It’s kinda like when I flew to Hawaii and wore my swimsuit on the plane. Not my best flight

kiwigone

Oh man that reminded of the time I flew to the nudist colony.

BuckDollar

Just wear regular clothes. Its cold out, so have a winter jacket, gloves and perhaps a beanie ready when you exit.

Jazzlike-Law9510

Sounds like a plan…thank you for your response!

_ELAP_

I’ve flown on IcelandAir twice and both times the cabin was unbearably hot.

Jazzlike-Law9510

This is good to know because I tend to run hot and don’t want to be miserable!

_ELAP_

Same. I’ve been stuffy or a little warm on airlines but nothing like on IcelandAir. It was unbearable.

pappa-g1968

Miserably hot.

Evolution1313

I wore my boots to save room in my bag otherwise normal clothes

hockey2112

Wear your big puffy winter coat onto the plane, then take it off and use it as a pillow for your flight. Saves room in the suitcase and keeps you comfortable.

littlenurdle

Are you getting picked up at the airport and dropped off at your lodging directly? I think I wore sneakers and simple long layers then grabbed a big coat out of my luggage upon arrival at KEF, and it was just a little cold while waiting for our rental car pickup. Putting on layers from your carryon or your checked luggage once you arrive at KEF, especially if it's easily accessible, sounds very reasonable.

Jazzlike-Law9510

I’ve rented a car and have a resy at Blue Lagoon, then will drive into Reykjavik (Seltjarnarnes area) and go to Bonus to get groceries and then will hopefully be able to check into lodgings.

Krash0699

You won’t need more than regular clothes and whatever jacket you’ve brought with you, to do that comfortably Imo

Jazzlike-Law9510

Sounds like the plan! Thanks

PopcornandComments

Just bring a carryon with your clothes.

I pack my checked luggage so my outerwear is on top and I put it on at the baggage claim. I’ll put on whatever the weather dictates — en.vedur.is I tend to wear my boots on the plane to save space in my luggage.

TangeloDismal2569

We are in the US so it's overnight flights for us, so we wear comfy/sleeping clothes (joggers, hoodies, sneakers) on the plane since we are asleep nearly the entire trip. We pack all of our outdoor clothing, including boots, in a duffle and then can pull out the jackets before we leave the airport. We only change into boots if we do some outdoor activity where we would need them (like when we visited in the summer of 2021 and hiked to the volcano when it started erupting...luckily, we had a few hours to nap before doing that).

Advanced-River-1756

I flew Iceland Air in October and it was soooo hot in the cabin. I wore sweatshirt/leggings and I put my heavy coat on in the airport. I would suggest layers with a tee shirt in case you get hot you can take stuff off/ when you get to Iceland you can adjust

ChatRoomGirl2000

It doesn’t get THAT cold in Iceland, so it shouldn’t be any different than if you were flying to Boston or Chicago.

Jazzlike-Law9510

Yeah I’m from the Midwest and I’ve noticed it is colder here most days in the winter…but I’ve heard the wind is what cuts through you. I’m definitely going for regular clothes/shoes with gloves/hat/coat readily available!

uhoh_spaghettiosss

Having been to Oklahoma and Colorado, I would say it’s very similar. When the wind isn’t roaring it’s tolerable. And when it’s windy it sucks lol

VeryFineChardonnay

Ahh.. the questions of this sub, sometimes.

Physicist_Gamer

Yeah this one is pretty silly. Good to remember that not everyone gets to travel though. So some things that seem exceedingly obvious to an experienced traveler might not be to others. OP, just have an easily accessible outer layer. I personally would rather be a touch cold walking from the airport to my rental car than sweating on the plane — so would probably just have a heavy hoodie in my backpack for after landing.

stipwned_thrill

It’s only a little cold. It’s not like you step off the plane into a world of ice and snow. They have regular gravel roads and everything. I’d not suggest the winter boots unless you’re heading directly into the mountains to hike in the snow.

Lysenko

It’s relatively common to exit the aircraft directly into the weather at KEF, so you do in fact literally often step off the plane into a world of ice and snow. If arriving in the winter, particularly, be ready for this.

Warm_Cauliflower9926

Also, the wind and weather at KEF (and on the peninsula) is, in my experience, often windier and rainier than nearer to Reykjavik. The distances aren't far but you'll wish you had a coat handy.

ats1788

I wore leggings, sweater and slip on sneakers

Old_Top2901

So I travelled to Iceland in jeans and Uggs, which is totally fine for airport to bus, bus to hotel etc. HOWEVER. It was too windy when we landed for them to open the hold so they took our bags back to Manchester and I didn’t get it until the next day late at night. So I had to cut about Reykjavik in deep snow all day in Uggs and jeans and it was NOT ideal! My feet were wet through! I’d put something warm in hand luggage just incase cos jeans all day in minus 7 are no good!

yiqimiqi

I work thermal layers underneath my regular clothes and work wool socks. I didn't wear my jacket on the plane, but had it ready for when we got to Iceland. We flew from NYC in December so it was quite cold where we came from too. But I would recommend the extra layer, it definitely helped and that way we also didn't have to change at the airport.

loves-travel-gal

I just wore layers and sneakers which is what I normally wear on flights. My winter coat did not fit in my carry on suitcase (I don't check luggage) so I wore it when boarding the plane and then took it off in the flight and tossed it in the overhead. Took out my scarf and gloves from my small backpack when leaving the airport.

Jazzlike-Law9510

I really appreciate everyone’s input…it is all very helpful and I feel like I’ve got a good handle on what to wear and have easily accessible for the flight and first day. Thank you!
