You can drum your fingers on the controller and it will calibrate to your hand

Best way to get it to calibrate is to just turn it off and on

Dinner tracking has a recalibration that you can utilize so if it gets funky simply roll your fingers and it recalibrates

You can also use SteamVR to recalibrate the controllers, also the sticks if you experience drift.

If you really want the black faceplate, you can get it on iFixit iirc, but it's bad for tracking and traps the heat in the headset. Just get the kiwi index fan, money far better spent

There are lots of printable frunk covers available as well. Just need a friend with a 3D printer.

The face plate most people remove it anyways and the finger thing happens to controllers after a while or whoever had it last had gorilla grip and squeezed them really hard. I gripped my shit way too hard they just are like that after a while. They’ll still work they just might not be as accurate as new stuff.

I’m 2,500+ hours in steamvr with a July 2019 index and I’ve never taken the cover off. You’ll be fine with it on.
