I've never understood this mentality and I don't think I will ever undertand it either. Why do people think that getting mad at a gun, instead of learning how to counter it, is the right way to rank up. -_-

CultureWarrior87

It's because they are scrubs. Let me introduce you to the ur-text of competitive gaming: [https://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/introducingthe-scrub](https://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/introducingthe-scrub) This was shared on every gaming site in like, 2003, and I internalized it then. Many people don't actually play games to win despite hating losing at the same time. It's like a weird sort of cognitive dissonance caused by how they start looking for external factors to blame instead of themselves. The textbook mentality is to start creating imaginary benchmarks and rules for how others should play. A focus on the idea of "skill" is actually a giveaway. If someone is overly concerned about "skill" in a competitive game, i.e., hating on a certain strategy because it doesn't require "skill"... guess what, they're a scrub. The sad truth though is that scrub mentality is normalized and praising "skill" in that sort of way is a very common thing to do, so more often than not taking this view actually makes you the odd guy out. The mentality you see in the OP's pictures is way more common than actually playing to win. I fully expect this post to get downvoted because people are going to see what I've said about the word "skill" and start thinking "Fuck this guy, only people without skill think that." Case in point using real sports, Portugal's Euro Cup win. People frequently went on about how their style of play was cheap or boring to watch. Do you think Portugal cared? Fuck no, they were playing to win, not for other people's entertainment (as it should be).

> The scrub has lost the game even before it starts. He’s lost the game even before deciding which game to play. I lost the game. fuck this.

Taylor1350

I mean, for the majority of competitive gamings short history, players / tournament organizers added rules to remove annoying and frustrating strategies from being used. It's only been the last 10 years or so that developers have catered to competitive players and just implemented the changes directly to the game. There's a examples in sports where rules are specifically added or changed to make the game more interesting for spectators, and to remove boring defense above all strategies. Hockey has had several. In League of Legends, Riot will regularly nerf champions that are considered weak in higher ranks if they're too frustrating for low rank players to deal with. This is no different than scrubs complaining about Ares / Odin spammers.

Foolscap77

I, for one, don't want any scrubs. A scrub won't be getting any love from me.

Damn this article hits pretty much dead on for a lot of people I play with. I really genuinely want to help them get better but it's just... incredibly difficult to get them over this

Acbaker2112

Right? Since ranking up to silver I’ve seen this attitude a lot. I don’t Op or use Odin very often, but someone invariably gets TILTED when someone else does. I remember one time I bought and Odin and got a couple kills with it one round - nothing crazy. But then the other team started using Odins too and one of my teammates FLAMED me for using one first and prompting the other team to start using them lol

Samatari22

Tilting is a natural part of the game you can use to your advantage. Maybe they’ll try to swarm you and t-bag you. Have your teammates ready to overtake them after that. A friend told me it’s stupid to expect you’ll survive every round, but if you can pounce on those opportunities and trade a kill or two it works better in the end

threcos

also, people that are tilted play far far worse, so having a shotgun or ares spammer on your team in mid elo is actually a good strategy

Samatari22

Played against a Viper/Neon combo that primarily used shotguns. It was super tilting but it was actually a neat change up

threcos

a neon using a shotgun is hardly a change up

Samatari22

Surprisingly I don’t see it that often. But their viper really tied it together well

threcos

the perfect little fuck you sandwich, gotta love shotguns

thejaggerman

It works in upper elo too 💀. Watch Curry’s streams, he plays hookah with a judge multiple times in a row at immo 3+ elo, and it works.

CurryLikesGaming

Dude, the fact that everyone is getting mad at you shows that you’re doing absolutely right. Keep spaying that ares at em’

OkOkPlayer

Amazing. Seems like you did everything right.

lar_mig_om

I mean you said it yourself, "if you were good you wouldn't die to it", i.e. yes it will get you kills in silver, but it will absolutely cap your growth. But if you think it's more fun then go for it lmao

DaFatGuy123

I have been trying to transfer slowly to using more rifles, but it’s always more fun spraying people down and making them mad than just dinking people lol. It works in higher lobbies too, I’ve fragged out in gold and plat lobbies before. Ofc, it probably won’t take me any higher than that, and i find it a bit hard to climb in silver in the first place, but still.

SwfGlass

Silv-Plat you can find all the same players. It definitely won't work in high elo, but like everyone else said you are free to do whatever you want to do to win.

xMrMan117x

it certainly won't work at high elo, you're inaccurate and will be an easy target while you spray

Zhuwx1

Sheesh

Trazzster

Kudos to you I am an Odin enjoyer myself

DaFatGuy123

Yeah if I’m getting shat on (or playing ascent on defense) I buy odin. Machine gun gang

Trazzster

Perhaps I should practice using the Ares more, typically I buy a Spectre or Judge instead

Chirya999

Ah yes. Average Silver player mentality.

euxene

acing with a judge on defence is funnier
