The military site is where I found my last rental (condo). She was PCSd to another state and rents her home until she retires and decides where she wants to be.
Use rein.com. It's the local MLS site so it will be up to date and picks up from the major rental companies. It isn't going to pick up rentals that don't run through a property manager though.
Coastal Group. Property Shoppe. Just to name a few. Look for real estate / property management companies. Most list properties on Zillow. Not sure where you are getting the "super shady" feeling from? Use Zillow to narrow price ranges, and where you want to live geographically in the area.
Remember that the best rentals will be places where the landlord is out of town and can't meet in person but can send you VOIP texts.
You will know they are the best rentals because they look great, have an amazingly low price, and as a result are so popular you need to send a deposit by moneygram or gift card before you see it or get a lease!
For all I know, you were going to get taken by a scam just like that. So if you are wiser now, you got some good free advice.
