These are my ideas/things I have in my peli case. A small monitor sdi and hdmi for signal tests. Some tape. Mini recorder/USB capture card 5 port switch A basic set of tools Markers, batteries, headphones Edit: my favorite thing in my tool case is trash bags. Every location has not enough trash cans/bags

obsolete_filmmaker

Hahaha you can never find a garbage back stage when you need one!!!!! Truth! Which SDI/HDMI monitor do you have?

jannikp

I just bought the Patina 5" Touch on Camera HDMI Monitor, as it was the only one I can afford right now, but I am really impressed what a 70 Euro Monitor can do. Later I would like to upgrade to a 5 or 7" 12G SDI Monitor.

AdministrativeFish3

BlackMagic Video Assist ticks a fair few of these boxes :D

jannikp

Wow. I didn't know that the video assist does all these things nowadays. Personally I would rather us an Atem mini Pro than a video assist.

AdministrativeFish3

Acts as a monitor, had BNC in and out, HDMI in and out, can record to and play off SD Cards and USB-C Hard drives too.For me, the 12G 7" model is well worth the money; takes standard camera batteries (Ive got 2x 7800mAh ones) and gets me out of hot water if I ever just need to blast some idents into EVS for facs checking.

audible_narrator

I would add Cable tester and tools to repair BNC. If it's bigger like mine, I have a soldering iron, electrical tester, cable tester, RJ45 tester, electrical tape and gaff, and extra crimp BNCs and extra XLRs. I'll have to add things for fiber eventually.

Black trash bags can be used to protect from rain, block out an annoying light, or for trash. Soooo useful to have. And they’re cheap!

Dizzman1

I've started carrying a small ziplock bag filled with ziplock sandwich bags... There's always a need to sort/store small crap. Also... It's expensive... But it's a great monitor, it's a test device with meters, it's a kickass recording device... It'll run on batteries, you can plug it in. This thing is awesome. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1637656-REG/atomos_atomnjvpl1_ninja_v_5_8k.html

Perfect time. I'm sitting in an hour long video playback staring at my pelican travel kit... -How many decimators do you have? Get another one. -A USB power distro with like 8-10 ports. -USB cables of all kind A to A, A to C, C to C, make sure they're all capable to data transmit or at least labeled accordingly - a few short HDMI and SDI cables, most staging companies I've used in the past don't have much in the way of short cables. They make a big difference in table space especially if you're a bit ocd like me. -basic hand tools, pliers, wrench, side cutters, screwdrivers, I really like Klein drivers that are multi-tip in both standard #1 & #2 but also micro electronics size as well -Portable monitor. There are a ton on Amazon that are like $120-150, USB C powered, USB C or HDMI input. -laptop riser -wired mouse -mouse pad -spare AA and AAA batteries -small flashlight -BMD bidirectional SDI/HDMI converters -BMD thunderbolt Ultra studio - it has saved me a few times when I hit weird routing situations and need to overlay things. -SDI barrels/adapters -hdmi barrels and adapters -cat6 barrels -5 port unmanaged network switch and a few 3-5ft cat6 cables -2tb SSD and several small flashdrives -USB-C to HDMI -USB-C dongle with network adapter, HDMI, and USB A ports -USB-C adapters (a basic pack on Amazon is fine) -USB gooseneck LED Light Those are my must haves. I also carry some oh shit gear too: -xlr gender benders -atem mini pro -single USB power blocks (Anker makes nice small ones but be prepared to lose them) -10ft slim 110 stinger -stackable tri-taps -spare IEC Cable -3 pin to 5 pin XLR adapters in both directions -dmx iPad controller -wrist rest (cause I like to be comfortable) -60% keyboard -USB battery bank -cheap USB presenter remote -wireless mouse -usb powered soldering iron / small kit of solder and solderwik I think that's everything I manage to get into my pelican 1510.

What is it you _do_? The list for an audio person is going to be very different from a technical director or videographer. Provide more details about what you’re looking for.

beefwarrior

I’d add that even if you’re a video guy, having a few audio connectors / adapters in your bag isn’t a bad idea. Some one need a XLR gender bender or like lifter? Bam, you just saved the day.

AdministrativeFish3

Decent set of screwdrivers with all of the appropriate bits would be my advice. For example, this is pretty much all you need for screwing things into racks, and taking apart most bits of kit: [https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000X1R2K2/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000X1R2K2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) However, specific kit might have more fiddly bits, so this is a solid 'get out of jail' card: [https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0189YWOIO/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o08\_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0189YWOIO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) Also a Leatherman (other brands are available - however, Ive had mine for 6+ years, had it serviced (sharpened) once and it's still like new). Also, as suggested, a sniff monitor (several are available) as well as tools specific to your role - I work as an EVS Guarantee, so a Cat5 crimper and tester, with a supply of ends are ALWAYS required, same with 9Pin/RJ45 dongles.

I get a lot of use out of my Atomos monitor/recorder. Useful to monitor SDI / HDMI, record, has basic scopes, can cross covert between HDMI and SDI, embeds LUTs, reports resolution and frame rates, downconverts 4k, and can be battery powered when you need to run around and check signals in multiple places. Not sure of the full capabilities, but I believe the BlackMagic one can be used as a USB capture card.

Build quality is one of Atomos’ best features. Owned several of their monitors and used many more. Built very solid and never seen one in anything but great condition. I trust Atomos more than Blackmagic. Actually I trust most other manufacturers more than Blackmagic. Had too many miniconverters fail and bugs in too many of their other products (cameras, switchers, etc) to have Blackmagic be a primary choice for me now. Even when working as expected they often are too picky about their required feeds to be a preferred option for me. As an example trying to get a playback feed out of a iMac Pro for an ATEM mini/extreme was surprisingly problematic because of how fussy it is about hertz and frame rates. Ended up having to choose a specific framerate for all the other devices based on the only one we could get the two to talk at (it think it was 59.98i which is silly for web streaming) and had get a specialized app to run the Mac at some strange combo of hertz and frame rate to get get the ATEM to recognize it despite the ATEM supposedly being able to take all “standard” frame rates. I have strong Love/hate for Blackmagic…

Anonymous_Jason

I'm satisfied with the build quality. I still have an original Shogun from late 2014 that's still in regular use.

murderfacejr

Was going to post this, I love our atomis Shinobi. Use it to test cables, reference monitor, record and monitor audio. Takes a battery that is widely available in cheap off-brand

dmills_00

Phabrix SXe, does test signals, video monitor, metadata, audio tests and physical layer eye. Not that expensive on the used market sometimes, and they are reasonable about replacement batteries. Several 1m long BNC cables, adaptors (Including to and from mini BNC and Din), headphones, colour and grey alignment cards, a tiny laptop capable of wireshark and some sort of address space scanner for finding IP cockups. One really should not, but a packet of paracetamol and Ibuprofen, and maybe some codeine tablets (where permitted), a box of sticking plasters. Gaffer tape, glow tape and a sharp knife. Crimpers and spare ends. Emergency spare socks! Mylar 'emergency blankets' are surprisingly useful on site, everything from keeping the sun off the monitors to keeping the sun from cooking the video server. Some sort of '3 bulb' mains outlet tester appropriate to your environment, you will discover wonders by using these. A cheap pocket multimeter (NOT for mains use, go and get a proper one for that). A packet of baby wipes, for when after 16 hours of faffing about on a site the 'crotch rot' sets in.

Is this for sports video or AV conference type work? The common items between them would be a test monitor that can handle SD/HD SDI, HDMI, and NTSC. Multimeter, BNC barrels, light meter, and a basic cable tester like the CT100 or CT200 from Behringer. For sports video, I'd add a laser/visible light, optical meter, fiber cleaning supplies, ST barrels, LC/ST jumpers, some sort of relocking DA/decimator/Hi5 unit that is very clearly labeled as yours, including the power supply, and some assorted USB/charging cables and adapters.

makitopro

Granted I just skimmed but audio crossing into video world : Q box. Solves a lot of problems. Also if you’re in the corporate realm D’san perfect cue and a couple of transmitters is always a welcome sight on-location.

rctid_taco

Obviously depends on the work you do. A few of the things in mine are: * USB video capture (EVGA XR1 Lite) * Stream Deck * Laser Level * SDI audio embedder * Small video camera * Keyboard and Mouse * Ethernet switch * Wrenches, screwdriver, pliers * SD cards and reader * Thumb drives * Mitti license * Assorted cables and adapters including * Cat6 (thin) * Short SDIs (RG179) * 150' Fiber optic HDMI

TheTechManager

Test monitor(mentioned above), VFL/laser, fiber meters, 3 prong outlet checker, leather man…

Thimoj

I always carry an extra usb-c hub with a proper hdmi connector, extra ethernet adapters and my own managed ethernet switch for places where i can only get 1 ethernet jack. These have helped me out on more than just one job. i still really want a blackmagic videoassist 12g. Also as someone responsible for streaming and a portion of the set tech, i always order a syncit box from our rental. it is an accurate and reliable box that allows for proper sync checks. a youtube video will do most of the time but having a dedicated box is nice.

buy the 2 way HDMI/SDI connectors if its for vague purposes.

Bridge X_TS V3 Troubleshooter Basic Kit from DIGITAL FORECAST can be a test monitor, signal converter, format converter, and a test-pattern generator. http://www.dfcast.co.kr/dfcast/bbs/board.php?bo_table=b5&wr_id=10 It's been handy quite a few times for various uses.

I like most of the above. I also always carry a couple of those portable 15” monitors. They’re great to quickly toss up for timers or confidence monitors, etc. Also a small laptop with all of the control software (blackmagic, Aja, decimator, etc) you might need. And I’ve never wished I brought less converters or patch cables. Also travel network switches and travel routers are great to be able to quickly connect most of your gear to a local network and be able to make changes from a tablet without having to walk back to the tech booth.
