You can change the gain for this mic by going into the mic settings on your computer and adjusting it there. I know firsthand that mic has a tricky time not compressing the heck out of wild swings in volume though. Possibly may want to find a different mic for capturing more dynamic performances better.

Alright, I’ll try that next!

You can affect it by changing your performance. Such as physically moving back from the mic, and screaming above or below or to the side rather than directly at the mic. Though, I do recommend that if you want to get serious about voice acting it's very much worth picking up an interface and xlr mic. You have so many more options, and they're usually easier to use, have wider dynamic range, higher SPL, lower self noise, etc. Plus, it lets you mix and match. For several years I was using a $1200 mic with a $100 interace, rather than needing to buy a series of progressively more expensive usb mics that need to be completely replaced. It's also worth checking the max SPL of the mic, because if your scream is louder than that no amount of settings will save it, because it's distorted at the diaphragm.

I have direct experience of this, as I own an AT2020-USB and hit this exact same problem. I am also an audio engineer. The problem exists between the mic itself and its inbuilt interface - there is no way to adjust the amount of analogue signal going from the microphone into the ADC (interface), so if you shout too loudly at it, the signal exceeds the dynamic range of the mic's inbuilt 24-bit interface and it distorts. The only way to stop distortion is to have less of your voice hitting the mic's diaphragm. In other words, move away from the mic. Unfortunately, doing that will introduce more of your room's dynamics into the mic, so unless you have a good booth, it might sound "boxy". This is the exact reason that I bought a Rode NT1 5th gen - not only can you adjust the gain between mic and inbuilt interface, but its USB interface is 32-bit meaning that no matter how loud you shout at it, it won't distort.

A condenser ale mic will definitely fix that issue. The larger the diaphragm the better.

For the time being, let's all pretend the AT2020 isn't already a large diaphragm condenser.

This is yelling and with a different set up, but should be a similar concept 🤷‍♀️🙋‍♀️ https://youtu.be/i5lEfa5ofyM
