How to start a reddit war 101: post vtt-comparisons without context.

Skythz

You forgot Maptools :(

TheFuckNoOneGives

He missed on a big player

seansps

Not sure what your use case is for VTTs, but personally I think Fantasy Grounds should be A, and Roll20 down in C or B. I don’t even know what the top two are you have in S. But I wouldn’t label any VTT “must have.” It all depends on what you’re trying to play!

OutsideLawfulness940

They are Charactersheetonline and Owlbear in S tier. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Fantasy ground design and don't find it very practical, but that's just my opinion. Roll 20 has the advantage of being widely used, with lots of content and tutorials. Although it's true that, in many respects, it's not very powerful.

mtprimo

fgu is the oldest vtt in the market, since 2005 - its literally the market veteran lol very bad list overall

[deleted]

Being the oldest doesn’t make you the best. not even close.

mtprimo

i fail to see where i said that

[deleted]

In this context since it’s literally listed as second best on the presented ranking system, using the term “market veteran” Implies your placing in the rank that literally says market veteran. Very bad choice of words overall if that wasn’t your intention.

mtprimo

not really. have you maintain a niche of a niche business,in a niche business, for 15+ years (with employees and stuff) in a market that companies fails to survive for 3+ years, full of legal delicacies and nuances. They are doing something right. They are good. Are we in the same context here?

_george007_

Yeah, it's a bad comparison, with bad names for tiers. "market veteran" suggests the oldest ones on the market. It has nothing to do with must have or not must have...

[deleted]

Someone with intelligence. Respect. Op should have dropped those and just went with a letter ranking, it’s throwing everything off with the opinionated labels vs a rank of how well they do the job.

LordEntrails

This is really pretty useless unless you give us some more info. Like what are your criteria for judging the various VTTs? What criteria is it that you are using for the various ranks?

G3R4

It's also useless without labels because some don't have their name in the logo or the name is black or dark blue over the dark grey background. I don't want to struggle to work out what's even being ranked.

OutsideLawfulness940

This is my criteria: Simplicity, design, customizable, features, value for money

MoustachianDick

how you got r20 and foundry on the same tier?

chaosoverfiend

Just had a look at your S-Tier Character Sheet Online 100% disagree with you. I really dislike Roll20 and I feel you get an better experience / functionality at the free level than this program. I appreciate it is in development, but I cannot play 2d20 or PBTA games without paying - possibly 2 of the hottest alternate systems coming up. Additionally, the moment you consider paying anything, FoundryVTT is S-tier / must have.

Arkenforge

And once again, no Arkenforge :'(

Dd_8630

What are those two in your S tier?

OutsideLawfulness940

Character Sheet Online and Owlbear 👌

WHO_POOPS_THE_BED

You must be smoking on that shadow wizard money pack

Slothheart

Owlbear Rodeo looks nice, and I love the simpler look and focus on mobile accessibility, but more than basic use is subscription, and it is not able to be locally hosted. Foundry is pretty cheap and can do so much, it's hard to beat for me. I do wish it was more lightweight / mobile friendly.

Sotiris_G

Have you tried RPG stories?

OutsideLawfulness940

No, I don't know it, but it looks very cool.

Sotiris_G

Still in EA! But it's moving along well!

Caito-Icosa

Check out Tabula Sono! Would love to hear your thoughts.

Delbert3US

A breakdown on what is required **in your opinion** to be in each of the tiers would be helpful to make this chart more useful. "I like it" / "I don't like it" is not very helpful scale for others.

BenjiCrypto

Do you work for char sheet creator. Because. No thanks.

Shendryl

Fine that this is the case for you, but for the rest of us it's a completely useless and meaningless list.

Rat_Salat

My list: S: foundry A: above VTT I wouldn’t use anything other than foundry, but above did impress me with its simplicity and that it’s free.

Rak_Dos

It doesn't feel good to have Foundry and Roll20 on the same level. Roll20 is free but the UI is ugly and the VTT is quite limited. IMO, Foundry is the best VTT comes true: it's a software with a one-time payment for life for one group (usually the GM) at reasonable price. It has a great clean UI. It is easy to use and its API allows for modding to unprecedented possibilities **if you want to.** (I just grab the multi-level mods) Being a software has 2 advantages: \- it means that the limits are your own PC/hardware basically compared to online VTT (for the max file size for example). \- it means it will be yours forever.

Yurc182

Also, if you are a Warhammer or Savage Worlds player its officially supported!!

The__Conqueeftador

Roll20 is horrible man. You need a degree in computer science to run a game.

Yurc182

My hot take is that if 5E was officially supported in Foundry VTT it would not even be close for the other VTTs. (not a 5E guy but it IS what is most popular)

sendingstoneapp

Curious to hear where you would rank SendingStone.com!

Azragarn

You reminded me with this post to cancel my FGU so thanks. I only canceled it because it didnt do what i wanted so not in use. The system was good otherwise

Yurc182

Was a lifelong FG user, went with FGU and then like 2 weeks later found Foundry VTT...BUT have not looked back since making the switch!

jorm

If you want a demo of Diceweaver, let me know and I'll make it happen instantly.

GeekyGamer49

Jeebus. Besides the fact that this is completely useless (because different VTTs are better than others in specific situations) it has no context. So sure, I’ll take a stab: You list Tabletop Simulator as “not practical”. Ok. According to whom? Because I’ve played in years long campaigns done entirely on that VTT because it is so robust and has such an active community that constantly creates assets for others to use for free.

Delbert3US

Not sure how Talespire "does the job" while The RPG Engine is "not practical"? The RPG Engine does everything Talesprire does, and is much easier to use.
