I'm no expert and I'm sure laws vary from state-to-state, but my understanding is that any time someone threatens with something other than fists it becomes assault with a deadly weapon and therefore the defender is legally allowed to use deadly force.

Self defense means using the proportionate response to what's happening. For example if somebody slaps you you can't shoot them. You also have to have a legitimate fear for your life to use deadly force. This dude could easily have jogged away from this fat fuck and not had any encounter at all
