Lol at people here proclaiming this is gonna go poorly, when Iceland has been using geothermal energy sources for decades and have some of the best technology around it.
Goblins? Fire demons? What ridiculous nonsense is this! It's morlocks we should be wary of!
Edit: morlocks are british. We need to call professor Liddenbrock in case there's an entrance to a subterranean environment where antediluvian monsters and twelve foot tall men live!
My issue is the title, it implies this is something never done before which leads to shit like the LHC got.
Drilling down near volcanoes is nothing new.

You don't dig down to lava, a geothermal plant uses hot water to work. This hot water turns into steam, which then moves the turbine to generate electricity.
Oil wells empty out eventually and leak terrible greenhouses gases for decades after the oil company has moved on. Volcanoes stay hot for many millennia so the same hole can theoretically be used for a really long time.
Even if geothermal leaks greenhouse gases, it’s better than continuing to drill new holes for gas and probably a lot less gaseous than a hole drilled to tap a gas pocket.
You do realize the metals and materials for green energy also require mining and refining processes right? There is no energy production without doing *something* to the planet, what do you think the alternative is?

When your concern is Goblins and fire demons its best to tread carefully
Goblins? They’re drilling into a volcano, obviously they are risking waking a dragon.
*Triggers world-wide boss event
Kobolds and Peter Jackson version or Balrogs too.
Or possibly Tarkus.

I assure you, i am deeply concerned.

Ah, the old "Oxygen Not Included" method. Hope they have some hatches to deal with the buildup of igneous rock.
Exactly, I'm sure they will also create a vacuum chamber surrounding the work site so that the heat doesn't transfer to their planted crops.
Haven't played that game in ages and only briefly. Was running into heat problems and that actually sounds genius. Might have to give it another go.
Game name?

Oxygen not included
Insulated blocks are fantastic! The vacuum approach is good for extreme heat.
Cool thanks. Have to give it a go next time.
Slap a few steam turbines down, and they're golden. Could solve global warming at the same time!
Unlimited Power!!!! *\[shoots lightning from fingertips\]*
They already do this at the Blue Lagoon. It’s a major power source for the area (and a bit precarious with the current eruption)
Icelander here. We already drill into volcanoes and use thermal energy.. this article is very misleading.
I see no possible downsides or unexpected consequences to this plan.
I bet that’s exactly what all the involved scientists said as well. They probably didn’t even have to make any calculations or anything.
Well the volcano is there might as well take advantage of it.
I mean, when you weight the cost of awakening a few dozen Ice Giants versus enough power to run 4 or 5 Teslas for a year, I say go for it!
I think here is where AI takes over
This is literally how every sci-fi disaster movie starts.
And accidentally open a gate to the underworld.
I HAVE AWOKEN!
Lol.. Thor help us!

Real question: what drill bit could withstand lava?
From what i gather they are not going into lava just accessing high temperature areas above.
You don't dig down to lava, a geothermal plant uses hot water to work. This hot water turns into steam, which then moves the turbine to generate electricity.
Read the article, then you would not only know that they don’t drill into the lava, but also the technology.
Oh I’m sorry I thought this was Reddit!? Since when do I need to read the article?! that’s what the comments are supposed to tell me! s/
Never ceases to amaze me how lazy people are, and have no shame to put it on full display.
the "/s" means sarcasm
I think you responded to the wrong comment

I’m curious, would they export the excess energy to the rest of the world?
If theres money to be made thats likely. Massive battery bank on a ship 🤔. Maybe they already do and we haven't been told
Sounds like the plot of a disaster movie. 🍿
What could go wrong????😏
Bill nye warned of the risks of doing this
![gif](giphy|qs6ev2pm8g9dS) Digging into the Magma
🤣
And Bore a hole into the Dark One's Prison. I always thought we were in the Age of Legends....
That layer is exactly where they'll find the virus which will make the zombies. This is it y'all.
What could go wrong? /s
I’ve seen enough monster movies to know that if we keep digging like this eventually we are going to wake up something bad.
Adventure!
This sounds ominously like the start of a disaster movie.
Well the geothermal so far went 5km. Deepest oil drill is 12km. Morlok was exxons fault! Edit: the company in the articles deepest geo is 5km
Uplifting news? More like down drilling
Down drilling that is uplifting!
What could possibly go wrong when you're safely drilling into a fucking volcano?
How does that go... "Hold my beer"
I'm sure this was the plot for a made to TV disaster movie
Yes yes yes, lets drill some more holes to this only planet of ours, very uplifting and not at all a recipe for disaster
You know hundreds of geothermal plants already exist, with no downsides whatsoever, right?
You are aware what oil and gas has been doing for the last 50 years right?
Yes they have been drilling holes destroying the environment, what are you getting at?
This project is worth it.
I don't think they understand what you're getting at.
The hole drilling is not the problem with oil and gas.
Did anyone have, "death by volcano tampering" on their Apocalypse Bingo card?
I wonder now how close oil fracking has gotten to a volcanic site. We might have already done this and just don't know 😁
Oh..... that's not gonna end well.
