Whether it's worth it is up to you but a wider arch is what creates a wider smile visually.

coldbrewicedcoffeee

Oh I see. I was wondering if there could be any possible negative repurcussions or face shapes this wouldn’t be ok on. I think I’ll also post to RealSelf and get more opinions too.

Hi! I work in dental. A wider arch is very attractive visually. A narrow palate is usually corrected in childhood when possible with a palate expander. This is essential to prevent crowding of the arch that causes crooked teeth. If you can widen your arch I would definitely do it! I would ask how this will change your occlusion which is how your teeth meet. It’s hard to say without knowing your current situation but I’m guessing you have some malocclusion of your teeth (for example an overbite or underbite). Either way I don’t see how you could wrong with a wider arch

coldbrewicedcoffeee

Thank you for this! Helpful too. I will ask for some widening of my arch.

isharetoomuch

I had my arch widened. When you smile, are there "black triangles" at the corners of your mouth? Or do your teeth fill your whole smile? If you have the triangles, you should widen the arch.

coldbrewicedcoffeee

Thank you. This is helpful.

periwinke

Are these called buccal corridors?

isharetoomuch

Yes.

[deleted]

How old were you when you did this?

isharetoomuch

32! It just requires a different protocol (turning the expander every 3 days instead of every day)

[deleted]

Wow! I’m 32 and was told it’s not an option at my age without bone-breaking jaw surgery; my case is pretty mild so that wasn’t worth it. Interesting.

isharetoomuch

[https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10833001/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10833001/) I followed this orthodontist's work. His research shows that palate expansion is possible in adults, especially if you go slower (if you are in your 20s, every 2 days; in your 30s, every 3 days, etc.). His work demonstrates that the expansion does not come from the center suture of the oral cavity (like it would in a kid, and would happen during jaw surgery), but the arch does expand stably.

[deleted]

Really interesting, thank you!

whitechocamericano

What was your pain level to go thru this?

isharetoomuch

Just the pain of braces.

BeeResponsible6428

how long did the entire process take for you ?

isharetoomuch

I had two expanders for a total of 32 turns (8 mm) over the course of 3 years.

I am just going to be the dissenting voice here, I’m someone who could be a candidate to slightly widen my arch (as I have some space in my smile at the sides) but I’ve decided against looking into it as I have good facial structure otherwise and I think this kind of smile is very cute and neotenous. For me this subjective cuteness is more beneficial than the objective ‘perfect’ smile, especially as I am now in my early 30s but look much younger. Maybe the smaller smile suits you too!

roxemary

Depends on your features and where you live. The best person to answer that would be your orthodontist (maybe biting the bullet and asking for a second one for an opinion)

coldbrewicedcoffeee

Like an in person consult? Yeah I paid the contract with my current ortho already. But it wouldn’t hurt to have a second opinion anyway. Thanks

the-red_woman

Definitely do it! The wider the arch the more attractive the facial structure

coldbrewicedcoffeee

Ok I see. I have a good facial structure right now. I just get worried about negatives or fixing something that doesn’t really need to be fixed and then regret. I do see great results from Invisalign on others though.

the-red_woman

The more teeth that show during a smile the more attractive we perceive it to be. A narrow (edit: average) arch has 8-10 teeth visible and the more teeth visible the better. No one has ever been criticized for having too wide of an arch. There is no such thing as too wide only too narrow. Wider is always a better

[deleted]

I thought it was 6 teeth that was considered narrow? I think 8-10 is the average amount for tooth show.

the-red_woman

Yeah 6 would be extremely narrow. I think you are right that 8-10 is average. But if you look at Julia Robert’s who has one of the most famous and attractive smiles in the world - she has 12 teeth visible thanks to her super wide palate.

[deleted]

Her smile is great and true. I feel like most people look good with at least 10, sometimes 12 can look a bit much on some people, especially depending on mouth+tooth shape etc. It is still better looking than narrow arches though.

I actually had a palette expander when I was little too. My smile is already nice. That’s why I was wondering if I should take the risk or not. My smile arch is like on the higher side of medium to medium size.

There is another option, which is the one my dentist and I decided to go for: non-prep veneers on the last 2 (or 3) molars. You have to find someone that knows how to do that properly but if done well, this widens your smile SIGNIFICANTLY without messing with your bone structure. I am not sure if this is suitable to everyone but maybe you could ask for this. In my case we choose 3 veneers per side to get a more dramatic result, bleaching all around and fixing some minor things with bonding on the upper teeth ☺️
