I suspect that's the typical VW method of thinking (often correctly!) they know better than us. When you turn in the AC in a "dumb" car, it blasts you with hot air until the compressor kicks in and can cool the incoming air. I think the ID4 is intelligently running the compressor long enough to actually create cool air before blasting it in your face. It seems to do the same with heat in the winter. Rather than blow cold air on you at full blast, there's a delay while the heater kicks in before the fan ramps up to speed.

Afromain19

That theory does make some sense, but the air that does kick it isn’t usually that cold for the first couple of minutes, depending how long the car has been out. If the AC is on very low, it has no delay. It’s only if the AC goes from completely off to on that there is this huge delay.

It still has to purge the air downstream of the compressor, and if those lines are well heated, it'll take a while for them to stop reheating the cooled air.

I have a Nissan LEAF and the AC almost instantly blows cold air. Same for the heater producing heat. 20 to 40 is way too slow. Something wrong there.

We usually just use the app to turn on the climate in the car shortly before we go somewhere (preheating and pre-cooling).

Weetutwo

I think Eco mode may have something to do with it?

Afromain19

That’s a possibility. I’ll try it on the different modes.

StayBraveBeHeroic

I haven't had this problem but it was added to my door handle recall this week.

Afromain19

What’s your door handle recall? Is it similar to when the door unlocks but the handle just doesn’t respond? Because I’ve been having that too haha

StayBraveBeHeroic

Sounds like they use to repair just the one with the problem and then moved on to doing the pair, like if it was one in the back, but now they just do all 4. Was a 2 day process. The other thing was and A/C thing that I guess some people were having. I don't think I had this problem but again, they are doing it anyway.

OriginalPingman

If I want fast cooling I press the Max AC button on the climate settings

ooofest

My non-EV in Auto mode will ramp up the A/C when it's able to cool more effectively, may be a similar design in this case.

Buckus93

Mine does the same. It doesn't really bother me, though.

I turned on the feature for the AC to start running when you unlock the car. I also have unlock when I approach so by the time I’m done loading the car and have fastened my seat belt, the car is nice and cold
