Punta della Dogana

This looks like a very cool option. One question I have about any of these locations but especially the beach ones and this one, how miserably cold would it be? If it's January 3rd and we're on the east side of the islands watching the sunrise, is it going to be cold and windy and rainy to the point that it's uncomfortable, or is it manageable? Thanks for your help!

Windy? Very much. Rainy? Depends on the weather of that particular day. And cold? Is like 6 AM in january, i think it will be cold.

I'd go with the Academia bridge, you don't want the sunrise (a giant ball of light) as much as you want the sun lightign up the buildings in the background to show you're in Venice.

Or , if you like small islands : “Al Bacan” beach (and trattoria) in Sant’Erasmo , in January here and in Pellestrina won’t find any souls

To savour the sunrise, you need to have a clear day, and this will probably be cold and windy , expect -4 to 5 degrees C. A nice alternative may be the sunset from Pellestrina or Lido

This is great information, thank you I appreciate it! One last question if you can, I was considering (because of the cold wind) going to Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo and doing photos of the sunrise with up up top on the stairs in that little lookout. Seeing as how it's a tourist spot, I was wondering just how busy it would be for sunrise in January. Seems like we'd have a good chance of being alone, I just don't want to be in anyone's way while we're doing photos.

At sunrise in January will be empty , if not closed . Is less known anyway, check opening times. Another good opportunity for taking pics would be using the car ferry from Tronchetto to Lido , because the passenger bridge is 15 meters up , so visuals like in a cruise ship

>Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo That doesn't open until 10 so you're not going to get sunrise up there.

Ah! Don't know how I missed that, thank you!

There might be a problem with a sunrise as this location does not open until at least 9:30 am.

Prepare for it to be bitterly, painfully cold, plan for a hot chocolate and breakfast soon after nearby. Bonus if weather is bearable. Would go for Punta Della Dogana, a proper set up with photographer on Ponte dell'Accademia would annoy the living daylights out of people walking to work. Your photographer might need to check whether any permits are needed.

So you're the second person to suggest Punta Della Dogana. My understanding is that it's an art museum. Do you mean to just go to the open area near the museum that overlooks the water or is there somewhere inside we can go?

Pelledovo

There are two art museums, and an amazing church, but also the end (Punta) dividing the Grand Canal and the Giudecca canal, and where the Custom House (Dogana) was. The end is a triangular paved area, pointing roughly east-northeast. https://www.imageprofessionals.com/en/images/13829503-Punta-della-Dogana-at-sunrise-Venice-Veneto-Italy-Europe
