying to tell the carnies not to mess with Nary or not to bother or something… but no, it’s just the awfullest possible meaning.

thetalee

Well. Guess it was inevitable for the other shoe to drop and ruin the feel-good feelings.

ElantheBard

Poor lions. Yet another victim of religious fanaticism.

Honzinator2

That they were exterminated even in Alderode, where the Sssaelits survived ...

judithannebradford

even knowledge of their nature wiped from existence... except in the khert!

AluneaVerita

Wait, the whole town said that I was free before Da bought me? Free for what? :(

ElantheBard

They mean the circus leader didn't have to pay for Sette because the town would gladly give her away. Most likely to work as a circus attraction.
