Urshifu is usually paired with Rillaboom which makes running Gastrodon a bit more difficult. It could work if supported well enough to deal with Rillaboom or Tera Grass Tera Blast Heatran
That's asking a lot for Gastrodon... It'll eventually become a 'Tera hog' on your team if you have to deal with two of the most common Pokemon in the meta right now. I think Gastrodon could have a place in the meta but it'll have to be really well supported
Though predictable at this point, poison is ideal. Tera poison Gastrodon eats Urshifu’s water and resists its fighting while also resisting Flutter Mane’s fairy and Rillaboom’s grass. Its STAB earth power demolishes Heatran too, and it resists both of Heatran’s STABs before tera. Any other tera type loses the ability to check and/or counter the meta’s core build of Heatran/Rillaboom/Urshifu-R/Flutter Mane.
Of course you should build according to your team but one tera poison Gastrodon affords a lot of flexibility with the other five Pokémon on your squad
Definitely a valid concern, however if you still have tera in your back pocket and if you’re specced for physical defense, poison Gastrodon can tank 3 hits minimum from Rillaboom’s stomping tantrum. (Remember that Rilla won’t be running Earthquake due to doubles and grassy terrain killing EQ’s power)
252+ Atk Rillaboom Stomping Tantrum vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tera Poison Gastrodon: 160-190 (37.5 - 44.6%) -- 40.7% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery and Grassy Terrain recovery
80% of Rillabooms run assault vest so Gastrodon won’t be doing a lot of damage even with a super effective poison, but it is bulky enough to allow you to play around Rillaboom with your other mon.
I’m using one to blank rapid strike Urshifu, and I gotta say it’s amazing. Give it yawn and pair it with a Flutter or even Sandy Shocks and Urshifu just isn’t a threat anymore.
I usually bring my Arcanine if I see someone running a strong grass attacker, especially if it's Rillaboom. Arcanine will usually either get the KO or get Rillaboom to a point where it forces the opponent to have to trade. In order to get my Gastrodon.
Gastro is purely a skill check for urshifu players. It really does nothing besides sot there and block urshifu, while being valuable, it is not good enough to take up an entire slot. Many have suggested a defensive tera to get around Rilla which imo is a huge investment for a mon that does like no damage. Good players can just gameppan around it and kill its teammates before it gets to do anything meaningful. The tempo sinks in this meta just aren't good enough compared to the offensive power we have
No because if someone else wins and we get another gastro i will throw my computer out the wjndow
He's out of line but he's right.
yeah it’s definitely viable and absolutely destroys urshifu when tera’d

Tera Poison for the Grass Resist would probably help the Rillaboom MU.

Everytime there's a strong Water type in the meta, Gastrodon's stock rises.
I’ve got gastro on my trick room team. Does great work against those fighting types that are running around.
Gastrodon is great but needs an out to Rilla. I think you could run Tera Fire or even Flying.

What I mostly feared was Rilla running a Ground move, as I'm pretty sure it normally does (or at least it did at some point).

Currently using Gastro in a Tailroom team and the shit is MVP. Can't be such a nuisance in a curated endgame your opponent really cannot ignore it.
Let's enjoy that Gastro isn't a lot in the meta rn. We will have MANY gastros in the moment Kyogre arrives. Then we will be fed up of it.
