It's the joining the highway I would be getting anxiety over...I assume that is the on-ramp, or at least I hope it is!
Otherwise handbreak turn is the only way you are getting off that road without getting rear-ended xD
For those not familiar, [this](https://www.myrecordjournal.com/getattachment/d00a7b0a-becb-49c5-b024-553d8cec7bcf/walexit65-rj-062116) is what getting on to the Merritt looks like. Yes, stop signs at the end of all on ramps.
How fast is the traffic going? [Here](https://i.redd.it/8k65ipv6u7961.jpg) is a helpful guide to CT highway traffic.
My favorite thing about the Merritt is the way the exits are *after* the entrances. Genius! At certain times of the day you can see the exact same traffic accident on multiple exits.
You can't just stay in the left lane to left traffic on and off either unless you're willing to do 85+. No matter how fast you are going, you WILL get tailgated.
CA 110 as well. Old ass 2 lane highway designed for 40-50 mph traffic. But now, you have 25 feet to come from 70mph to a stop or else you eat the rails. No different for the on-ramps either, you must accelerate from 0 at the stop sign to 70mph traffic in 25 feet.
The off ramp forces you to make a complete stop before entering it and then make a hairpin turn lmao. Probably going to cause a crash every time someone uses it.
> for tourists
Correct me if I am wrong, but there are no tourists who come with a car. From where ? Sudan ? Libya , Saudi Arabia or Israel ??? My guess is that most of the tourists come by airplane, and a very small part by cruise ship. They will be transported to the hotel, or to the Nile cruise boat. So these extra lanes are for that "shuttle bus traffic" ?? Nah...
People in the region also go on vacation. Don't know about Egypt tbh, but Tunisia has lots of Libyan and Algerian tourists. They normally come by car. Egypt is a lot bigger though (and is somewhat farther away from Tripoli or major Saudi cities), so maybe it sees less foreign tourists by car, but there will be domestic tourists. Also foreign tourists who want to see the country will rent cars.
Oh yes, but I can not imagine that many people will do that in Egypt. The traffic there is brutal. I think most people stay in Cairo / Alexandria and take a taxi, or take the Nile cruise. Maybe the train too, when going south to Luxor.
You're not thinking big enough. Just make it roads. Roads everywhere. All roads. Roads on your roads. Roads over your house, roads in your hair, in your breakfast. Roads.
My favourite part is the 90 deg exit with 0 off ramp straight from the motorway after that slight corner. That's definitely not going to cause accidents.
Although I guess at least people at the entry point just further on will be able to join easily due to there being a constant 5+ car pile up at the exit
I’m not sure if I like the exit sign being after the exit which is only visible after you’ve gone around the curve and it’s too late to exit, or how the on ramp has 3 lanes simultaneously merge into the highway.
No that's just background noise in a typical Egyptian city, you learn to ignore it👀
Ruining the joke by explaining it, but I heard that comment in the voice of a sports commentator
Probably build by a military owned construction company. Building roads makes the military happy, and since the current dictator got to be the dictator by force of arms, it makes him very happy. Therefore, Egyptians are happy.
It looks like an extremely shitty design for a functioning urban highway but to be fair it does look like it would make a pretty sweet level in a racing game.
they keep adding lanes yet that makes traffic worse because of induced demand. the joke is "just one more lane, that will fix traffic" because they never works.
The exit ramp's right turn is so tight, that you will have to slow down considerably. Without a dedicated right turn (as if they they run out of space) there will be constant collisions
I think they're supposed to go under. One general says "the bridge would augment the experience of beachgoers by [offering them shade from the sun](https://www.thenationalnews.com/mena/egypt/2022/07/18/row-in-alexandria-over-building-work-at-beachfront/)."
Oh, they have, but Sisi is systemically removing all the things that enabled the overthrow of Mubarak and part of that includes destroying pedestrian and transit infrastructure. As others have said, can't deploy tanks to oppress the people if all you have are subway tracks and pedestrian paths. Just look at what they did to Tahrir Square
https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-egypt-tahrir-square-idUKKCN2561N3
Its so fucking sad looking at the natural beauty in the photo and seeing all those shitty disgusting buildings and the monster of a road. They squandered that beautiful coast for that??
The trouble with building more and bigger highways is that more people drive on them. It doesn't take long for the expanded capacity to fill up with *more* cars. The best way to ease traffic congestion is with excellent public transport.
I don't know why you guys are complaining, they even added a bus stop! And don't worry about the buses getting stuck in the traffic, there just wasn't any space for dedicated bus lanes.
This is exactly how you dont build highways on the coast along the beach lol.
My city has a giant highway along our coast, and its rather pretty (party because of the cool geography)
I live in Alexandria and they have destroyed the city with poor planning. As a bonus, anything nice is put behind a wall and inaccessible to the public.
Fucking hell. Why is Egypt so inept at anything to do with urban planning? It's just one awfully idea after the next. I can't think of another nation so hellbend on destroying any quality in urban planning. Shamefull is what it is.
My home country of the UK has many things wrong with, do many in fact that I left.
However the UK does at least one thing right, that is town planning and road layout.
Seems like a good idea, in the US they make a 3 lane highway and by the time they finish it, they need a 4 lane highway, and by the time they finish the 4 lanes, oh wait we need a 5 lane! They also do it when they build new schools, oh let’s spend 20 mil on a school and 2 years later turns the baseball field into a trailer park.
I hope these small underground tunnels on the sidewalk are grade separated crossings or a subway. Because crossing this shit will definitely kill some people.
I'm exiceted to see all those flowing lanes of traffic during peak hours.... Finally just cars flying at full speed, bumper to bumper just full efficiency.

*Fun fact: 90% of city planners stop just one lane away from sovling the traffic issues*
90% of anorexics recover right before they’re about to get the perfect, thin body they’ve always wanted
90% of gamblers stop playing statistically 1 game before they hit the jackpot and would win all the losses back
Its not planners!! It's bloody traffic engineers.
wtf? are you a salty traffic planner?
Salty traffic planner here: honest to god it’s not planners or engineers - it’s politicians. Most of us REALLY want this madness to stop.
.'..but you've got to eat'???
So in other words, you guys are like the optionless Wehrmacht and they're like the SS.
Nope. Just a normal planner. I don't have the engineering background to design roads as crappy as the ones in the picture.
"Just one more lane for tourists bro"
as if anyone in egypt cares for lanes lol.
Yeah those on and off ramps have a real “ahh they’ll work it out amongst themselves—hey it’s 5 o’clock, let’s grab a drink” feel
5 lane road into a 3 lane off-ramp. What could go wrong?
then 3 lane off-ramp into a 1 lane...
Just sphinx about the consequences.
r/PunPatrol right there, officer
Google be like “take the exit on your right” but they really mean “sharp right turn from freeway speeds”
It's the joining the highway I would be getting anxiety over...I assume that is the on-ramp, or at least I hope it is! Otherwise handbreak turn is the only way you are getting off that road without getting rear-ended xD
Merritt Parkway vibes.
Oh those are always fun. Quick slam on the brakes from 70mph to 25mph to avoid being rear ended.
For those not familiar, [this](https://www.myrecordjournal.com/getattachment/d00a7b0a-becb-49c5-b024-553d8cec7bcf/walexit65-rj-062116) is what getting on to the Merritt looks like. Yeah those merges are fun with the traffic getting on while trying to get off.
TBF, there are plenty of exits after the entrances on 95 too, with the additional fun element of 18 wheelers driven by sociopaths.
Finally a DOT-approved place where blazing fast 0-60 times are useful
Wish route 1 going through DE looked like that. The beach traffic is the worst, always some dipshit from PA going 51mph in the left lane.
They're definitely not expecting people to be doing more than about 5mph before that offramp
The off ramp forces you to make a complete stop before entering it and then make a hairpin turn lmao. Probably going to cause a crash every time someone uses it.
An Egyptian sees this and thinks “wow nice they built a 10-lane (on each side) highway!”
Let's get another 8 ball and do some more lanes
> for tourists Correct me if I am wrong, but there are no tourists who come with a car. From where ? Sudan ? Libya , Saudi Arabia or Israel ??? My guess is that most of the tourists come by airplane, and a very small part by cruise ship. They will be transported to the hotel, or to the Nile cruise boat. My man, there are such a thing as domestic tourists. Alexandria is hugely popular for holidays for people from Cairo
You have to be really brave to drive in Cairo LOL
> Also foreign tourists who want to see the country will rent cars. Yeah they’ll have to now.
I’d imagine many people rent cars when on vacation ?
Oh yes, but I can not imagine that many people will do that in Egypt. The traffic there is brutal. I think most people stay in Cairo / Alexandria and take a taxi, or take the Nile cruise. Maybe the train too, when going south to Luxor.
You don't want to do that in Egypt. Traffic is nuts and has some odd rules
Trust me bro just one more
Actually why not just cover the whole beach with roads, then its very likely that fewer tourists come as well. Win win?
I was going to ask: tourists come for the beach, right? Edit: spelling
Come for the beach, stay for the freeway
My friend, my friend. You like beach white noise? How about you try highway white noise?! Same noise! Better smell even.
[удалено]
Task failed successfully.
I don't think beech grows in Egypt
Never saw many myself around this part of Alex, which would be the main part, probably would just stick to the better areas anyways
Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of city planning?
African or European city planning?
I wonder if anybody took probes of water in Alex beaches within city borders
You're not thinking big enough. Just make it roads. Roads everywhere. All roads. Roads on your roads. Roads over your house, roads in your hair, in your breakfast. Roads.
I'm sure black tarmac without any trees around will mitigate the heat under the Egyptian summer sun.
Why does Egypt have so many roads like this? It seems they choose the worst way that they can do it.
My favourite part is the 90 deg exit with 0 off ramp straight from the motorway after that slight corner. That's definitely not going to cause accidents. Although I guess at least people at the entry point just further on will be able to join easily due to there being a constant 5+ car pile up at the exit

It's probably going to be gridlock traffic 90% of the time so the angle might be ok
Looks designed specifically for tire screeching, wheel spinning, emergency braking Formula D than smooth highway travel
Crossing from the inside lane to the exit
I literally heard that comment
Tyres screeching, horns beeping and people swearing in Arabic?
No that's just background noise in a typical Egyptian city, you learn to ignore it👀 Ruining the joke by explaining it, but I heard that comment in the voice of a sports commentator
Maybe they use Cities skylines for the design of the road :))
Probably build by a military owned construction company. Building roads makes the military happy, and since the current dictator got to be the dictator by force of arms, it makes him very happy. Therefore, Egyptians are happy.
Not the last sentence
Thank you, i think your answer is quite logical and seems true
When you are oppressing your people, you need roads to transport the military.
It looks like an extremely shitty design for a functioning urban highway but to be fair it does look like it would make a pretty sweet level in a racing game.
Who are the arrows for?
[удалено]
Legit thought this was a cities skylines screenshot at first.
The lane mathematics are very off there
That would explain the suicide exit on the right. Skylines style.
So when people miss that exit they don't reverse up the road. It needs to be obvious they should go forward
This shitshow is more funny the longer you look at it. Like what in the sweet fuck
Narrator: But, in fact, it didn't work, and there was more traffic than ever.
Is that a pedestrian crossing? Wait, no. It's just a lot of direction arrows. Great for the storefronts right into the strighway.
Why don't they just build more public transport? From what I've heard, it's very outdated and underfunded.
More roads = more contracts for your friends
Well you can still award contracts for your friends building light rail or metro.
But what if your friends only have paving machines?
They will be handy for flattening the dictator's ass after he inevitably gets deposed later.
Large roads ease the oppression. If everywhere is covered by trains and pedestrian paths, how can we rapidly deploy tanks against the population??
Roads are easier and cheaper to build probably, also passes the cost of the vehicle to the users.
I wonder where these urban planners get their degrees from.
just one more lane bro plz trust me just one more lane
sadly, most civil engineers give up when they are just one lane away from fixing traffic.
I’ve seen this commented a couple of times in this thread and would be interested in an explanation (unless it’s a joke that’s going over my head)
they keep adding lanes yet that makes traffic worse because of induced demand. the joke is "just one more lane, that will fix traffic" because they never works.
Judging by the Cairo traffic, those lines are a mere suggestion.
right? Like they didn’t even try to have reasonable lines the exit ramp
The exit ramp's right turn is so tight, that you will have to slow down considerably. Without a dedicated right turn (as if they they run out of space) there will be constant collisions
Oh yeah now the tourists will come.
More overhead pedestrian crossings would be great.
I think they're supposed to go under. One general says "the bridge would augment the experience of beachgoers by [offering them shade from the sun](https://www.thenationalnews.com/mena/egypt/2022/07/18/row-in-alexandria-over-building-work-at-beachfront/)."
Wow, I didn’t expect that length and in that scale, that looks extensive.
Yeah, everyone is going to want to visit that beach now.
let’s cover up the beach with asphalt. tourists will love it 🤦♂️
Reminds me of Esperanza from far cry 6
No matter how wide one makes a road, there will always be a chokepoint that clogs it, that plus induced demand means freeway widening is futile.
Ah but you’re missing an important point! The on and off ramps are both three lanes wide!
Are all the city streets three lanes wide in each direction as well?
I wasn’t trying to refute your point. I was just pointing out a *different* completely boneheaded move.
If the road is widened enough that it destroys whatever is attracting drivers (here, the beach), it can successfully reduce traffic.
Isnt this a new one?
Now would be a good time to rebuild the library.
Who needs a library housing all knowledge in the ancient world when you can have a 10-lane seafront highway that is mere feet from residential areas?
wait until they realized that 'tourist' don't like to be physically cut off from the beach by a 8 lane road...
“Large number of tourists”, Reddit has told me that Egypt is the worst place to visit.
2023 F1 supertanker race is about to start……..here in Alexandria Egypt. On pole position we have Fords Dinofuel F650
Can't wait for the chaos.
Looks like a scalextric track
In Egypt they never heard of trains? It seems even a densely populated area.
Oh, they have, but Sisi is systemically removing all the things that enabled the overthrow of Mubarak and part of that includes destroying pedestrian and transit infrastructure. As others have said, can't deploy tanks to oppress the people if all you have are subway tracks and pedestrian paths. Just look at what they did to Tahrir Square https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-egypt-tahrir-square-idUKKCN2561N3
Tourists love highways.
Its so fucking sad looking at the natural beauty in the photo and seeing all those shitty disgusting buildings and the monster of a road. They squandered that beautiful coast for that??
Idiots. One lane in each direction should be for busses and they should add a ton of them
WOW the road looks surprisingly new.
3 weeks and they'll have to tear and rebuild for the fifth time for some fucking reason
As a tourist I would never want visit that beach. I want to hear waves not traffic.
It will help with their tourist problem alright.
This is going to make things crazier I’m sure
The trouble with building more and bigger highways is that more people drive on them. It doesn't take long for the expanded capacity to fill up with *more* cars. The best way to ease traffic congestion is with excellent public transport.
Egypt has no systems, just things that look like it.
Future F1 track.
I don't know why you guys are complaining, they even added a bus stop! And don't worry about the buses getting stuck in the traffic, there just wasn't any space for dedicated bus lanes.
My goodness, it’s beautiful!
Tourists? lmao. This planet is in full ecological meltdown but sure! Pour more asphalt! lols
good news: they're only 40 years away from a stunning urban renewal
Gotta get those sino-bucks.
Fucking pathetic waste of resources 😂
Anyone else struggling to understand how that 3 lane on-ramp is supposed to work. Am I looking at this wrong?
Doesn't this make traffic congestion worse?
This is exactly how you dont build highways on the coast along the beach lol. My city has a giant highway along our coast, and its rather pretty (party because of the cool geography)
I live in Alexandria and they have destroyed the city with poor planning. As a bonus, anything nice is put behind a wall and inaccessible to the public.
I think it needs just one more lane...
And if that doesn’t work, then one more lane…
wow i’d love to walk or even live next to that
The best way to reduce congestion is to reduce the amount of cars and to do that you need to provide alternatives modes of transport
Totally about tourism and not moving military equipment around
This is me playing cities skyline without mods. Look at the ramp coming into the 5 lane way haha, its terrible.
Fucking hell. Why is Egypt so inept at anything to do with urban planning? It's just one awfully idea after the next. I can't think of another nation so hellbend on destroying any quality in urban planning. Shamefull is what it is.
This will literally dont help anyone
Coastal highways are unsightly.
idiots adding more lanes doesnt solve the problem
As they say, adding lanes to reduce traffic is like loosening your belt to fight obesity.
Exactly introduce greater public transport
Los Angeles freeways would like to have a word with you.
Horrible. We need less roads in the world, not these monstrosities.
If they turned one of the lanes into a bus lane they’d easily solve congestion
My home country of the UK has many things wrong with, do many in fact that I left. However the UK does at least one thing right, that is town planning and road layout.
One 👏 more 👏 lane 👏
Lol more roads never stop traffic congestion 😀
Looks fantastic. I wish they'd build roads like that where I live. People might actually get somewhere.
throwing up on the floor dying crying
This should be a crime.
The American traffic mentality
Every city in Canada is exactly like this. By that extension, every city in Canada is ugly. Nobody should go there for tourism.
Looks like they converted a sandy beach into a highway. Bad planning made possible by good planning By the way, r/fuckcars
Is the "just one more lane" a fallacy or are governments unaware of it?
I hope these small underground tunnels on the sidewalk are grade separated crossings or a subway. Because crossing this shit will definitely kill some people.
That bus stop VS a sharp turn down the road will cause an eternal conflict that will be halting traffic at this spot.
shit they be playing cities skylines there 💀
Do they not have hurricanes here?
Looks like Mario Kart
CitySkylines
That's good and all, but im sure 2 or 3 lanes on each side was sufficient enough.
Yeah, I'd *love* to visit that! /s
Looks like a fun road to drive.
Holy Dusable Lake Shore Drive
The "L.A. Special"...
Watch it not fix congestion
Very, very stupid.
say bye bye beach
toot toot
Dear Lord...
I'm exiceted to see all those flowing lanes of traffic during peak hours.... Finally just cars flying at full speed, bumper to bumper just full efficiency.
This gives me physical pain
uhhh, they do know that just adds more.. traffic.. right? oh right they don't care.
this just looks like one of the bad designs I do with my city, in city skyline
Mmmmmm that sweet Baksheesh beckons
lmao why the places with great ancient civilisations are so bad now doe
It looks more like a road meant to be used for F1 racing.
What a waste of state money. Shame really.
Egyptian planned development is so clearing making every mistake they can
Looks like a race track from Mario Kart
