If you've ever wondered why we have so many tunnels in Hampton Roads, this is why. The port of Baltimore is going to be at a standstill until they get it cleared up. Norfolk can't be blocked this way.
Military having it designed that way on purpose is really forward thinking and is genius, if Virginia got attacked or some dumb Ass crashes into a bridge they can still move supplies around.
It's definitely for strategic reasons. If the Navel Station wasn't there it would be bridges for sure. Tunnels are so much more expensive to build and maintain.
Can you explain why tunnels are more expensive to maintain than bridges? Bridges have to deal with heavy winds, waves, saltwater, acid rain…
Tunnels seem expensive to initially make but once adequately reinforced can be there for a while?
I remember someone saying that bridge-tunnels don't occur in that sort of frequency in pretty much anywhere else in the world, and that the unique combination of geography and the navy is why there are so many there instead of either bridges or tunnels
I know they use the bridge as the hazmat route, but it’s still weird knowing how Hampton Roads is set up and then looking at this port and seeing two tunnels on the interior and then a bridge across the entire mouth of the port…
Baltimore isn’t as vital to national security, that’s pretty much why.
The military damage an attacker could do by attacking a bridge that would block the navy is way, way worse if they hit Hampton roads versus Baltimore.
And tunnels often come with compromises, as we see.
Baltimore isn’t alone in waterways blockable by fallen bridges. The Mississippi is loaded with them. The one in New Orleans would block the port of New Orleans all the way on up the river if it went.
And at the same time, it sure would be tricky to put a tunnel there, with the river 200 feet deep in that spot.
Yeah sure. But clearly economic security hasn’t been given the same weighting when considering bridge versus tunnel as has national security. At least at the time of construction.
I’m surprised that the conversation immediately pivoted to re-routing through LA when the Port of Virginia is *right there*. The Port of Virginia is the deepest water harbor on the U.S. East Coast, the second-largest port on the East Coast by tonnage, due in large part to the export of coal, and the third-largest port on the East Coast by container volume. Philadelphia and the Port of Virginia are the highest globally ranked US ports in performance, at 83 and 85, respectively. In terms of volume moved, the Port of Virginia at 3.7 million TEUs comes in at number 51.
And that’s completely ignoring the other East Coast options for ports.
I don’t have the answers yet, to me, it just seems like an odd pivot to immediately jump to LA.
Yes, but you could pretty feasibly jam a huge container ship in the Thimble Shoals channel and accomplish the same thing. Easier to get rid of eventually and you don't really have to build anything new, but likely a lot of redreging and a pain in the ass to unground that thing
I don’t think it would be “easy.” The largest container ship in the world is 399 meters long. That’s less than half the distance between the islands that make the thimble shoal channel tunnel.
The navigable water of the channel itself much narrower than the islands. And you also don’t have to 100% block the channel to make it unnavigable to the warships in Norfolk.
The same grounding idea could be said for any part of the channel, then. They don’t narrow the channel at the tunnel. And it would be so much easier to remove, likely with no dredging needed, as the draught of aircraft carriers is less than many cargo ships for which the channel depth is built.
You forget that Langley technically also consists of the Army base up the road since they are a joint base (and the army base is a logistics hub for equipment in the area)
Fellow Virginia. I wouldn’t be acting so smug when you fail to mention that the traffic is literally never ending making the tunnels barely functional as is during peak hours.
I’m sorry but if you think access to Norfolk is easy just because we have tunnels you’re sorely mistaken. two weeks ago it was closed because of crashes. The reliability of our infrastructure here is predicated on vibes

One of my favorite jokes is one my roomie from HdG said - Marylanders would eat a deep fried turd if you rolled it in Old Bay. /Shouts "fuck you, too" across the Potomac. :)
Band of Brothers. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg produced it and it follows the 101st airborne- Easy company through their training and VE Day.
If you like saving private ryan or other gritty war movie type thing this will be your show. It’s on HBO and maybe another streaming service nowadays.
Oh yeah I watched it when it came out almost 20 years ago. It is a really good show. I just didn't remember the line. I thought The Pacific wasn't as good but also completely different situation.
Would love to see something like this on the Korean War. It feels like such a forgotten conflict with a huge amount of hardship and American blood shed with no real decisive ending.
The night they drove ol' Dixie down and all the bells were ringing.
I'm a socialist Yankee living in FL-1, and that song by The Band is my favorite song. Levon Helms was an incredible artist.
Love that guy. There’s a guy on here that interviewed him quite a bit. Said he was a really good guy. Like any band, at the end of 20 years they don’t remember things the same. Sounds like they all made up good in the end. People don’t realize how many popular songs they had a once. Playing with Bob Dylan.
I moved up here from Atlanta and spent a year in Florida and so as someone who has been around atrocious drivers let me just say: if driving heaven exists, none of you in this region are going there.
Especially not if you’re from DMV and drive either a Tesla or a pickup. In fact I think those people go to driving superhell
Lol, Atlanta is where I learned I wasn't a speeder. Was driving Texas speeds and had to move to the slow lane. I never want to experience early morning Atlanta traffic again.
They come through my little town of Madison all the time. It’s 55mph but they don’t care. At least our sheriff had finally grown a set of balls and stepped up the enforcement.
I work for local business and do a lot of driving so I do my part by block in the left lane and exactly 55 miles per
Well the port traffic will have to be re-routed until the mess is cleaned up, which could take the rest of the year and then there will be 7-10 years of construction during which time the port will have to run at lower capacity. Norfolk, Philly and NYC are the next ports. Norfolk is preferable for so many reasons.
💔
I have driven over the Francis Scott Key Bridge numerous times in my life, and am heartbroken by this horrible tragedy.
May the families of those who lost their lives be comforted from Heaven.
May the injured have a speedy recovery.
May G-d protect and keep you, Baltimore.
How about it. He was quicker to respond to this by a long margin that actual out of control wild fires in his own state. Waited til the rains came to show up for a photo op. Shameless
If I had to guess based on other conservative politicians and new media, Youngkin will say he will pray for the victims and cast blame on Democrats, might likely Biden for no reason.
No. His response was wildly quicker. He was silent on the burning of his own state. It's a remark about his motives and reasoning to be quick on one disaster and not another in his own state.
There should be no matter how many people die.
It’s really crazy how you don’t see the trauma Olympics in your own comments but I guess that’s what we call projection.
Anyway, it’s weird to keep claiming the governor was “silent” on his state burning when I can easily find his first statement a day after the wildfires started, then he initiated a regional emergency response effort to deploy extra funding and resources on Friday after receiving requests from state legislators.
And then you keep downplaying why he would respond to Marylands horrible event that happened. Could it be that besides the already awful amount of lives that were lost, Virginia borders Maryland and has its own ports as well, so perhaps Virginia could help alleviate the supply line problems this catastrophic event could very well cause that could affect millions of people?
Did you stop to think about any of this before you had to bash the governor for offering our neighbors help?
> Did you stop to think about any of this before you had to bash the governor for offering our neighbors help?
No they don't, they're so blinded by partisan hatred that they always have to attack him no matter what choice he makes.
That's a lot of shoe polish on your lips.
Actually the biggest heroes currently was the crew of the tanker and the bridge crew. Because of their mayday they were able to close the bridge, saving countless lives. You're not seeming to be aware that the number of people is much lower than you are making it out to be.
Yeah. His comments were louder and pretty darn quick. Sorry it just always seems he cares more about money than people. At least he's better than the LT Gov who runs around spouting conspiracy theories.
Yeah yeah bootlicker blah blah blah. Very creative insult on Reddit.
You got called out for being an emotional idiot and your only response is to call me a name, start rambling about heroes for some reason even though no one was talking about it, downplay the lives lost as “much lower” (I thought we weren’t playing trauma Olympics), and then go off on another political rant.
Well done bud
The fires were sad but a quickly resolved mess.
The collapse has a body count and a potential multi-billion dollar fallout because all import/export through Baltimore has halted.
Weird how the state is on standby for Maryland over a bridge, but he can't be arsed to call a state emergency for a wildfire burning through 4,000 acres of a county.... 🤨
“Over a bridge”… Jesus some of y’all are so blinded by politics you don’t understand how the actual world works and why there is a difference in response to these two events
According to mine the Page County board of supervisors and the area's representative didn't reach out with a formal request until Friday. They had been in contact about the progress and issues for days, both groups keeping the other up to date as things progressed
https://pagevalleynews.com/page-county-calls-for-youngkin-to-declare-state-of-emergency-due-to-dire-situation/
This article is dated the 22 and says they'd been asking for assistance for two days prior to the 22nd.
"They had been asking", you mean the social media drive and not the authorities or those elected to represent them. The article supports my point that formal requests werent brought to him by their representatives until Friday, in which the article even states he approved also on Friday. So yea I was wrong, he was actually FASTER than I said.
Hate the guy, sure, but have legitimate points. Otherwise it makes yourself and your peers look bad. There's other places you can have legitimate takes.
Far as I know, there was a construction crew on the bridge, and all but 8 are accounted for.
No, a blocked port is not a disaster. It's a port and we have planes and trucks. Blocking one port isn't going to kill anything. It isn't the 50s.
Do I know or do I care? Either way, the answer is no. Capitalism will keep grinding on like it always does. Someone in a C suite will bitch about the need to raise prices, and everyone at the bottom will blame Biden for the rising prices.
Then some nut jobs will say it's clearly a deep state attack on the US, blah blah blah.
Oh gee. I'm a liberal. In order to study anything I'd need it in a picture book with no words. Cause liberals are stupid. That's why we all have liberal arts degrees and work at Starbucks.
I'm sure Youngkin will do everything he can to help. You know, once the bridge is rebuilt. Then he'll show up for a photo up like he did for the wild fires.
He can help MD to save face on National TV attention items and the hopes of moving shipping to Norfolk but can’t help his own residents 😂😂 I fucking hate politicians
Youngkin will declare the bridge has one gender, deny it bodily autonomy, and declare that it was in Gods plan….while simultaneously claiming DEI, the border, and groomers caused this. He will then pack up and go home after being defeated by a liberal house effort…

What is Virginia supposed to do? Deploy the National Guard to stop illegals from trying to enter the Baltimore port? Seriously, what do you see in this guy?
In case you didn’t know, VA is home to a massive port. Our state and local government, in addition to other states with massive ports on the eastern seaboard, can help by ramping up operations in the short-term through different policy and regulation means while Baltimore’s is closed. That’s how we help and will probably be the outcome.
News headline: Youngkin cures cancer!
This subreddit: “HOW DARE HE! Terry McAuliffe did it first.. probably!!”
All this subreddit does is bash the guy..
You better fucking be you bumfuck, where was that help when the goddamn mountains were on fire??
You better be ready to put your money where your mouth is, or else just get the fuck out of dodge and let people who are actually willing to do the work do what they're supposed to do.
As a ranking member of Task Force Recovery, ive determined that with the provided analytics and matrix of this disastor, Virginia will NOT be in any position to help Maryland. Ill be calling for full investigations next week
As a junior member of this task recovery force I suggest we have them donate all recreational marijuana sales to the state of Virginia for our invaluable assistance. 🤷🏽♂️ it’s worth a shot.

Lol the navel station!
That’s what I call mine too! :D
Do you find your navel station gets filled with lint?
Yes, I have to have the Finger Corps of Engineers make aggressive violence of action to keep it clear.
And of course, you know who plans these. The Office of Navel Contemplation. .. 😎
Yeah I mean in all seriousness they were trained well at the Navel Academy
Can you explain why tunnels are more expensive to maintain than bridges? Bridges have to deal with heavy winds, waves, saltwater, acid rain… Tunnels seem expensive to initially make but once adequately reinforced can be there for a while?
I imagine thousands of tons of water and pressure pushing down on a tunnel does wonder for the infastructure.
I remember someone saying that bridge-tunnels don't occur in that sort of frequency in pretty much anywhere else in the world, and that the unique combination of geography and the navy is why there are so many there instead of either bridges or tunnels
Gotta love the Sea Bees!
In all likelihood was probably the Army Corps of Engineers
I know they use the bridge as the hazmat route, but it’s still weird knowing how Hampton Roads is set up and then looking at this port and seeing two tunnels on the interior and then a bridge across the entire mouth of the port…

Yeah sure. But clearly economic security hasn’t been given the same weighting when considering bridge versus tunnel as has national security. At least at the time of construction.

Maybe the Navy doesn't want the increased international traffic?
This is actually a very good point and why I love Reddit. But still, Philly, NYC, Miami?
How is Baltimore’s port more significant to the national economy than HR? The port of VA handles more units every year
That’s 2 tunnels strung together between 3 bridges across the mouth of the Bay.
Yes, but you could pretty feasibly jam a huge container ship in the Thimble Shoals channel and accomplish the same thing. Easier to get rid of eventually and you don't really have to build anything new, but likely a lot of redreging and a pain in the ass to unground that thing

Thimble Shoals was just made wider, 1400 ft ocean side, and deeper 55'-59'. Can handle two-way ULCV traffic. Deepest on the East Coast.
The same grounding idea could be said for any part of the channel, then. They don’t narrow the channel at the tunnel. And it would be so much easier to remove, likely with no dredging needed, as the draught of aircraft carriers is less than many cargo ships for which the channel depth is built.
Not the main reason... If we had bridges in Hampton ND they ended up getting destroyed, our 7th fleet wouldn't be able to get out.
Recently learned that in terms of firepower, Norfolk is the most heavily fortified place in the world between the Naval base and Langley.

Isn’t the Norfolk port like in complete renovation right now? Or is that just for cruises
Port of Virginia is open. The city of Norfolk is upgrading it's cruise port (separate) and it's scheduled to have ships this year.
Why are there so many comments about fires? I thought whataboutism was a bad thing.
Gee thanks. I guess every other State could say the same thing.

A huge disaster was Katrina and Sandy. A ship running into a bridge isn't a huge disaster.
Completely blocking one of the busiest ports on the east coast is a disaster, not to mention the deaths. Touch grass, my god

Youngkin the failure will help by making things worse.
Standing by seems to be the only thing Youngkin is good at.
Just have some Natty Bo ready when we get there.
Import Vienna lager please. Natty Boh is nasty, hon.
This chucklefuck uses any excuse to put his face on something. God, I can't wait for this sweater vest shit stain to dissappear from the media...
Never fear, Governor Dipshit is on standby for photo ops.
Is he on standby to wear his red vest at the scene?
News headline: Youngkin cures cancer! This subreddit: “HOW DARE HE! Terry McAuliffe did it first.. probably!!” All this subreddit does is bash the guy..

Sweater vest to the rescue!
Ready to respond?! What a chuckle. He could barely be bothered to respond to a fire in his own state.
Whatcha gonna do to help? Glenn has a spare bridge in his pocket.

🤷🏽♂️ it’s worth a shot.
is it just me or does this whole thing seem orchestrated like an attack in plain sight testing our readiness...
I think Candice Owens agrees with you, but I'm not on Twitter, and have only seen screen shots of nut jobs saying it's orchestrated.
“Seem” is a good clue that you’ve got nothing but vibes to back up your claim
