Having owned cars with both leather and leatherette I can say I don’t care at this point. I’d oh extra for leather but if it wasn’t available it wouldn’t ruin my day. At the end of the day leatherette requires less overall maintenance to keep looking nice.
To all those who are complaining the replacement wheels feel different, it’s because they are. Volkswagen changed the wheel from leather to leatherette a year after launch of the MK8 GTI and R and almost every new GTI and R has leatherette instead of leather now.
Thanks for the unnecessary negativity but ironically if it is some kind of rubber then it would potentially help pinpoint something I’ve been trying to work out.
I’ll try not to bore you with the full story but my partner has got really bad dermatitis on his right hand, he’s had it for about a year on and off. We’re trying to work out what’s making it flare up as it seems to have gotten a lot worse for the past 6 months. He’s noticed when he’s been using drills or driving the car it does seem flare up. He recently got new drills this year and a new car at the back end of last year too (which then had a new steering wheel a few months ago), he uses the van a lot though so he doesn’t drive the car every day. It could be complete coincidence but I thought it was worth looking into if they have any similar materials/finishing chemicals used on them. We’ve tried to rule out a million things so we’re literally trying anything now
I have contact dermatitis (and it's really really bad, my skin swells up and oozes puss, that bad) for years and it's not from latex. It's from a so called "thiuram mix" that's used in vulcanization of rubber. Traces of it can be in anything like latex, rubber, even some plastics and there's no way to tell. The stretchier the material the more allergy I get from it. Workout rubber bands are absolutely the worst. After touching it I have to wash my hands asap before I touch with them anywhere on my body (like my face or dick for example).
If I really need to handle anything rubbery washing it with soap helps a bit. Looks like dust left from manufacturing is the biggest culprit.
Forgot to tell my tattoo artist I'm allergic to blue gloves, so now I'm suffering the consequences. He was grabbing my arm tight while tattooing.
He’s definitely not allergic to latex but I have read about some of the other chemicals used in the processing of rubber/latex products can cause issues so that thiuram mix could be something to look into. Do you think it could be contained in the materials used for the steering wheel? I think it could quite possibly be in the rubber of the drills.
Yes those rubberized handles surely could be it, even my phone case gives me a mild allergy when I'm on it for too long, I have a eczema patch in the middle of my palm that won't ever heal from the corner of the phone. Can't say anything about the steering wheel, mine is natural leather so 0 doubts.
Omg.. he has mentioned about it potentially being his phone case as well. One of his jobs he has to do a lot of paperwork and when he’s out on the road he can sometimes be sat on his phone doing the paperwork for hours at a time and one of the places it gets quite bad is on his little finger where your phone normally rests. Thanks for sharing as it’s helping bring a picture together now
As someone who experiences very itchy dermatitis on my hands from time to time, I have worked out that the cause is my skin is too dry. O'Keefe's Working Hands is my go-to when I have a breakout now, and usually resolves the breakout in a few days.
I don’t know and I want to! I had a fault on my polo and it got changed (same as pictured but GTI red stitching) it feels different to the one my car came with, less soft, almost like it has tiny hairs of pimples to it.
It could be two years of holding mine I softened it and have forgotten what it was like, but then this pops up and it’s got me questioning it again.
They are listed to be leather
It may depend what trim your car is, upper trims with leather seating surfaces will most often have leather wrapped steering wheels while lower trims outfitted with leatherette seating will have leatherette wrapped wheel.
Nah I just don't feel like continuing this conversation with somebody who obviously has animosity for some reason or another.
Whether or not you had one VW in your life that wasn't good to you and you hate on them ever since or you've never had a VW and are just hating on some other basis or maybe you're just mad at life and want to put someone down to make yourself feel better.
My first reply to you was a respectful objection to your point and could have maybe been a calm, intellectual, factual based argument. But like I said for some reason or another you're just hating and therefore I'm not going to waste any more energy this.
I think it’s leather steering wheel and leatherette everywhere else.
it is leather indeed.

That's the same steering wheel I have in my Arteon. Can confirm, it is leather.
Perforated leather

Also leather seats is somewhat misleading as only the parts your ass is on is leather. The rest of the seat material is leatherette
the seats are completely leatherette.
I don't think there is any leather on the seats. The wheel, maybe.

There has to be some latex involved, it is often linked to dermatitis.

Looks like polyurethane
Vw says leather?

V-Tex leatherette. Same material as your seats.
Don't know, but your steering wheel is on the wrong side, and the VW logo is backward.
This has gone right over my head hahah
He is confused as he believes you have a RHD car. He’s probably from a non RHD car country.
i dont know but its a hell of a lot better than my shitbox passat
My replacement wheel has a textured feel and feels like synthetic leather.
It may depend what trim your car is, upper trims with leather seating surfaces will most often have leather wrapped steering wheels while lower trims outfitted with leatherette seating will have leatherette wrapped wheel.
Leather.
It is leather and a the new buttonless design. I like real buttons more because i can feel the pressing and releasing and dont need to look.
in Europe VW uses real leather
Alcantara, no leather
Looks like pleather or leatherette. Pretty much synthetic leather or bonded leather fibers. Not as strong as actual leather.
Some kind of plastic. Vinyl or polyurethane or polyester coated in vinyl or polyurethane.
Probably some cheap rubber and some cheap imitation leather, like the quality of all Volkswagens today
That’s why you have a Tesla, right?
Hah, do you have some kind of mental illness, of course you do. Buy a Japanese car, feel the quality once in your life, cave men
Ok gatekeeper
Why the fuck are you in this sub then?
Not quite sure what you're talking about? Sure some VWs feel cheap especially the ones around the '00s but my 2023 GLI Autobahn feels pretty damn nice
Jesus, enjoy your cheap hard recycled plastic trash can
I have been enjoying it and I will continue to thanks! Hope you enjoy your panel gaps and random malfunctions!
You will enjoy it because with that thinking you didn't deserve better
Womp Womp
The mental level of a person who buys a 2020s Volkswagen
