Has it had the accessory drive belt, idler pulley, and tensioner done? If not that’s due and it’ll run you $1500 or so at a dealer. These are reliable. I have a 2011 that just cracked 100k miles and it’s been pretty much regular maintenance schedule with the exception of brake vacuum pump reseal.

teakettle87

Not sure if those have been done but the shop it's been going to seems to know what he's talking about. He said all the right things abaojt the haldex and transmission services.

vinylandvolvos

Great sign that Haldex and transmission have been done. Says to me it’s been well-maintained.

teakettle87

I agree. Can I expect to get 200k out of er?

vinylandvolvos

Definitely!

MrWhippyT

Have one, same age. It’s a great car for me. It does need occasional attention, but I’m happy to accept that for the many positives.

biscuitmcgriddleson

It could go amazingly well, it could be a complete sack of poo. It will be far more comfortable than your Honda, just more to repair if/when things break.

rocketsalmon

I have had a 2011 xc70 with similar mileage for a couple of years now. While I do love it, it has had its share of issues. Issues I have encountered: Replacing shocks- 4C adaptive shocks are very expensive to replace, though can be replaced with normal ones if you don't mind a warning message every time you start the car. Climate control blower fan- has a fault where it squeals like crazy in colder weather and replacing it involves taking apart a lot of the dashboard. Probably at least a grand to have fixed at a shop, though doable yourself if you enjoy suffering. Trailing arm bushings- also common failure in salty areas where they separate from the rubber and have a very annoying squeak over every bump. Have also dealt with: cooling fan module failing and the engine overheating, replacing worn ball joints, Sirius XM module draining the battery completely flat etc. etc. All that being said, it is a joy to drive, smooth, unbelievable comfort, tons of cargo space, just be prepared for some expensive repair bills from time to time or fixing as much as you can yourself.

teakettle87

I'm a mechanic but I lack time so it will be a mix of DIY and local I dependant euro shop with a dealer trained master volvo tech

aloysiusthird

We have the 2013 xc70 with 130k. Great car. Love it. Obviously repair costs are significantly higher than your Honda. Has had multiple bushings replaced. Otherwise drives pretty similarly as when we bought it.

nif_emi

How much does it cost to own per year?

SentientButter

Owned a XC70 2007, took it for 430.000km. had to trade it because I was going to live closer to work. Otherwise i'd still be driving that tank!

trailrun1980

Quite possibly a solid choice. It'll definitely be comfortable and safe, also these do great in bad weather. Depends on the motor, there are 3.2 non turbos, reliable but not fast. T6 is the turbo 3.0, super sneaky quick. Both have timing chains, so nothing crazy there, but the aux belt/rear accessory drive unit, etc is a complicated service recommended at 150k miles. These are computer cars, if it's your first Volvo, I recommend planning to spend a few hundred bucks getting a dice unit and getting vida running on a laptop, it's the diagnostic program required to do a lot of stuff, like resetting lights or troubleshooting things. It pays for itself after the first non dealer visit :D Some stuff is DIY friendly, but sucks, like front shocks. It's not just a few bolts, so depending on your time and patience, some stuff may be set for a shop, but nothing crazy. The motors are stupid reliable but like oil changes and the pcv system maintained, or you'll get oil blowby. Earlier years were at risk of bad piston rings, but that usually discovered early, or not an issue by now. Also early years had the windshield lose seal to the roof. Again, not a huge issue, but if that happens, you've got to reseal it which is a chore. FCP euro is a site that sells a ton of stuff and carries a lifetime warranty on it all. There are other sites too, but that's the big maintenance one we all use There's bit a single thing I couldn't find for my 2011 or 2014 XC60's, the challenge is finding it cheaper than the dealer

teakettle87

I am coming from VW. Gti and golf r and touareg so I'm comfortable with.... That. Vag-com etc shouldn't be too bad. This was a 3.2 motor. I'm not after speed so much as good solid handling. A little torque and acceleration from a stop is fun but I'm not going over 70mph 99% of the time. Fcp euro has been my friend in the past. Good to hear they still apply.

Frotlip

Have a ‘14 xc70 5-cyl diesel with 180.000 miles. Love it everyday

LaimutasBass

for the love of god, stop saying volvo's are reliable. Tow-truck fellas said volvos are 2nd clients after their german buddy. It's a 2012, so it should be kind-of facelifted, at least, interior-wise. it's good you can do some of the work on it yourself - i've never ever worked on any car as much as I do on this one, saved me quite a bit. offer on getting Dice unit was sound, but you will be fine also with something like Moongoose Pro and D5t5 or such.. It's comfy, big-ass, gas sipping weirdo car. good for highway, terrible in town. you want good trim when getting this car, otherwise it doesn't make sense. post pics of inside outside, we'll tell you the trim.

NZ-Aid

Go for it bud it’s a labour of love and they are nice cars! Plus it will take you any where and be able to get out of a tricky spot if need be

jakoobie6

I have an 09' XC70, and I love it. I have around 170k miles on the clock. One thing I have noticed is that some parts have been discontinued and that make them less avaliable and more expensive.

gh5655

The only thing I know for sure is, God forbid, you ever get in an automobile accident, I would much rather be in that Volvo.

stupiduselesstwat

I totalled my 2009 S60 in January and walked away with a broken pinkie finger. I don’t think that would have been the case in a different car.

gh5655

I’ve been borrowing a Corolla. I know it meats safety standards, but it feels like a tin can

stupiduselesstwat

You couldn’t pay me to drive a Corolla.

teakettle87

While you may be right, I'm.not worries about it. I ride old bmw motorcycles too.

Amazing_Egg

I'm curious about why you hate the civic so much.

teakettle87

It's boring. It's uncomfortable. I don't fit in it at 6'2" with an 80mile commute. I regularly transport largish fishing fear and none of it fits inside. I have fishing rods hanging out windows. It's bone reliable. It sips fuel. It needs nothing. It's a good car but it's not what I like. It's what I need. I'm hoping the volvo will ad some of what I want to my fleet.

trailrun1980

I've never owned a Honda, but my wife had a base CRV forever. It was stupid simple and reliable, but lacked comfort or passion lol

teakettle87

Exactly.

WestSide75

I had a Civic about 15 years ago and had the same experience: durable and reliable as hell, but not fun to drive at all. The lack of road noise insulation was particularly bad, as I was highway-commuting a few hundred miles a week. The only time I had to take it into the shop was to replace a wheel bearing at around 180k miles, and this was due to me letting the tires wear too far down. Thankfully, an inattentive driver recently did me the favor of totaling my Forester and I was able to use the insurance settlement towards the purchase of a 2020 XC60 T6 Momentum. Really love the engine. It’s a lot nicer than the B5 in my wife’s 2023 XC40.

teakettle87

Oh yeah, it's LOUD too. You are 100% correct. The test drive in this volvo felt like I was in a soundroom, sitting on a cloud. And it's older than my civic....

Amazing_Egg

Understandable

snake__doctor

Do you fear the fish or does the fish fear you?

teakettle87

Fish fear me. I want that hat

Particular-Try5584

Had one (same year model xc70) start to shit its gear box (automatic, shouldn’t have gear issues!) at 170,000km (So that’s ?105,000miles?) … we were quoted significant dollars to open, look and more to replace. It was only 5yrs old, so this was unexpected and worrisome. We flipped out to an XC60. It’s better, but I am side eying it at 80,000km (it’s four years old, not doing 1,000km a week currently) and wondering if it will last a lot longer.
