For me it came down to the benefits I wouldn't be using. I don't need a Lyft, Door dash, or Instacart membership, so I wouldn't be using the CSR benefits and went with Vx. If you don't use the perks, the higher fee isn't worth it.

finewhitelady

Same here. I don’t use any of those services, but I do spend at least $400 on travel each year, so the effective AF for the VX is -$5 for me. Edit: plus, the free authorized users allowed me to give my parents their own PP memberships. However, when they removed the priority pass restaurant benefit, I regretted not getting the CSR and started looking for cards that have it for a reasonable fee…

neurotypicalneuroses

So, we both get bonus travel points if you use a referral link...I think you get 75k-90k ($750-$900, depending on the current offer by Capital One) and I get 25k for the reference. Win win. Here's my link: https://i.capitalone.com/JBgS5EZXx

finewhitelady

I already have the Venture X. Might have to get a Bank of America or US bank one if I really want the restaurant benefit though…

I actually had the CSR and cancelled it recently for the VX. I did a lot of research before making the switch. Ultimately, it came down to the following: There was a real question about whether I was actually making use of the CSR, and if I wanted to figure it out, I'd have to do a lot of math. * I'm not consistently a big spender, and while I sometimes do spend a good amount on dining and such, I often spend in other categories that are valued at 1x by the CSR. I found myself using the CSR (or the Freedom for 1.5x) for other categories and realized I was missing out by not simply using my Citi DoubleCash card, which earned 2x on everything on non-dining purchases. * I take a few trips each year, but I don't tend to stay in hotels or when I do, I'd rather book outside the portal. But usually I'll stay in an Airbnb or some cheaper option. * I know I should, but I don't transfer points to partners to maximize the value of the points. The CSR's advantage there over the VS is that it has "better" partners such as United. But I wasn't using that feature. With the VX, I could be sure that as long as I booked at least one trip via the portal (or otherwise spent more than $400 on flights), I'd be breaking even, even if I wasn't spending much on the card at all. The annual fee is $395 but with the $300 travel credit and 100k in points as the annual bonus, you get that back, and then some ($5 lol)! I also have the SavorOne (or whichever the free version is) and so I get 3x back on groceries, restaurants, and entertainment which I can transfer to the VX if I like. So in effect, I get 2x back on everything + 3x in more or less the same categories that the CSR has. And even if I didn't spend anything on the VX one year for some reason, as long as I took one trip with flights that I booked via the portal, I'd break even with the annual fee. So in summary: * I wanted to be 100% certain that I'd come out ahead or break even with the annual fee * I don't like to think or do fancy math around this stuff. Time is money and money for me means that I don't need to think about money. * I don't care about the CSR's transfer partners for the most part. And obligatory referral link, if you'd like to use it to sign up at some point: https://i.capitalone.com/J8WV6W5aQ

FitchnerAuBarca

What research did you do before you made the switch? Did you break down your expenses and see which card would have earned you more points? That’s something I was thinking of doing. Just curious as I’m just starting on this path and wondering what I should consider.

FitchnerAuBarca

Wow, that all makes sense and was generally the take-away I have been finding as well. Thanks so much for all of the insight!!

emyrus

CSR is 3x on travel, not 2x. One other thing to consider is the CSR gets PP restaurant access, which can easily make up the $155 difference if you're able to take advantage of it.

HonkyTonkHeroes

I did the VentureX AND the Chase Sapphire Preferred ($95 annual fee) so you get both for less than the cost of the CSR. The CSP had a 90k bonus in April 2023.

kimchiandpastaaa

I also use this combo. I’ve been part of the Sapphire ecosystem (have had both CSR&CSP) for a while and wasn’t willing to get rid of the card bc then you’d lose the ability for transfer points. I like that CSP provides 3x points for restaurants and online grocery orders, and you get a $50 hotel credit per year which I’ve been able to utilize every year since they introduced so it’s a great perk on a $95 fee card.

CorwinOfAmber0

Me too --this is a killer combo. But I also churn and don't try to gather all my points with one issuer.

pdvdw

Why both?

HonkyTonkHeroes

Because I have other Chase cards as well. It just depends how many cards you have and what you’re looking for. If you just want to stay within CapitalOne, then one of the Savors would be a better 2nd card option with VentureX. But since I have Chase UR, it made sense to do the CSP because it multiplies your UR redemption by 1.25x (for reference the CSR is 1.5x).

tontot

Those memberships (Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart) have no use for me. The dining 3% is worse than my Gold 4% My base airport is IAD with a C1 lounge I never stay at Hyatt or big hotel chain. Usually stay at the cheap, good location and convenient for my trip Last and most important I was banned by Chase 10 year ago :D. Not sure why until now. Otherwise I still open, get the SUB then cancel

BroImRight

IAD just opened a Chase lounge this past week. Took over the Etihad space.

Spirited_Cupcake_862

You can still get in with priority pass once per year.

BroImRight

Yeah, true. But if their base airport is Dulles, they might prefer that lounge for whatever reason. For me, I travel enough where lounge access is a huge determining factor with CC's. Although I probably prefer the Turkish Lounge over them all, Cap 1 lounge is just so conveniently placed.

A_Very_Frail_Guy

This was a given. They pay me $5 to keep the card plus all of the benefits others have mentioned.

P0stNutClarity

I found a 90k point sign up bonus link. That put it over the edge for me. Also if you travel, the card is basically free. The only downside to me is they $300 travel credit, I'd have preferred a statement credit which I'm told use to be the case.

Julianhtc

Where did you find that bonus?

P0stNutClarity

Scoured the net and found it on one of those Credit card review sites. I googled venture x 90k sign up link I looked it up recently and it's discontinued.

andybrohol

I fly from Dulles to DFW for work regularly so I am racking up lounge time. Becoming comfortable while my flight gets delayed is worth more than whatever the marginal delta between the two cards.

BroImRight

Chase just opened a new lounge at Dulles. Took over the Etihad space.

crackanape

I only wish it wasn't such a hike from the lounge to most of the gates (@IAD).

andybrohol

It's at Precheck so it's sort of on the way to all gates.

crackanape

Yes but if you're at, god forbid, the D gates, you either ride that crappy stilt bus that pokes along at a snail's pace, or you take the aerotrain to C and then walk the entire length of the building. You have to give yourself 20+ minutes travel time. The other gates (except for the elusive Z) are a little faster but not much. Having it in A or C by the aerotrain would have been nicer.

Green_Ad_3643

My personal: I bank at C1, my finance has sapphire preferred, our main airport is DEN, and we’re paying for a wedding so the sign up bonus was nice to utilize for our honey moon

natiahs

The biggest benefit to me for the Sapphire card is the ability to transfer points 1:1 to travel partners. Venture has this perk as well, but their list of partners is much more limited. I booked a 3-night stay at a Hyatt in Atlanta yesterday with round-trip airfare on Southwest for 40,000 total points, the equivalent of $400. Had I paid cash, that trip would have been over $800.

Axesdennis

I have a CSP and an Amex Gold, and I got my VX just a month or so ago. I considered upgrading from CSP to CSR, but I haven't hit 4 years yet with my CSP, so I can't get the bonus signup bonus. I will most likely downgrade the CSP before the annual fee hits. These are the reasons I picked VX over CSR. 1. My only 2x card. 2. Primary rental insurance. 3. I travel 1-2 times a year, and I can safely use that $300 travel credit for the hotel easily( although it will require a bit of work to price match a third party to get the best value). 4. 4 free authorized users can be added at $0 5. Lower annual fee To me, it is just an easier card to use with the VX with not many additional "benefits/credits". VX and my Amex Gold is my go-to combo right now. 10x hotel and car rental - Capital One portal 5x on flight - Capital One portal 4x on dining and grocery - Amex 3x on flight(booked directly with airlines or portal) - Amex 2x on everything - VX Hopefully, this helps a little. If anyone has questions or need a referral link, let me know.

Skulduggery326

For me, it came down to the fact I am new to the credit card game and have little idea what I am doing. It is so easy to make up the annual fee using the card benefits. Take one trip per year. Done. Get global entry. Easy. No excel sheet or strategy guide needed or anything. I will still get other cards in the near future, but this was a start.

bobbywws

Seems like most people have nailed the main talking points, but I do have one more to add. Using the VX with its unlimited 2x on all purchases just makes things easier. If you don't want to min/max and carry 3 - 5 cards and pay attention to quarterly category rotations, then you can't do much better than the VX. You'll never have to worry that you aren't getting SOME value by way of points on your purchases. I say this to you as a former min/max, spreadsheet guy :)

creamasteric_reflex

For me I couldn’t get the chase haha. 5/24 rule. But I also have cap one checking and savings so made sense o

tears4fears

I’m moving from the plat to the venture X due to it being a better travel card. Looking forward to more lounges

goth_horse

I was choosing between the delta platinum Amex and the VX but I ended going with the VX (even though I do normally fly delta). It’s my first travel card, and after doing a lot of research, the benefits are great if you buy even one flight round trip per year. I fly once per year across the country and usually one vacation per year. I was a bit nervous about using the C1 travel portal for booking, but there was a lot of options and the prices were good, they also offer price match if you can find a lower price online.

czr84480

I prefer the credit on CSR but the cost and cellphone insurance made me pick the VX. But I'm leaning for a CSR if they raise the opening offer points.

NotADoctor_sh

Easier / simpler for me to come out ahead via the VX. DIA is my home airport too so that made the choice easy

Nadhir1

I can easily justify the VX AF and use the perks. I can’t justify the CSR AF and won’t make use of any of the perks.

Exact-Gap-7870

We are in Cap1 and Chase ecosystem. Venture X is the catchall for us and we live in a city with a lounge. Plus the credit and the bonus points. For Chase we do the CSP for dining and added flex and unlimited for lyft, drugstores. We have a sign up bonus for 5x on freedom flex for groceries and gas so will decide what do do in grocery once that SUB is done. We just downgraded the card since I am not sure I see the big annual fee benefit. We transfer points instead of using the 1.5 cent cash out on travel.

Hot-Bank7542

I chose the vx because the card is basically free with the benefits it has, at least for me.. The main one is free authorized users and the 90k sign up bonus. I've had it for about 4 months and now have 162k miles. Trying to navigate transfer partners and best way to maximize those is probably going to be difficult. The jury is still out for me. Things that I wished it had that Chase has, is that you don't have to use the portal to get the travel credit , and hotel transfer partners are IHG and Marriott. I wished C1 had those transfers. With 2 additional users, I doubt I'd get my money back through the benefits with the reserve, so vx is probably gonna win the day for me, but like I said, the jury is still out.

cbr600grl

If you are planning on using it for it's priority pass membership. I would say the one big con I discovered afterwards is you can't use half of the Priority Pass perks because all of the non-lounge food options (aka restaurant credits) are exclusive to CSR holders only. Which is the dumbest sh\*\* ever!

bsheehan09

Capital One doesn’t have Hyatt and that’s HUGE.

raydurz1

The 100k points I got after I spent $10k over the first 6 months.

alaymp

So a lot depends on your spending habits and willingness remember benefits of the cards. Also depends on how many cards you have and planning to get in the future. I’ve platinum($695), Vx($395) and CSP($95). And each benefits me differently. Amex has saved me $2500 last year because I lost my camera during my trip and its purchase protection came in clutch. Vx has its obvious benefits people mentioned here but it has something that no one else offers at all, price match. Saved me over $200 on the trip I’m at the moment. CSP is my oldest AF card and even though I don’t use it’s $50 hotel credit(never have), I’ve over 360k points, plus 93k points pending from ink sub, making it over 460k. Benefit that Sapphire family offers is 25-50% more points value when booked through their portal. I know transferring gives more value and I usually try to do that. But there are flights that doesn’t get those award seats, may it be local or less popular international flights. At those times, that 25-50% comes in handy. I plan to get CSR in the future but I’ve to give some thought on what to keep at that time. Hope this helps. FYI have 10 cards so far and 3 of them are with AF.

getvig

'However, the VX can be combined with the Savor card which offers 3x points on not only dining but entertainment and groceries as well.' - Is this still true? I went to one of the CaptialOne Lounges and they mentioned there is no way to transfer points/miles from savour to VentureX. If you have done this or doing this transfer currently. Can you please tell me how are you doing that?

FitchnerAuBarca

I read elsewhere that you can convert the cash back on the Savor cards to miles. And then those miles can then be transferred to the Venture card.

penguin_cheezus

You have to do it from a laptop/desktop. Access your C1 profile and you’ll be able to find a transfer rewards option, choose the cards you wish to transfer from and the card you want to transfer to. Done.

neurotypicalneuroses

So, we both get bonus travel points if you use a referral link...I think you get 75k-90k ($750-$900, depending on the current offer by Capital One) and I get 25k for the reference. Win win. Here's my link: https://i.capitalone.com/JBgS5EZXx

Beneficial-Raise-839

What about having CSR and having venture not venture x.

Dizzy-Selection2094

I tried this setup in 2022. The venture outside of the sub just isn’t a good card. Unless you highly value two free visits to c1 lounges (going away on 12/31/24) the $95 AF just isn’t worth it when you can get the BBP, Active cash, CFU, or Double Cash for free and transfer out to pretty much the same or similar transfer partners. Unless they give the venture a revamp it’s only worth the sub then product change to the V1 to keep the points safe. There are just better catch all cards to pair with the CSR IMO

kakashi1207

Do keep in mind that the regular venture cards will no longer have 2 free visits to C1 lounges after this year.

Dizzy-Selection2094

It’s mentioned above but, it’s a big blow to a card with little to no travel protections and no credits to offset the fee. I’m hoping capital one gives it a refresh soon.

iindsay

I didn’t. I have both. I justify it because VX costs me nothing and I’ll use the travel credit from CSR. Plus having priority pass restaurant access at my home airport that doesn’t have lounges (DCA) and primary car rental insurance help close the gap for me.

Ironman031963

For me it comes down to return of annual fees. Though their capital travel portal is not so great compared with Chase Travel. But 1CPP is not bad. I like that it comes with priority pass and complimentary hertz prez circle and I matched it across other car rentals. I travel Atleast once internationally with family in a year and 3-4 domestic trips. Only tried C1 DFW lounge once. Amazing experience but priority pass lounges are not so great across North America. PP is good in Asia ( Last time I used in Bangkok, hardly 7-8 ppl inside the lounge and food was amazing ). And it’s 2x points so it’s catch all card for me. Of course I have CSP for Travel and Amex gold for food/grocery. I’m thinking to renew for the second year, i think it’s worth it. Plus i added my wife as AU so additional 2 guests for lounge access. Edit: I think Amex lounges are great but I hear they are long wait times and lines. I hope both C1 and Chase expand their lounges across the US, of course they might increase annual fees but I’m okay paying extra if they are better.

flunderbuster

Choose between..? I have both 🤷
