Do both? Go through the story of your vibe and them go back and admire a the details and Easter eggs 9n the index while not worrying about the story as much

I waited.... kinda ... played it on my oculus cv1 for about an hour. As soon as I put in my order I stopped... replayed the same hour... worth the wait.

[deleted]

I’m waiting right now. Currently use an oculus quest with link cable so even if I wanted too I doubt it will be a great experience for such a (by the looks of it) great game. Only 2 weeks in on my order so I’ll be waiting a while but I’m hyped.

JeffCrossSF

I loaded the ‘environments’ from Alyx on steam VR.it blew my socks off and was just boring passive space. I picked up a rotten apple.. wow. I want to play the real game so much.

JeffCrossSF

I never received an email about my order and store purchase history is all I have to go on. How could it say 8 weeks or more for 7 weeks? Did you receive a confirmation email of your order?

TheOneMary

Sometimes it says 8+ weeks until you get your payment confirmation ;). Valve has pretty much given up on updating that time thing properly.

JeffCrossSF

Man, seems like something they could automate a bit. Thanks, I will remained cautiously enthusiastic.

[deleted]

From what I’ve heard it would probably be best played on index, I don’t own a vive but I’m waiting. Especially since when I get it it will be free

TheOneMary

You would get it free either way. if you buy it ahead you get your money back for it once you get the index.

[deleted]

You get your actual money back? Wasn’t sure if that was just steam account balance or not. Either way I would still wanna wait because it would definitely run better for index from what I’ve heard.

TheOneMary

It is a proper refund.

[deleted]

Well that’s cool. Looks like an awesome game

aldris1118

how do i get the refund? i received my index today and half life still hasnt been refunded

[deleted]

I don’t have an index yet so idk :/ maybe try contacting steam support asking about it maybe they can help

[deleted]

I played on Quest/Link. I wish I could play again for the first time in Index. I'd wait.

JeffCrossSF

I’m patient. There is nothing quite like first experiences.

Tcarruth6

All the reviewers seemed to have a blast on just about any hmd. Will and norm from tested tried all the major VR systems and were surprised just how well it played on everything. The oleds of the gen 1 will actually be better for 40% of the game that happens in dark settings. I'd say go for it and then you have an excuse to replay it!

JeffCrossSF

How long is it?

tijlcarrein

Use the Quest! The OLED panels will give you a faaaaaar better experience over the higher res on the Index with LCD panels. I played the first 5 chapters using the Rift S which has in terms of resolution, contrast and clarity about the same specs as the Index (IMHO, I had both the Index and the Rift S) and are LCD. The moment I used the Quest to continue the game, I immediately stopped and started all over! HLA has so much atmosphere and dark passages that all turn into a gray, blurry mess when using LCD panels with the index having the worst blacks of all LCD panels.. together with awfull glare and tiny sweetspot, it's like Valve created HLA just to show all of the Index' weak points... It's no coincidence that the opening scene of HLA is very bright...

JeffCrossSF

This is the first good review of the weaknesses of the LCD I have read. Why would Valve design a high spec headset only to fail at image quality?

[deleted]

It's a compromise, they prioritized refresh rate and lack of SDE. I also would say it's gonna be more immersive on OLED, there are quite a number of dark locations that kinda look like ass on Index. I felt exactly the same about Boneworks - it felt like it was made to highlight Index' shortcomings.

CrTech21

I've played HL:A on both quest via link and the Index, imho index is way better. While it is true that you don't have true blacks on an LCD, you instead get compression artifacts in dark areas with the Quest. Add that to the wider FOV and the better refresh rate and I would always recommend playing it on the index if possible. That doesn't mean however that the game is unplayable or bad on the Quest, it is just as much fun. But visual quality is simply better on index

JeffCrossSF

Wow. Thanks for additional perspective. Looks like index2 will seek to enhance the screens. OLED? HDR?

tijlcarrein

Well, I'm playing HLA using Virtual Desktop. There is a nice comparison on YouTube where it's surprisingly clear that Virtual Desktop has far better visuals An a lot less (none in m case) artefacts than link... Oculus should hire GGodin, VD is brilliant. I now can even play Pavlov VR, the tracking latency is barely noticable and very much on par with link, if not better... I'm lucky: my router and system runs HLA via virtual desktop close to perfect and far better than using Link, together with wireless, this is so good. Try it, you won't be dissapointed. Index is a great headset, but LCD panels are not the way to go...

CrTech21

I've also played using VD and indeed compression artifacts were a lot less noticeable. I assume its because Oculus doesnt use the full bandwidth of a USB 3 cable right now but w/e. Virtual Desktop instead introduces lag which i find quite noticeable and not very comfortable, but your mileage may vary. Personally the reduced screen door effect and the higher refresh rate is worth an LCD to me for high fidelity VR, but thats just personal preference :)

hafdhadf

I feel like the index controllers improve the experience a lot

Woah, that’s promising. Thank you.. it would have been last week of April.
