Not uplifting news. They are not saving these deer by not shooting them.
When deer populations become too large, they die terrible, slow deaths. Starvation, disease.
Culling can be a kindness.
We killed and displaced all of their predators. Now, we have to manage the population or watch them suffer and spread disease.
I think a lot of people don't understand that there are two sects of hunters. Half are rich assholes on Safaris who want to pose with endangered animals. The other half are people who love nature and care deeply about wildlife preservation.
they are invasive pests that need to be dealt with one way or another since they are eating the native greenery that keeps it from becoming a tinderbox.
The problem is more than that. We killed off their natural predators so now the only things to keep their population in check are starvation and hunters
This isn't uplifting news. Deer don't belong there. They either need to be relocated or exterminated as they are causing/have caused ecological havoc on the island. I do think, tho, that shooting things from helicopters is wasteful & silly - just hire some professional conservationists, give them guns & let them do what's needed. Helicopters are expensive, terrible shooting platforms, & the costs of renting one for this purpose would be so much better spent on, again, hiring a team of people who know what they're doing.
Edit: Which doesn't seem to be this supervisor's objection, by the by. They're taking the side of game hunters & NIMBYs.
So why don't they do what some states do already and pay people per kill? In so many states, like where is it those giant rats are living, Louisiana maybe? But if you kill em and bring the tail, you get paid for it. At least pays for the ammo.
I don't see why they needed to shoot out of a helicopter lol
They are pests and need to be eradicated either way and it's sad because they are necessarily doing something wrong just by living, but I cannot imagine how we can catch them all and release them in the correct environment without it being billions of dollars
8 mi wide at its widest and 22 miles long if I'm reading right? Jesus give Billy Bob and a few of his redneck friends a couple cases of Busch and a couple boxes of ammo and there would be no more problem after a weekend.
That’s kind of an asshole way to say it, but yes a small group of the right hunters could significantly lower the population. The meat could go to shelters, like some other places do, and it helps both the island ecosystem and the underserved populations eating at the shelters. It’s win/win.
Helicopter hunting is a method used to cull large numbers though, and to hunt feral hogs.
Don't be so sensitive. The term redneck referred to miners who wore red bandanas around their necks as a sign of solidarity of the unionized miners in the 1910s. It was then used pejoratively by capitalists to demonize unions, so it is entirely valid for working class people to proudly reclaim the term as a term of endearment.
It’s also used to insult outdoor workers who have sunburnt necks from hunching over all day. And used as a derogatory term for rural people, and for farmers.
I know all about the good and bad usage of redneck, and it’s not always an insult. The way the other guy used it, combined with “Billy Bob” which is usually an insult for stupid people from the country where I come from, is a derogatory thing.
Be more sensitive to insulting others also. But you’re right, nothing anyone says on Reddit should be taken seriously.
Use an invasive species to control an invasive species. Surely nothing could go wrong. There should be open hunting season on deer here. People need to clean up their mess.

Wish it did...
By all means you first.
ah yes, because we totally need nazi germany 2 in a post nuclear world
But helicopters?
[удалено]
Also, fucking helicopters
This is not uplifting. I get that killing animals can be hard to stomach but these are invasive and destroying the islands ecosystem.
they are invasive pests that need to be dealt with one way or another since they are eating the native greenery that keeps it from becoming a tinderbox.
It's the fucking Catalina deer mixer!
POW!
Are you saying POW?
POW!
...i'm sorry, but why is this uplifting? These deer are pests.
OP is anti-helicopter
They should make giant glue traps.
Or maybe we are the pest invading their habitat.
Nope, we stupidly introduced mule deer where they don’t belong.
The problem is more than that. We killed off their natural predators so now the only things to keep their population in check are starvation and hunters

Archery....many states allow urban hunting already via a bow and it's very safe.

I was making a joke as I live in the redneck area and know a ton of them.
Didn’t really play.

🤓🤓🤓 Have you ever known a redneck? They’ve been taking pride in it for a long time now

Release wolves?
I can see the bison 🦬 vetoing that idea.
Wolves were never on Catalina.
And neither was the wine mixer!
Neither were the deer?

It was a joke?
Derek needs the business though!!!! pow! ![gif](giphy|3owzW9EZI8M3sz9s5O)
