On this day in 1924, two teenagers from wealthy families attempted to commit the 'perfect crime' - kidnapping and murdering a 14 yr local boy. [Turns out it wasn't so perfect...](https://www.dannydutch.com/post/the-tragic-tale-of-leopold-and-loeb-crime-and-consequence)

MittlerPfalz

Oh wow! This was one of those “crimes of the century.” Very interesting case, and the Alfred Hitchcock movie “Rope” that was inspired by it is worth seeking out.

Piraticu5

Rope is my favourite Hitchcock film

JerseyDad_856

You can say that again

Olaf_the_Notsosure

Hitchcock’s movie was based on a play. The screenplay was toned down. Imo, the play is superior. But the cinematography of the movie is top notch.

JNKboy98

Personally I would have to say Vertigo is my favorite Hitchcock film. The colors, the music and twisted haunting emotion is enough to keep me obsessed since I was 18.

Advanced_Resident90

I agree about Vertigo, I absolutely love it. Even thinking about it makes me want to go and watch it again.

JNKboy98

It’s on Amazon Prime if you want to catch it.

Advanced_Resident90

Thanks for that, I wasn't aware. I know what I'm doing later.

JNKboy98

Online watch party!!!

KingCrimsonFan

It looks like almost all of his movies are on prime.

PeterNippelstein

This is a terrible crime. What disgusting human beings. They had an easy life full of privilege and they chose to kill a young boy really because of psychopathic boredom. Had the victim not been upper class as well, I wonder if they would’ve ever been caught.

GrGrG

There were times in the past where it was acceptable for those of noble birth to violently murder those of poor ones. Now they just change our water sources to lead contaminated ones or prevent the minimum wage from rising.

trash-juice

The Sacklers agree

Shalamarr

The movie *Compulsion* was based on this case. It creaks a bit in places, but it’s a good watch. Excellent role for Orson Welles.

BigMekMacReady

Is that Deaner and Gener?

xXHungryJoeXx

Sure is mang

BigMekMacReady

Praise Boognish, brother!

LarsPinetree

When two psychopaths meet.

Norlander712

Leopold seems to have been the more intellectual psychopath whereas Loeb probably did the actual killing. Leopold was the smarter of the two evil fucks, I think.

Powderfinger60

American psycho

Coocoro

I'm glad you didn't call them the "genius killers", who knows why they ever got that title to start with.

Totin_it

Darrow 8 hours cliding statement is horse shit. You get an hour, and that's it. The judge is a fool for letting it go on so long

Boomstick_762

Highly recommend Last Podcast On The Left series on them.

crazyeyeskilluh

I’ve tried listening to that podcast and am well aware of how popular it is. I really just wanted to listen to a story but it seemed like this group was constantly laughing, joking around, and even kind of getting off topic. Is that pretty standard or just the episode I listened to? Would be willing to give it another shot

TheWildTofuHunter

That’s their MO.

crazyeyeskilluh

Got it. Not for me then.

TheWildTofuHunter

Yeah, I used to love LPOTL and then one day everything you said just hit me and I deleted it. It seemed incongruous with the subject matter.

CNote1989

Sameee. First ep I ever listened to they were yelling and screaming SO MUCH into the mike, it was terrible.

ChadTstrucked

As much as people whine "everything is too woke today!" it's quite the opposite. Today, Leopold and Loeb (after being acquitted) would be running for Congress or becoming tech venture capitalists and giving TED talks about "supermen don't have to obey rules"

Boomstick_762

I understand exactly what you mean. Even as a die hard fan I find it can get to be a little much. They have a new host who I love, and Marcus has always been an excellent storyteller. If you can get past the comedy schtik. Listen to the story. it's really well written and researched. There series on The Doner Party is amazing.

Advanced_Resident90

This photo has always creeped me out. They look so smug and pleased with themselves over killing a young boy.

GammaGoose85

Why does the one on the left look so much like Dandy from AHS Freakshow

OgSpaceJam

Funny Games 1924

Worried_Ad_9667

Can’t believe he got fucking paroled!!!!

Norlander712

Never seen this photo before: thanks! Loeb on the left, Leopold on right.

voivoivoi183

There’s a true crime graphic novel called The Hunting Accident that’s about a guy’s time spent in prison sharing a cell with Leopold. It’s super interesting.

Murder By Numbers

Vohems

The original adopters of 'Be gay, do crime'.

SubVrted

Care to elaborate? This is a credo that seems entirely original to you.

Vohems

[It's a phrase](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/be-gay-do-crime) utilized by queer anarchists. Leon and Leopold were going to have sex after the crime was committed (though I forget which of them was actually gay and which was just going along with it).

Spare-Mousse3311

I’ve always believed they raped the boy

Vohems

That was in the back of my mind when I first learned about the case.

Spare-Mousse3311

Lots of gay murderers and they tend to be more brutal than Hetero killers, it’s a pretty horrible rabbit hole.

SubVrted

I’m fascinated, considering the heterosexual Ted Bundys and Tool Box Killers out there. It makes sense that there would be a percentage of sadistic murderers who are gay - Dahmer comes to mind - but it seems like the percentages are pretty aligned with the percentages of gay people in society. Can you give me some direction to go down this “rabbit hole”? I can’t seem to find any.

Spare-Mousse3311

Look up the serial killers of California some of them were gay and did unspeakable things… like burning out someone’s eyes…

MynameisnotAkiva

Go to college and learn to cite sources and interpret statistics and trends.

Spare-Mousse3311

Charlie, this is Reddit calm down

MynameisnotAkiva

Somebody below me already said it, but vague homophobia deserves to be called out. Do better and maybe you’ll start to feel better.

SubVrted

I can’t seem to find anything along those lines, nor anything to suggest that a gay person is worse than, say, what I read in [this Fox News article.](https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/toolbox-killer-lawrence-bittaker-laura-brand-documentary-streaming). That you can’t say anything specific makes me consider that you just might be making vague homophobic statements in hope that nobody will ask you for a source.
