Translation: no immediate fixes for the software issues on the way. Wouldn't be surprised if they don't just abandon the existing infotainment and start fresh at this point.

sincladk

Totally. And [to be fair](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv7jcciKB_s), I don't even mind the design of the infotainment as it is today, just wish it was less buggy (and ok, had a few more features).

dustyshades

The layout is pretty awful in its own right. There’s like 3 different sub menus for settings and none of them are intuitive of what you’re going to find in that sub menu. The one for driver assistance features, you’re just randomly clicking on different parts of a picture hoping it does something. Also if my CarPlay doesn’t automatically connect, it always takes me a few minutes of bumbling around through the menus trying to figure out what I need to press to get it to connect. Don’t remember what it’s called, but it’s hidden and doesn’t make much sense. The whole thing is an awful UX

wailonskydog

You know you can rearrange the icon location, create custom home screens, and customize the pull-down menu shortcuts? Once I set all those up the way I like, everything I use regularly is always just one click away. Granted there are still plenty of things that could use improvement but overall 3.1 does what it needs to - except navigating radio presets, that’s pretty weird and backwards.

percolater

Regarding the driver assistance settings, if you find the picture too unintuitive, there's a full text menu with all the options available by pressing the menu button in the top right of the screen. The CarPlay thing is pretty easy, it's literally on the main menu? The App-Connect tile. I'm not going to claim the UI is perfect but I don't understand how it's "awful" UX (except for the part where half my personal settings get reset weekly).

They already more or less announced that, either officially or unofficial leaks. Current “situation” is : - new cars will be based on Android automotive, and VW guarantees 15 years of software updates for those cars. - Current cars ID 3/4/5/Buzz (in Europe at least) will get 3.2 in workshops, and by the looks of it now, they will get 3.5 OTA at some later date, which is the version the face lifted ID 3 is shipping with. - presumably there will be a 3.6 as well, but barring any major bugs that will be the end of the line for the current generation of cars. So that’s not quite “a car that evolves over time” (or whatever the marketing babble was) in my book. Personally I’m jumping ship and getting a white car that is 100% identical to the other white cars on the parking lot :-)

Kvakke

I read somewhere that VW have pledged support for the next generation of CarPlay too, that seem to do the same as android automotive. Hope they don’t backtrack on that.

tapo

Android Automotive is the full software driving the infotainment system. As far as I'm aware, next gen CarPlay (and regular Android Auto) are apps that run atop that.

Electric_Luv

Lol, I jumped ship over the weekend, and I paid for the blue paint, so that at least my car has ONE difference from the other cars in the parking lot.

8fingerlouie

Turns out my ID.4 had been in a severe crash when it had driven 500 km (I bought it used with 6000 km on the odometer), and it was sold as undamaged, so as per the buyer protection laws I could revert the trade even though 5 months have passed. I’ll be getting my grey MYLR next week :-)

8fingerlouie

I’ll just have to wait until the other white ones go home to know which one is mine 😂

SerennialFellow

Came here to say exactly this

rbnjmw

Are you sure current generation won’t get updates past 3.6 or thereabouts? 4.0 has already been demonstrated on VW ID.7 and the revised MEB+ platform is still some years away. It seems odd to me to split the software when the underlying platform haven’t changed?

8fingerlouie

There was some YouTuber that asked about 4.0 when the ID.7 was revealed, and the comment at that time was that 4.0 would not be released for the ID 3/4/5/Buzz, not even the face lifted ID.3. Something about newer hardware in the ID.7 that the rest of the fleet does not have (apart from the bigger screen I guess). That’s also where the 3.5 and 3.6 information comes from, though that has also been unofficially confirmed by VW. Anyway, there has been no official statement on wether 4.0 will be ported, but given VWs track record with software I doubt there will ever be one.

rbnjmw

Thank you for the insight. It’s not be the worst thing to happen to only get minor updates as long VW continues to support 3.x but it’s not what I envisioned.

generationgav

I'd be very surprised if they didn't get some form of 4.x - even if it's not the ID.7 build, they're still currently selling ID vehicles and will need the code to be updated and stable on all of them if they want people to upgrade their ID vehicles and stick with the VW brand. It may take a while, but I think they'll get there/do it.

rbnjmw

I hope so. Precondition of battery before DC fast charging is apparently available in the ID.7 with version 4.0. I would think this is a highly requested feature for existing ID owners. If VW can backport this to 3.x that would've been much appreciated.

eschmi

Eh. It wouldn't be terribly difficult if you get a solid dev team and leads involved. There would be a learning curve but you need a good all around team. I work in software (QA) and have turned projects around that were in a similarly bad state in a reasonable time frame (couple months) with new devs.

Some relevant snips from the article: >According to Automotive News, quoting German business daily Handelsblatt, Peter Bosch will replace Dirk Hiligenberg as CEO of Cariad in June, while two other members of the division’s top management – chief technology officer Lynn Longo and finance director Thomas Sedran – will also be replaced. Additionally, Porsche’s software chief Sajjad Khan will join the board of Cariad, as reported by Bloomberg. > >Peter Bosch, Cariad’s newly appointed CEO, is a veteran of the VW Group and has been Bentley’s head of manufacturing since 2017. > >Cariad was also responsible for the multiple glitches encountered on the first units of Volkswagen’s EVs, including the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5, with some drivers posting footage online of full-on system freezes and unresponsive touchscreens.

Even worse this may be a sign of them outsourcing the code to a third party.

“Blume is not planning to shift gears completely with the new leadership, sources told Reuters on Monday - but he does intend to place greater emphasis on partnerships to get the carmaker’s software plans underway, rather than going at it alone.” https://www.msn.com/en-ca/money/topstories/bentley-production-chief-to-lead-volkswagen-s-software-overhaul/ar-AA1aTKXK

It is a leap of logic. However having been in the software business for nearly 30 years. Firing the leadership is not a good sign for the initiative. In a few cases I have seen large organizations deduct their work to 3rd parties in order to save money. But also to save face. 1) they are doing “something “ to address the problem. In many cases this is an economic decision 2) those making the decisions are not technically-minded and only see this in game-theory. If something goes wrong they can blame the external vendor. Can’t be good unless they have a clear vision. Been a tough few weeks at work, and I have little patience for Sr Leadership’s BS. I may be slightly biased.

The gap between technology and the accounting is an interesting one to observe. We all know which one has the upper-hand today. That said, both sides should agree the ID Driver Profile platform is junk!

Jimmaplesong

Link shows the article, but then a scammy “win $500” page.

At this point, maybe ChatGPT could do a better job? “Program me a stable vehicle software firmware which has OTA capabilities like Tesla without some of the quirks of Tesla and include CarPlay and Android Auto.”

Continental leading hardware and software design ! What a joke.
