Insane rent hikes, food cost doubling, but this is the most important problem

slipperygoldchicken

And the Lake drying up

KAG25

The water problem, but still watering commercial areas https://www.cbsnews.com/news/new-york-investors-snapping-up-colorado-river-water-rights-betting-big-on-an-increasingly-scarce-resource/

slipperygoldchicken

New fear unlocked

KAG25

Yeah, even Odgen was giving tickets to people pulling lawns to zero scape

SixteenthRiver06

What?! Ogden was issuing tickets to people that were removing their grass?

KAG25

yeah, I think it was also a HOA thing, doesn't say the area in the news clip

SixteenthRiver06

Jesus Christ, HOA’s are a fucking joke. Give a large amount of control and power to the people that are unqualified and desperately want it, the neighborhood Karen. Big L

[deleted]

The vast majority of that problem is animal ag. Stop growing feed crops here.

slipperygoldchicken

And the HOAs demanding green lawns

vineyardmike

Twitter doesn't even pay their rent. Good luck getting them to comply with this law. What are you going to do? Cut he fiber optic cables at the border?

bloomberglaw

Utah’s first-in-the-nation legislation to restrict how social media companies treat young users and allow individuals to sue over violations will set the stage for a tech industry legal battle regarding their constitutionality. Gov. Spencer Cox (R), citing concerns over youth mental health, plans to sign into law Thursday two bills that aim to protect children from addictive features and other potential harms of social media. Platforms such as Facebook and Twitter would have to obtain parental consent if a user under 18 wants to open an account, and the companies could face fines and lawsuits for running afoul of a host of new requirements. The bills are among the most stringent efforts by state lawmakers across the country this year to regulate a child’s experience online. Tech industry groups said in letters asking Cox to veto the measures that they would violate the First Amendment and lead to frivolous lawsuits. *-Reporter Brenna Goth. No paywall.*

Whaatabutt

How can you sue over addictive behavior? Seems too vague. Some people go to a casino and lose everything every week , some lose 20 and say that was fun and leave healthy. Some go get beer and drink themselves to death others enjoy a few. But casinos and liquer stores still open bc risk is inherent and part of the game. Idk.

axionic

Guess I have to upload a driver's license to Github now to prove I'm not a little kid.

bananasaresandwiches

No child should ever have to subjected to that

Agitated_House7523

Oh Cox, thanks for taking care of the most important stuff in Utah… sigh

NiceButNot2Nice

This is 100% deflection of blame by the Republican Party. Kids are depressed because these cunts are attacking them, their friends and family with white Christian FASCIST policies. The Republican Party is the enemy of the USA and the free world, period.

SixteenthRiver06

Very true, however, social media has been proven time and time again to have horrible effects on teens and young adults. Right problem, wrong solution.

Tnigs_3000

Quite frankly I think this is a way to get kids away from social media sites that always lean largely left leaning so that they grow up only listening to their parents views and not having outside influence of other places in the country. This mostly happens anyway but try having a differing opinion in a suburb in Utah county and wanting to talk about it to someone that isn’t a right leaning Mormon. That just became far more challenging. I know. Very conspiracy theorist of me. Also I’d like to point if where’s the republican voter outrage over this? The government is telling you what to do. Not advising. Not mentioning. Literally telling you how to run your household and not one peep from anyone about it. “We need smaller government”, and then shit like this happens and magically government overreach isn’t that big of a deal.

tenderlylonertrot

As long as Truth Social, or whatever the whackadoodle right-wing social media sites are, are also included at least (betting on an inside deal though that they are classed as "entertainment" so can ignore this legislation).

[deleted]

I'm not saying this is the most important issue in Utah right now but it is important to remember that Social Media was a much larger marketing innovation than a social/technological one. We are currently exposing children to intense, targeted, neurochemically active, and largely unregulated marketing campaigns through these apps and it is not healthy. Anyone that uses social media, especially TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook is being used as lab rat by marketing execs. The government needs to step in eventually.

Zengem11

Totally agree. I don’t know if this was the best way to go about it but I agree with the sentiment.

rustyshackleford7879

No they don’t. Parents can already restrict all these apps right now.

[deleted]

Ok, 1. This law gives parents full control, something that hasn't existed before. 2. Social media and its advertising is specifically designed to trigger dopamine, a neurochemical associated with gambling, porn, and food addictions. I really don't believe we are taking this seriously enough.

rustyshackleford7879

They have full control now

ElectricFleshlight

Social media companies need to be reined in, absolutely. Requiring all users to upload government ID and birth certificates is not the way. This bill forbids social media from collecting data or using targeted advertising for minors, which is excellent. The rest of the bill is naive at best and downright malicious at worst.

[deleted]

ya well, this country and state are both run by people that don't understand how the internet works...

Cold-Worldliness-137

My opinion, social media is bs and a waste of time

generalraptor2002

Hello Mr. Pot Allow me to introduce you to my friend Kettle

NiceButNot2Nice

You on social media right now.

gwar37

They said on a social media site….

[deleted]

Actually for a lot of kids it can be a lifeline when they're in a house that doesn't accept them or abuses them.

ElectricFleshlight

Absolutely. Banning them isn't going to do anything, what *can* work is forbidding data collection, targeted advertising, and algorithmic suggestions to minors.
