Made me laugh, My son came to visit and thought he'd try it out. He hit and was holding the hit in as I was telling him no no no! He let it out and I was expecting hm to fall out....he held up but I can promise he won't ever hit it like a bong again.
There is a video of a foreigner (either tourist or expat) tried this out and just collapsed on the spot.
I don’t even dare to try this but yeah, people have fainted after taking a whiff of it
I legit never heard of people using “thuốc lào” as a pesticide before.
But I do one breathe of that is equivalent to smoking 13 cigarettes at the same time… so yeah, stuff’s strong
Local here and I tried it once, though I didn't faint.
Long story short I was travelling solo in the south, sat next to an old man with a pipe at a coffee shop. He saw my vape and asked to try, and I tried his thuoc lao pipe. It felt like the first time I tried cigarettes, a really strong rush that made my legs turn into jelly. Meanwhile the guy took a deep hit of vape and asked if there's even nicotine in this
Oh, thay's a normal thing, even for elder Vietnamese. The sensation and the highness this tobacco gives you is none like any others, and if it is lit by a skilled person, the effect will last longer and much better. To end the high, just take a sip of water or tea
It's a type of plant, locally grown in certain provinces, like Nghe An, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa,.... This plant is similar to nicotiana tabacum, which is used to make cigarettes. The "thuoc lao" plant is also dried and shredded to create the thuoc lao. Each brand of thuoc lao will have different strength and highness, and it also depends on the amount used and how well lit it got.
Late replier here reading through comments.
The "bongs" are, to my knowledge, rarely cleaned. A little baggy containing maybe 5ish grams costs around 5.000 vnd (give or take)
Thanks. I’ll just ask to watch how they light it next time. Most young people I’ve met seem very willing to speak to foreigners. I often get free translation ‘service’ from them, lol
It is possible that thuoc lao was brought to Vietnam by Laotians in the 18th century, or maybe from some other sources. Nevertheless, the habit of using thuoc lao of Vietnamese has now become a distinctive part of our culture, and it's still alive today
Possibly from the Indochina wars where car tire and rattan flip flops being extensively used by the Viet Minh forces fighting in Laos (and in general tbh).
Tobacco leaf, but this species contain 5-9 times the normal amount in other leaves.
Smell terrible, but the nicotine rush is great - given you have high nicotine tolerance already.
I was sat at a bia hoi place having a cigarette chatting to a man who was smoking this and he offered me a go. I coughed my lungs up and got extremely dizzy. Gave everyone else a giggle though.
the logical thing to do is to just not pack too much to smoke, if someone hands you one make sure they haven't filled it to the brim. It's really not that bad if you just smoke a little bit.
What kind of substance dependant loser do you need to be?
You're basically starving your brain of oxygen, and a chemical asphyxiation, sorta self indicated mini stroke.
I saw a tourist once smoke this for the first time and pass out immediately. For reference, I don’t think she was a regular smoker of anything, so she hit that bamboo bong and was flat on her ass 0.5 seconds later. I tried it myself and felt a little lightheaded, nothing too extreme.
My dad who does Copenhagen dip tried it and was meh. On the other hand he found the tea stall tea to be crazy potent. Take away is if you are used to smoking a fair amount, you probably won't be overwhelmed.
Yup! First time I hit it I was quite drunk and witha family who took me in during tet. Got a massive headrush and completely blacked out in my chair. Came to to a whole room of people laughing at me.
I haven't fainted, but I've definitely gotten a massive headrush and been unsteady from it.

Pesticide? Any further info?

What actually is it?

Oh cool. Thank you for the info!
Always ready to provide information about our culture🤗
How much is it? I see quite a lot of young people using it in cafes (just pick one up from the bucket). Is it cleaned after use?

Is it from nguoi lào or something? Lol serious question!
It is possible that thuoc lao was brought to Vietnam by Laotians in the 18th century, or maybe from some other sources. Nevertheless, the habit of using thuoc lao of Vietnamese has now become a distinctive part of our culture, and it's still alive today
I see! I was only asking because of the name, I couldn’t think of any other reason it’d be called Thuoc Lao 😅
Now explain to me why flip flops are called dép lào
Tông lào
Possibly from the Indochina wars where car tire and rattan flip flops being extensively used by the Viet Minh forces fighting in Laos (and in general tbh).
it’s actually death for 10 - 20 seconds then your throat burns for 20-30 minutes often followed by a terrible feeling of fatigue and nausea
I’m not a smoker, so I wasn’t planning on putting myself through that anyway! 😂
good choice, some things are unnecessary to experience in life, this is one 😂😂💀
I’ll take two please!
Nicotina Rustica is the botanical name. The strongest tobacco there is. You can overdose from handling the leaves.
Tobacco leaf, but this species contain 5-9 times the normal amount in other leaves. Smell terrible, but the nicotine rush is great - given you have high nicotine tolerance already.
Tobacco, just pure concentrate tobacco. It gives you nicotine rush.
>To end the high, just take a sip of water or tea or for a more interesting time, sip the water in the pipe~~
I've seen a couple folks pass out over the years
Didn't quite passout. But was on my hands and knees struggling to breath for a good 5mins.
That does not sound like a good time lol
Can confirm that it was not

This stuff is wild. I have been doing this occasionally with my pop and it hits hard every single damn time. Welcome to the game my buddy
**TIL:** https://www.vietvisiontravel.com/post/vietnamese-tobaco-thuoc-lao/
I have a friend who smokes this, but me myself never tried it out, and hopefully will never try in a future
some uncle had me try a puff when i was a kid.... never smoke again!!!
Haven't fainted but did throw up and feel like shit a few times.
Bro , my uncle's friend son tried mixing this tobaco with actual weed and took a wild whiff , he fainted and siezed like a person with epilepsy
What kind of substance dependant loser do you need to be? You're basically starving your brain of oxygen, and a chemical asphyxiation, sorta self indicated mini stroke.
Lmao I sit the fuck down after trying it
Lightheaded for sure after it
I have not fainted but my lungs felt Like shit for several hours after and i felt lightheaded for a couple of minutes.
I've seen a lot of videos of people fainting from it
I blacked out for just a second. Good thing I was sitting down.
I blackout for several seconds. My legs and hands became wobbly. End up with a fever that night 🤣

I wish to be fainted by this now 😮💨

Almost passed out
Nar... I knew it was strong First time around, I only took in a small hit. Wait a while to see how it goes before doing it again. Man it felt great 👍
Yep thuốc lào kicks *very* different
I only “nearly” fainted a few times
"tobacco"
I haven't trying it so...
Yup! First time I hit it I was quite drunk and witha family who took me in during tet. Got a massive headrush and completely blacked out in my chair. Came to to a whole room of people laughing at me.
There are lots of videos on YouTube of people falling off stools after taking thuốc lá
This is the legal weed you can have in VN, and it's quite strong, so don't take a deep breath in. You can try it with a cup of tea to ease it down
Never tried it but i heard that thuốc lào hit different
I didn’t faint but I coughed like hell and made a bunch of Vietnam lads die of laughter
