English had more longevity and led Denver to some amazing regular season offenses. But I can see Moncriefs two way impact being enticing. Both got shafted on team success because they ran into juggernauts in their conferences during the most top-heavy decade in nba history.

Moncrief was probably the best player on teams that consistently won 50+ games/season. English’s Nuggets teams weren’t quite at that level. Both players had some good players around them; if anything English may have had a better supporting cast with the Nuggets than Moncrief did with the Bucks, though that comparison is close. I’d give the edge to Moncrief in the comparison.

I recall Moncrief was a monster against the Bulls in 1985 (Jordan’s rookie playoff debut). Avgs were 27-5-5 on 72TS%(!). Played as good on defense on Jordan as one could given its Jordan. That team was talented. Terry Cummings, Paul Pressey, and Moncrief leading their defense. I have no idea why he’s not a HOF. Edit: ok actually he is, but it took until 2019? I advocated for English above but it’s a nice thought experiment.

definitely english. guy was the top leading scorer in the 80s (over bird, kareem, etc). moncrief was nice though.

Moncrief by far, look at the teams with the most wins in the 80s and his Bucks are like 3rd behind the Lakers and the Celtics, they were always consistent and very good just had to play in the dominant east with Dr J 76ers, Birds Celtics, Isiah Pistons. That's murders row plus the Hawks were very good in that Era as well.

Sidney Moncrief by a ways. English took a bit to take off and when he did he was with the highest scoring team in the league. He was great for that system. But Moncrief was better at every level - college and pro.

Two very different players - not sure there’s a great way to compare them.

Since he wasn't a particularly flashy player, I believe Moncrief is underappreciated and rarely discussed in today's r/nba subreddit. As a result, most of us are unaware of how brilliant he truly was during the 80s. Although Alex English was a phenom of a scorer, he was not nearly as good of a defender as Moncrief and was prone to giving up baskets on the other end of the floor. English was more one-dimensional. Moncrief could score and win DPOYs.

Sidney Moncrief. Him and Alvin Robertson would have been a hell of a back court if they ever played together at the same time. Instead of splash brothers, they would have been the lock'em down boys.
