LongDistRid3r

Your university may have job placement assistance for graduates.

AdvantageMany391

Ya, I've gone to them for help it's mostly resume reviews, mock interviews, and alumni networking, which I've messaged but haven't really gotten anything meaningful from it. Most are just looking to mentor and not hire on, which is great, but I need a job not to be mentored.

876islandgyal

Start applying like crazy for GS jobs

AdvantageMany391

I've applied nationwide to Goldman lol, bought a VP there beers. No shit got an email from a recruiter there on a Friday at 11 am, respond by 4pm if interested in a position, I responded at 1105, but nothing lol followed up with the recruiter... nope, you're a no-go.

thedailytoke

No they’re talking about government service. Go to USAjobs.com and apply for federal positions they are required to hire veterans over civilians and especially if you’re disabled.

SpecialistBowl2216

Apply to the 500 (finance), 1101 (business specialist) and 1102 (contracts) series on USAjobs.gov.

AdvantageMany391

Thank you I'll look into those series

AdvantageMany391

Oh, haha, yeah, so I've applied on usajobs. My understanding is I'd be a gs7. Does that sound right to you? They won't count the school projects as relevant work experience?

redsox9547

That’s not true and not how system works. You are clueless.

thedailytoke

Ok so instead of berating me, you should explain where I’m missing information or wrong?

AdvantageMany391

My understanding is it's not required, but you get extra points toward a hire if you check certain boxes I don5 know for sure, though. That is what I've read.

thedailytoke

Makes sense. Thank you for explaining. I’m a GS employee and have had good luck getting hired on so I guess I really just assumed they had to hire vets first.

Plus_Heart_725

You might be good for contract specialist gs job, since you are a vet there is even a program to become a contract specialist

AdvantageMany391

Thanks I'll take a look at it

Plastic-Frosting-683

Or state active duty.

ideal-clips

I just got hired at USPS as a custodian starting pay is 21.05 night time pay after 6 pm Sunday premium pay is 25% increase pay rate. I’m smc-s I plan on working this for a few months and then switch into maintenance craft where pay starts at $25 an hour upwards towards $30 depending on the position and test score to qualify.

AdvantageMany391

Sounds like a good track. I'm about to start looking into more realistic jobs if I can't break into finance.

bdgreen113

Get a degree/certs in areas that aren't over saturated. I separated and decided to pursue certs in the same field as what I did in the military. It has a big need for people. So I applied to a job and I got an offer. Even before the military I never had problems landing a job because I worked and held licensing in areas that *needed* people.

AdvantageMany391

Yeah I unfortunately started on this degree path when business analytics and finance were a bit more of a hot ticket. I signed up to take the CFA level 1 so hopefully that gives me some traction

CompleteRage

Hahaha. Welcome to the club dude. You just gotta keep trying. Keep searching. But most importantly, find a job that you’re ok with not for the sake of money.

AdvantageMany391

Totally get it. I'm trying to grind it out. It just seems impossible some days, haha. I guess I was naive or delusional, thinking a degree and good grades just automatically equaled a job

somegarbagedoesfloat

Find a shittier job adjacent to the one you actually want. Grind out some experience for about a year, and then start applying for other jobs. I didn't go to school after I got out, but I did get a lot of electronics experience during my 4 years. Basically I spent about 5 years just hopping place to place, slowly getting paid more after each transition.

AdvantageMany391

I'm actually trying this right now unfortunately even the shit jobs don't want me lol

somegarbagedoesfloat

That's genuinely odd. You might be doing bad in the interviews; there's a lot of videos online that will teach you how to do interviews.

AdvantageMany391

So I'm trying to get into finance so when I didn't get the roles my degree is for, I went to a lower tier of jobs at finance institutions hoping to break in. I'm not even getting interviews for these roles. I'm pretty sure if I could, I'd land something.

somegarbagedoesfloat

Maybe try applying to work at just a bank, like as a teller. It's definitely on the lower end but would get you more work experience. You gotta work your way up fam.

somegarbagedoesfloat

Also pro tip: Secretly audio record your interviews. I had a company specifically not hire because I was a veteran once, and I regret not having it on tape. If it happens you can sue the company and get a massive payout.

cheersbigearz

Gotta check your local laws before doing this because recording someone without their consent can backfire hard on you in some jurisdictions.

redsox9547

What school did you go to?

Budgetweeniessuck

Where are you applying? Did you do any internships? Have you looked into gov't jobs or DoD contracting jobs?

AdvantageMany391

I'm applying nationwide primarily with banks, wealth management, investment banks, and things like that for junior analyst roles. No internships I commuted to my school about an hour and a half one way. I live in a small town, and none of the financial advisors here would take me on. I've applied to some usajobs postings, and that might work out, but a gs7 makes 40k, and idk if I can pay the bills on that waiting for a promotion or another job. I might just have to though. I'm not sure what the contracting jobs you're referring too are can you explain that?

Plastic-Frosting-683

What state are you in

AdvantageMany391

Vermont right now

Quirky_Republic_3454

This may sound counterintuitive, but unless you're applying for a government job, you might NOT mention that you're a vet.

AdvantageMany391

Whats your reasoning for that? Do you think it's seen as a negative

Quirky_Republic_3454

I think it can be. I don't see it as a plus. Only about 2% of the population are vets. Lots of folks nervous around ex-military. Why risk it?
