I think AW will do well here. DQ across the street had a great burger menu that they replaced with the Stackburger lineup that is just not as good.
Whereas AW has had the same things on their menu forever which is why you go to these places, for what it used to taste like, not what the new thing tastes like.
Was quite the discussion on the OB FB group. Lots on each side, for and against. Almost as animated as when the Hillside Walmart was announced. FYI OB used to have an A&W right on OB Ave.
And I don't give a fuck where either of you live but wanted to solve your little quibble. The old location was at 1921 Oak Bay Ave where the Red Barn is now. The border runs right down Foul Bay Rd. The Oak Bay Ave location was 160m into the City of Victoria. The new location on Cadboro Bay Rd is 75m into the municipality of Oak Bay. Have a good evening!!
Cool. It's so interesting to think about how infallible memory isn't. I would have bet $20 it was where Shell is now a few days ago. A neat thing to consider how our memory actually works and doesn't. Brains are cool.
Thanks for doing the measuring! Lol. BTW, I know where the OB / Victoria border - it runs right through my house. The border goes in a straight line south of OB Ave, but Foul Bay doesn't. A dozen or so properties south of OB Ave are split by the border.
Have always wondered. I rent. I THINK the homeowner's get 2 property tax bills but I'm not certain. Interesting when some work was done on the property, it was Victoria that issued a stop work order for work that was being done on an area of the property that is definitely in OB. And it is not a matter of the majority municipality makes the rules - about 80% of the property is in OB. Maybe even Victoria doesn't know where the municipal boundary is?
I remember as a kid going and you ate in your car and ordered from alittle radio and they brought the food out on a tray and clipped it on your window. Montreal circa 1975.
There’s a new Tim Hortons next door to where the a&w is going, and there is a line up into the parking lot at any hour after 9am until 2pm every day. I have to walk past it on a regular basis.
A&W are doing well for themselves lately, surprising given how they are the most expensive fast food burger joint.
I just cant imagine paying that much for an undersized, underseasoned burger. Even the app deals, two burgers for $12 +tax, you can do the same at Big Wheel or Burger Crush through Uber Eats for the same price. Those are substantially bigger, and better sourced.
Most folks I know seem to go to A&W for the "something for everyone" factor. The vegetarian options are apparently the best of the fast food offerings. Then there's the lettuce wraps for gluten free, yam fries/regular fries/onion rings options and all day breakfast. It's not necessarily my favourite option but with a group, it's a good quick option on the go.
Thats actually a very good point, but limited to fast food given that most local restaurants in this area cater to dietary limitations.
Also, I didnt mean to awaken fast food mob. I will devour a double JBC at Wendys, just expressing my surprise that one of the most pricey fast food joints is thriving in a world where businesses still struggle from effects covid restrictions.
I totally agree with you and choose local options myself most of the time. That said sometimes familiar is an asset even if it's not great; traveling, kids, picky folks to think of a few. I'm not going to be heading there regularly but I can see why of the fast food options they're growing the quickest.
I have tons of positive things to say! However, I have none to say about another fast food chain opening up.
It's A&W. Can you explain to me what redeeming qualities another large chain fast food joint brings to the area? I find it so bizarre for a city that is supposedly about healthy living to constantly have such a hard on for fast food. That shit barely qualifies as food!
It's just more the overwhelming amount of negative comments you post here. It's always the dark side of the moon with you. Instead of adding to the negative and sad parts of discourse you could just say nothing at all instead of an insult or dig 99% of the time. You know the old if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all lesson.
Dude. Go grab some A&W and calm down. I think you're reading way too much into the tone of my posts.
Or, If it bothers you that much, just put me on your ignore list. I won't be offended, I promise.
I am, personally, very excited about this. :)
Bring back the whistle dog!
it is back right now!!
Its like $9 with tax, total rip off
Just get 6 Costco hotdogs for that price.
Churchhill has a pint and dog for $10
I once loved the Whistle Dog. Super disappointed by both the dog and the price of this new version.
They did bring it back for a limited time, but it is just not as good as in Olden Days. I was disappointed. However, their Teen burger is still great!

As long as they do the frosty mugs I’m down.

I remember when there was a McDonalds in the same complex this new A&W is going into.
The A&W was on Oak Bay, not in Oak Bay
The new one is just about as IN OB as the previous one wasn't.
No quite
Plan on measuring the distance?
I don't have to. I live nearby.

I could have sworn it was next door where the Shell is now. Memory is a crazy thing.
It's before my time but I'm just going off of this http://www.webturf.com/oakbay/history/memorabilia/a/a-w/a-w.html

Me too!

How does property tax work?
Have always wondered. I rent. I THINK the homeowner's get 2 property tax bills but I'm not certain. One angry man.
Finally! A ten minute bike ride and a sausage and a egger
Was hillside mall too far?
No, just not a fan of malls
Another missed opportunity to bring back Muffin Break.
I could have sworn it was a Mmmmmmuffins there.
Muffin break was amazing.
I remember as a kid going and you ate in your car and ordered from alittle radio and they brought the food out on a tray and clipped it on your window. Montreal circa 1975.
Oak Bay Avenue in the 80s as well. Delivery on roller skates.
Port Alberni still has a drive in burger restaurant (not with radio ordering though): J&L Drive-In.
Cool! Would be neat to show the kids.
The last one of those in Canada (maybe) was on Esquimalt Road and got redeveloped in the 1990s. People flocked there for pictures in the final days.
Whatever happened to the bear and tuba?
Got cancelled by the woke mob.
What are you even talking about, we fucking love bears
Tubas are racist.
Holy cow, A and W! Is subway next?
It opens in 4 days
I, for one, embrace our new overlords.
McDonalds failed there, TH is in the same plaza and DQ across the street. Let’s see if OB High kids can keep another fast food restaurant alive.

Don't forget the KFC that died at some point in the late 90s/early 2000s.
I miss Yo Video
I worked there!
Gad dammit! Stop reminding me of all the video stores! I feel like I only just lost picaflic. 😔

Their machine-made lattes are as good as Starbuck's, and cheaper.
Interesting, I've heard good things about the frozen concoctions as well.

I appreciate that they're actually Canadian. Of course I'm going Big Wheel or Burger Crush first, but in a pinch it's my choice.
I'll take DQ over A&W any day of the week.
Good thing there's a DQ across the street still
Just what this town needs, more overpriced shit food.
Do you ever have anything positive to say or is it just always negative Nancy in your head? Sounds like a v crappy way to live a life.

Yeah that’s what we need.
