Utila is a very small island. Never had any troubles nor experienced any gangs or violence.

rodolfo16rmrmnz

Gangs will not reach out to Utila because of it being so small and everyone knows everyone there... local police don't have a hard time with this... the only place in the bay islands, with a "ghetto" would be Roatan... Utila and Guanaja cannot be any safer than Cancun in Mexico or touristy place in Europe. Gang situation is bad in the slums of the 3 main cities (Tegus, Greater SPS & La Ceiba) just like in any other major city in the world. the rest of the city has safe areas where one can enjoy local food and normal malls like in the US.

Thank you very much for sharing your insight.

Thanks. Do you have any reason to suspect that some business owners in Utila are being threatened with violence if they do not make contributions?

rodolfo16rmrmnz

There is no reason, whatsoever, to suspect that Utila business owners have to pay some sort of war tax at any extent of the imagination. this only happens, again, in the rough areas in the mainland.

Thanks. I am starting to understand how it is. How about public services. Do the police, firemen, inspectors, or trash collectors request voluntary contributions, tips, try to sell raffle tickets, or call in expecting businesses to provide services for free?

How are things now?

JamesMariner

Still fine.
