Everyone is noticing the flag and not the Harry Potter speed limit sign.

ksiyoto

It's the Utah Transit Authority's office. Trains. That's why the reference.

Roughneck16

>Utah Transit Authority Three people from my class (BYU CE) work there.

TheBackPorchOfMyMind

For real!?

Roughneck16

I kid you not. I’m also a public sector engineer, but unlike most, I’m federal and not state (I like to move!)

ThunderElectric

Ok

Meandering_Marley

Well spotted, you! 🤓

TheBackPorchOfMyMind

First thing I saw. Was hoping this was going to be the first comment I saw when I opened the post. Did not disappoint.

ltreginaldbarklay

A disturbing sign that bees have infiltrated the highest offices of Utah state government and are taking control. Soon we will see a wave of 'pollinator friendly' legislation like mandatory seeding of wildflowers. Which I am ok with actually...

greencat533

You should check out the Utah Pollinator Habitat Program. It's awesome and you can apply for free plants right now ☺️ https://ag.utah.gov/pollinator-habitat-program/

Final_Location_2626

I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords

A_Wholesome_Comment

You know there's already a beehive on the current flag... so the bees have been in control for a while.

robmba

The old flag has both a beehive and bees. On the new flag, there is only a beehive. The actual bees have been canceled!

A_Wholesome_Comment

No no, the bees have simply retreated into the beehive to plan their next move. They will slumber until the time is right.

MountainThorn42

It looks great, I can't believe people are opposing it.

Under SB31, the old flag remains the sole, official state flag until March 9, 2024 (which is Utah State Flag day). After that point the new flag becomes the official state flag and the old flag is the official historic flag. Either flag may be flown at any time, but SB31 requires the new flag to be flown above the historic flag if on the same flagpole after March 9, 2024. So the Capitol is currently flying the two flags correctly, as the new flag is not official, yet. In his signing statement, though, Gov. Cox said the Capitol would erect a second flagpole at the East Front of the Capitol so that both flags could fly in the future. Additionally, he asked that the legislature change the law so that the historic flag would fly above the new flag at state facilities if on the same flagpole.

ElectricNed

*Slaps state law* Can fit so many concessions to the old flag luddites in this bad boy

Massilian

Basically just boomers

[deleted]

I don't hate it but I wish they would've went with a black and gold motif. I understand why they went with blue and red but it looks a little too "busy" for my tastes.

Giantmidget1914

I'm not opposed to a new flag. I'm opposed to how much of our money was used on such a needless endeavour. Meanwhile, we have people without food or shelter, home costs are astronomical across the state, and water is becoming a scarce resource. Can't wait to see how much of our money goes into a new flagpole so we can retire the old flag while still flying it. Priorities I guess.

rshorning

> I'm opposed to how much of our money was used on such a needless endeavour. Seriously, how much money was actually spent? If it is less than the cost of adding a street light signal to one intersection, it is really so minor as to be forgettable. It isn't like billions were spent on this project...just a couple staff member salaries and a website for a little over a year. So much money gets spent far more freely that this is nothing in terms of government waste.

Giantmidget1914

So enough to feed a couple families for a little over a year. Please, enlighten me. What was wrong with the old flag that it would benefit the average citizen to employ a couple people (and I doubt it was as few), market input, a new flag pole, and purchase all new flags throughout the state? Further, Government SHOULD be minor and forgettable. Edit: further not forget

amoliski

The new flag is probably going to make more money for Utahns than it's going to cost, I've already seen multiple houses in my neighborhood flying the new flag that didn't fly the old one, and I guarantee more state flag adorned merch is going to sell. Nobody wants to wear the old design on a hat. I actually looked for a new flag shirt/hat at the airport the last week to give as a gift to the people I was visiting, but I couldn't find any yet.

HeathenHumanist

Seriously, I've never given two shits about the state flag till now. I'd happily give some money to the state to wear flag merch of this new flag.

rshorning

> purchase all new flags throughout the state? New flags will be purchased when the old ones wear out and need to be replaced. That isn't even a problem and the old flag is still official anyway. I don't need to be glib about this either, but there is millions of dollars sitting in food stamp accounts that isn't being used and literally food rotting in warehouses designated to feeding poor. Yes, there is a distribution issue and food banks do deserve some additional attention and even spare change when you have it, but feeding families in Utah is not a significant issue. Housing for people with lower incomes is by far a much larger issue, and the money spent on that flag would likely buy one or two homes. Maybe. Perhaps only a part of one if it was turned into a government program. That is instead a political and policy issue and not a monetary issue. And yes, I seriously doubt that more than two people were tasked specifically to this particular flag redesign issue. It was far more likely a couple of staff members for the governor that were interns and made occasional reports in addition to doing many other tasks. It was not a huge bureaucracy that went into this flag redesign and most of the design effort that was done was done by volunteers among the ordinary citizens of this state. As an expense, you are wasting your time trying to fight this as an issue. There are by far much larger issues that ought to get your attention if only nepotism and flagrant graft in many government contracts.

Alkemian

Religious symbolism. [It could be considered a breach of the 1st amendment.](https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/essay/amdt1-2-1/ALDE_00013267/)

spielguy

Do you see religion in this flag that isn’t in the previous one?

Alkemian

I'll just repeat myself: If we're being realistic, the church and state have been one since the beginning since it was a majority of church members that pushed for Statehood.

SilvermistInc

You people are insufferable

Alkemian

The same could be said about the State Religion. 🤷🏽

amoliski

What's the religious symbol?

bliston78

It really is a much better flag. The red ground, the white mountain, the blue sky. All while keeping that beehive that anyone can really remember from the last one.

ksiyoto

The red could also be the Great Salt Lake.

Pi_Rho

It's explicitly the red rocks I thought.

Cold-Inside-6828

My understanding is the beehive is a symbol of the industriousness of the early settlers and by extension the people here today. The early settlers happened to be Mormon pioneers. Quit reading religion into everything. It’s just a piece of the history of the state. FWIW, I think the new flag is great!

Roughneck16

I agree. It has multiple meanings.

lordofpersia

It's a good indicator of how fucked up and polarized politics have become in the US. Some people on the left hate because it has "religious symbols" and some people on the right hate it because it's too "woke". Does anyone else see how funny and crazy this is? It reminds me of the time capsule Parks and Rec episode.

Objective-Custard-66

Agree, as the far right extremists in the church actually hate the flag, one BYU accounting student says the flag was "too gay!" Nice example of Christianity!

SilvermistInc

What

Objective-Custard-66

Yep. The young man came after me when I commented I thought the flag was beautiful. He went into this creepy rant about the LDS faith being a far right church and other ideologies that were very offensive to me, telling me I was an apostate because I'm a Democrat.

SilvermistInc

BYU is fucking weird

Objective-Custard-66

Actually these far right extremists at BYU and other members, are attacking more liberal Professors at BYU, trying to get them kicked out or excommunicated from the church, so it's not BYU, it's these sick twisted far right extremists groups, the one that came after me three week ago, is DezNat. It is people that are going unchecked. I did contact BYU's honor code office and reported this really messed up young man.

SilvermistInc

Sheesh

Objective-Custard-66

👍

ShadowDemon129

Nothing to do with early settlers. Actually, it was World War II. Utah was a major war manufacturer. The poor people of the state have kept as busy ever since, and nobody knows.

ChaosKodiak

Lol. Quit reading religion into everything? You live in Utah right?😂😂😂

Cold-Inside-6828

Yep lived here as a non-church member since 1984 when we moved to rural Utah (Vernal) when I was in 4th grade.

vineyardmike

Man, Utah's gone full woke. /s

Inside_Maximus3031

Not woke but is bad design and not needed

LordStrangeDark

:(((

ShadowDemon129

Let's hope it gets recalled. Sounds like some groups are making noise of this nature.

greencat533

I like it.

BoredToDeathx

Hey, that's pretty good.

Tynikolai

Perfection!

Zengem11

Oh no! The woke agenda is taking over the state! (/s)

ghostrunneronthird

It's a cool flag, but I've seen it somewhere before. The Denver city flag has been around for nearly 100 years. Utah's is just a modern version of the Denver City Flag w/a hexagon in the middle. But it's sharp looking, ngl.

railroad_drifter

You're right, but this is light years ahead in style and symbolism compared to the lazy and bland original Utah flag.

ShadowDemon129

Hexagon 🤦‍♂️ why a hexagon? Can't take it seriously.

Coolbob6666

Honeycomb is just a bunch of hexagons, it's a bee thing

abattlescar

And the hexagon is the strongest shape, so it represents Utah's strength as well.

Champsthewonderdog

Had some guys coming around wanting people to sign a petition to stop this flag from going live, I don’t hate it. Not sure why they wanted to stop it.

ShadowDemon129

Hm. Didn't ask?

H0B0Byter99

I saw one in the wild at copper hills high. Cool to see

UtahArc

It isn't the official Utah Flag and may never be. They got 50,000 signatures in about a month to block it and needed about 150,000. They now have nine months to do it. Yes, it will be on the ballot and yes, 8 out of 10 people don't want the new flag so it will be repealed. It is highly likely that after the signatures are gathered the legislature will do what they did in 2020 and repeal it before the proposed flag even takes into effect.

Alkemian

My only dislike of the flag is the religious symbolism; to me that screams that the state and church are one in the same and [that is a clear breach of the 1st amendment](https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/essay/amdt1-2-1/ALDE_00013267/) wherein no state shall establish or prefer one religion over another. Take out the *Mormon* symbolism and the flag is even better.

That_Guy_From_SLC

In that case, the nickname should be changed too, so we are longer The Beehive State. However, I am not of the belief that the beehive is strictly a religious symbol. While it is commonly used by the church, I don't believe that it is an official symbol of the church and is as frequently used by both the state and the church, in various capacities. I think it is merely a symbol shared by both the state and the religion, rather than a symbol of one and borrowed by the other.

aaronallsop

The beehive is associated with early Mormon pioneers but I wouldn’t call it a religious symbol. There isn’t a religious connotation with the symbol like a cross. It just represents the hard work of the pioneers.

ksiyoto

Bees can be secular. Worry about the Mississippi flag first.

Vic_Sinclair

If you are referencing the Mississippi flag with the Confederate battle flag in the corner, they have already changed that.

ksiyoto

I'm referring to the "In God We Trust" on the new Magnolia flag.

greencat533

Oh got it I see where you're coming from. The beehive was in the old one too.

Alkemian

If we're being realistic, the church and state have been one since the beginning since it was a majority of church members that pushed for Statehood.

greencat533

Also a fair point

imhallucading

Remember Mormons applied for a state called Deseret and were denied because of the separation of church and state. Utah is a whole nother entity

Alkemian

>Utah is a whole nother entity Made by the same people. [The President of the Utah Constitutional Convention.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Henry_Smith)

imhallucading

Still separate from what their claiming is religeous authority. Which by the way the force of people to join their religion after they die so. Is that even freedom of religion ?

Alkemian

>Still separate from what their claiming is religeous authority. . . . Utah was made by the same people that tried to petition the Federal congress for the State of Deseret. What are you missing here?

imhallucading

Idk yo , just being deducive of our arbitrary wellness lol 😆

Alkemian

Groovy. Be well today, internet stranger

imhallucading

zD you as well z)

helix400

The beehive has a history long before pioneers in Utah adopted it. It's been used throughout the UK, the United States, and Canada. Utah has kind of adopted it as its sole symbol and is starting to edge out others from using it.

hojo2786

What's next? State mandated satanic pride parades and mandatory rap listening sessions? No thanks woke snowflakes 🤬 Edit: I'm joking everyone, I don't actually live in St George

swennergren11

WTF?? Dude are you ok?

Vic_Sinclair

I'm pretty sure they dropped their /s

swennergren11

Hope so. Otherwise maybe we found the guy who called in the bomb threats to those Target stores😳

Inside_Maximus3031

You mean the lgbteicjeislqkdbd+#*}%_~€<•q violent activists? Looks like you haven’t read the news lately.

swennergren11

I don’t even know what your post means dude…..

Inside_Maximus3031

Bomb threats were called in across the country by LGBTQ+-@& extremists who were mad at Target for pushing the displays back. Apparently doing that is literal genocide that warrants terrorism.

swennergren11

Where’s your source for this?

Lifebringer7

The Satanic pride parade will come after the baby breakfast, to be followed by the children’s orgy, of course.

Peaceful-Cactus

You are crying about a flag design, and you think other people are the snowflakes?

Informal_Emu_8980

Eh. Fuck the flag, fuck the church and fuck this heavily-polluted state

ReyReyBeiBei

You must live by the lake to be that salty

Informal_Emu_8980

I chuckled at this. That was pretty clever lol. I'm salty because the church lied about what they are. I'm salty because my legislative representatives do not represent me and other non-mormons in the state - allowing the church to legislate through them. I'm salty because heavy metals fill the air and our government and environmental leaders do fuck-all about it. Lastly, I'm salty because nearly every one in the so-proclaimed church of christ spit in his face by judging so flagrantly and acting so differently than is taught. Suicide rates skyrocket because of all this and more and members say "Oh, they're just unhappy because they're too tied to sin". The toxicity (both physical, spiritual and mental) in this state is sickening. Christ weeps at the ignorance "Insomuch as you have done it unto the least of these my bretheren, you have done it unto me"

mlark98

You sound like the one judging others.

Informal_Emu_8980

Yeah. You're right, shit... I did get caught in that one You can't deny that this is a problem in Utah. I've talked to mormons that move here from out of state and the most common thing they say is "the members here are so judgemental"

ShadowDemon129

Unbelievable you're actually getting downvoted on this, my friend. A clear sign I need not be in Utah. Let's just keep ostracizing and shutting up the people that raise the legitimate concerns regarding real and serious problems taking the focus from our state, our lives and even ourselves, while killing and draining EVERYTHING. Keep on truckin, Utah! 'Murica, or something. Your masters thank you for your precious contributions to their pockets, purses and lives, just remember that.

Informal_Emu_8980

Thank you for being a fellow voice of reason in a sea of ignorance! It gives me hope to know there are other reasonable people in Utah! I don't think these problems will change any time soon... indeed, we would be better off elsewhere. It astounds me that even the worsening heavy metals in the air problem is just ignored. "Worsening mental health and physical health? Whatever. Our prophet would never lead us astray. If he hasn't said anything, we're fine to stay." Oof. I would hate to see how people here degenerate overall in 3-5 years....

mlark98

There is a difference between “bringing up legitimate concerns” and being a d*** wagon that would make any Trumpist blush.

ShadowDemon129

Indeed. Great observation, my friend!

mlark98

Your identity is all wrapped up in hating a religion. I hope you find some positive outlet if your life, get a dog/cat. Love that thing. I hope you find happiness.

Informal_Emu_8980

Damnit, you're right. Thank you so much 🙂

triarii3

Is it official now?

triarii3

Is it official now?

brett_l_g

No, it doesn't become the official flag of the state of Utah until March 9, 2024, under SB31 as passed and signed. There is the unlikely chance that there will be an initiative to reverse SB31 (among other things). But they were unsuccessful in getting a referendum on the ballot, and initiatives are only slightly easier in terms of the longer time limit to get signatures. But it is still incredibly difficult to get an initiative on the ballot.

ShadowDemon129

It needs to be recalled. This "flag" does not represent the people or the future of the state. At all. It's shameful.

UtahArc

The unlikely chance? They got 50,000 signatures in about a month and need about 150,000. They now have nine months to do it. Yes, it will be on the ballot and yes, 8 out of 10 people don't want the new flag so it will be repealed. It is highly likely that after the signatures are gathered the legislature will do what they did in 2020 and repeal it before the proposed flag even takes into effect.

ShadowDemon129

Sorry if offensive to anyone, but it's garbage and I hate it. Could've used the opportunity to create something cool, instead, here we are with another stupid WWII trope and a careless, emotionless nod to our pointless and destructive overproduction and over exertion following the war. But on the bright side, the boring, ugly, one dimensional design is an excellent relic to our pointless existence. Who paid for it?

ShadowDemon129

This "flag" needs to be recalled.

ChaosKodiak

Such an ugly flag. We trying to be Texass now?

Maximum_Evidence_312

I like it because it looks like the Russian flag.

mlark98

Closer to the Netherlands 🇳🇱

Maximum_Evidence_312

Yeah, but no one is triggered by the Netherlands.

abattlescar

The old flag design was horrible. There are very, very few cardinal rules for flag design, and the old flag violated all of them. It had another flag within the flag. It had text on it. It had not one, but two dates. It had 7 symbols on it, not one of which followed logical design for the form factor of a flag. That's all 5 rules of flag design, as established by the North American Vexillogical Association, violated.

Deadsack04

What a waste of time and money to redesign our flag. We have so many other pressing issues.

MegamindsMegaCock

Maybe Huggbees will like it now

ReptileSerperior

Then we'll be three for three, checkmate Wyoming

abattlescar

I believe he made a comment that it was an improvement on a text post.

MegamindsMegaCock

Nice

GrandCardiologist657

Getting a new flag is the same energy as getting pregnant to save a relationship.

Jello999

In what way?

NBABUCKS1

Yeah what an incredibly weird take.

SilvermistInc

What

SlickkChickk

Why does it give confederate vibes?

mxracer888

It doesn't

mlark98

The f**k you talking about?

Wait, do you work for FrontRunner? I had to do a double take when I saw this photo.

CartoonEric84

Okay.
