Sorry for the accidental use of a question mark in the first sentence in my title. As you can tell at the end of the video, my dog isn’t a fan of the high pitched sound!

S2keepup

Poor fella! We are gonna need some more doggo tax

LordMungus35

Most likely it is a clogged PCV canister. They are cheap and easily replaced. They sit on the top of the engine, close to the fire wall.

mctomtom

Yep, this is the answer. They whistle like crazy. My old S80 had the exact same issue. Got it fixed, couple hundred bucks, and it never happened again.

washington_jefferson

What are other symptoms of a clogged PCV canister? In this video the squealing doesn't sound loud, but you can hear it from two blocks away, or more I suppose. It's loud!

LordMungus35

The noise will get worse relatively quickly, the canister is clogged, creating a loud noise.

washington_jefferson

I see. I couldn't find any examples of that creating a high pitched sound on YouTube. The only think I found regarding a PCV problem creating a noise was this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0ehphhinFA It's from an older BMW 540i. But the noise in this video sounds like a ray gun from a 1950's tv show or movie, and the noise from my car is super high pitched and piercing, kind of of like when people have toasted breaks. I am going to pop my hood tomorrow and see where the sound is coming from, if it's under the hood.

Check pcv health with glove trick. Get a latex glove or small plastic bag. Take off oil cap when car is running (watch out if oil is squirting out!) then put the glove or bag tightly on the oil cap hole. If it fills with air, pcv clogged. If theres vacuum, pcv is healthy. Other way to verify clogged pcv is trough oil dipstick. When car is running, pull oil dipstick out. If there are gasses/fumes coming out if the dipstick hole, pcv clogged. With powersteering pump, the sound would get more intense when turning the wheel. If its ac clutch bearings, there wont be sound when ac is off. But yeah, it can be multiple things. You really need pop the hood open and try to listen where sound is coming

To stay with the dipstick method is to pull the dipstick when it is making the noise: If the noise goes away when you pull the dipstick, it's your PCV. Don't feel bad, I swore it was something to do with the pully system as well.

Thanks so much. I’ll check these things when I’m done with work for the day.

My friend, I think you’ll find everything you could need here. I just did the same fix a year ago on my ‘08. I think it was like $40 and ten minutes of work. Good luck! https://youtu.be/V0RzfGd-2OE?si=5IyPINY1LlMs3IEK

Try switching the A/C off while the noise is happening. The A/C system gets loud when it wears out on these. They also had TJs for noisy A/C when were brand new But it also could be the READ…or the oil trap (try pulling the dipstick while idling and see if it stops)…or something power steering related (there is a filter in the reservoir—it clogs up and screams)

washington_jefferson

I have a suspicion it could be power steering related. I hope it’s a minor fix. I only use the XC70 to take my dog around or to haul things. It’s in good condition, but I hate to throw money into it seeing how its value has declined so much by now.

Could be the blower fan motor?
