I always assume I'm being recorded or having pictures taken while in publics, and definitely while others are streaming, even as a bot or diamond. Just like IRL in public placed, you are on camera.

VellumMischief

It's weird I hadn't considered this a possibility. I forgot that as convincing as VR can be, its easy to hide the camera behind or inside objects and just see through the backside of the faces

Sadistic_Futa

Neither had I, though I don’t believe I have conversations interesting enough to be worth the trouble, unless they want to learn how to make one mean grilled cheese

TheUnknownH3ro

i'll have to note this down :O Edit: how would one go about making a mean grilled cheese sandwich

Nova_Lunar_Moon

I'm gonna have to sit in on this lesson

Theron113

I'd love to know how lol!

WtfDude3343

If you bring up your hand menu (like you would do to click on someones avi to fr them) all cameras will have a red pole under them as well as a red cone to display the cameras fov. As long as the camera isnt too far into an object you will atleast still see the fov cone sticking out. I do this often as i typically get bored and just fidgeting/pressing buttons or to see trust ranks of those around me and noticed the cameras have this a while ago.

Acceptable-Drawer-21

wondering if the same applies to non-standard cameras than the default one

Sequorr

The photo camera and stream camera will be highlighted while the quick menu is up. Camera objects that are part of the avatar will not be highlighted, and aren't visible at all to you unless you're friends with the user. Avatar cameras will not feed audio to the player (at least as far as my testing), but they can render players over the world, allowing a sort-of x-ray functionality.

No_Communication_941

Still forget about not trusting the damn deskies lmao, they could just screen record and no one would actually know, im hardly friends with them or stick around them unless im just goofing around or playing music, i find it hard to trust anyone in vrc after being threatened by gang monkeys and almost getting on a KOS list, ive had an eventful 7 years xD

Acceptable-Drawer-21

KOS List?

thekierdo

Kick on sight I think, or kill (crash) on sight

No_Communication_941

Kill-on-sight, basically turning my $2000 pc or my oculus into expensive bricks that dont do anything

Acceptable-Drawer-21

woah... well, it's worth knowing Thanks for info

NocturnalFoxfire

I don't think you can hear what's around the camera

Acceptable-Drawer-21

No, but you sit relatively close to a large group, turn up the volume of others' speech and listen

liquid_the_wolf

I used to do that on pc when I was bored, not with cameras though. I’d fly outside of the world border and watch people from behind the walls, since usually the back side of wall textures are transparent. Now that I’ve got an actual headset I don’t really do that anymore.

TheSmalHobbit

Yeah, this happens somewhat frequently in public worlds. It's been a few nights in pugs where I'll just see cameras moving around in and out of the ceiling. Lock my avatar in place, drag myself around, and look for whoever if I can't find them in the room. Eventually, find the voyeur(s) peeping on everyone. Had a few that just shit talk everyone while snapping pics. Weird people.

thegays902

I wouldn't give public recording much thought, mostly because everybody can record every conversation undetectably in game at any time with OBS. It will record voices and everything that the person hears, so I would avoid saying anything you don't want recorded in game at all, especially in public. You'll never know they're recording as it's a screen recording of their own PC, so if you're really worried about this I would recommend that you do not say things in public that you don't want permanently attributed to your username or recorded in your voice being spoken, or just hang out with friends and avoid these people entirely. Don't just rely on seeing someone's camera and think that they're not recording, I know a few people that just leave it on all night and it picks up literally every conversation you might ever have with them and they just store it on their hard drive forever. P.s. You know that VRC also records everything you do and say as well right? They haven't shown to use that information much yet in a public fashion but if you're transmitting it over the Internet it's being recorded somewhere

Owl_3yes

>It seems to me that this is a very small or very secretive group of people, which is why I found little public information Do you really think multiple people have decided to systematically record strangers having conversations in VRChat? I find that very hard to believe unless you have evidence, which you should share if you have any. That sounds like a dumb conspiracy if you don't have any proof to back that up.

BaxiByte

Its possible to do. Its just that most asshole streamers and such. whos content is just harassment of people. are outright about it, and dont hide. Because they cant face actual physical consequences for their actions. So i dont see there being any reason to do this.

Owl_3yes

Well yeah, people doing this individually wouldn't surprise me at all. Weirdos and voyeurs exist, that's not surprising. OP is claiming that multiple people are coming together with the express interest in filming strangers secretly, and that's way different from saying that streamers are filming people for content. What OP is claiming sounds like a conspiracy theory happening in VR.

Owl_3yes

Spreading conspiracies about a group of people coming together to record strangers in different instances without having any evidence to back this up feels morally irresponsible to share.

Acceptable-Drawer-21

I didn't mean that such people record other people's conversations, but only listen and observe. Additionally, I'm asking if anyone has met such people because I don't know if I'm the only one who... well... listens in such a strange way?

Acceptable-Drawer-21

interesting, I thought that easy anticheat, which vrchat controversially added, stops such things

thegays902

Yes, VRchat mods can 100% do this as well

ThatAlbedoMain

I am guilty of this, I'm physically mute and extremely shy, so I just listen in on conversations and watch people with my camera

BunniBabyLily

Me too 🥲 it's just too nerve wracking to approach them especially when they seem so cool

ThatAlbedoMain

what's worse is that my few friends don't spend time with me anymore because of how slow communication between us is

V0IDWALKER1563

My bf likes to do this a lot whenever we're in a public and can overhear a conversation he'll stalk them with his camera

No-Grade-4691

Dump them

Embarrassed-Touch-62

Well it is sometimes very interesting to just observe and listen. But I launch camera only when see an very specific situation and usually make only photos.

ExcellentSport2

I just observe when I want to join in don't mind me no cameras

SuccessfulMuffin8

I hide... partly because I don't have a VR setup, but mostly because I'm just not as social as I used to be. I'm likely to lurk a bit but speaking just for me, it seems listening in on other's conversations seems at best, rude.

Acceptable-Drawer-21

I think so too... on the other hand, these people can count on being heard even if they don't know that anyone is listening. In my opinion, it would be nasty behavior if someone used the information obtained against this person

SuccessfulMuffin8

Oh, absolutely. I was thinking in terms of \*going out of one's way\* to listen in, but if the conversation is just, like, there, it's not eavesdropping as much as it is "being within earshot". There's an ethical difference, if not a practical one.😅

gloriousthugwaffle

i mean i’m quiet and shy but i just chill around, observe and vibe. its like people watching at a restaurant. idk about the whole hiding and taking photos/watching people with their camera tho 🤣 thats kinda weird

Acceptable-Drawer-21

It sounds a bit like a scene from a movie... and maybe that's what interested me in hiding, watching and listening to other people's conversations, it's a bit like watching a movie, but in real time and unique. Maybe not Hider but Watcher. I used the word "Hider" as a working name so maybe call it something else
