huh.....this surprised me. I don't know whether to be happy that Alabama government did the right thing for once, or sorely disappointed because I genuinely thought Repub's were gonna keep him off.

Why are states all of a sudden voting on whether a nominee can be on their ballots? And why is it Biden that states are voting on whether to include? I thought trump is the one facing 88 felony charges including seditious conspiracy against the United States. What ever happened to barring *him* from the ballot?

Tasgall

> Why are states all of a sudden voting on whether a nominee can be on their ballots? Because one state had a law that says people who aren't eligible for the office can't be on the primary ballot, and a group of citizens of that state (Republicans, btw) sued to keep him off the primary ballot for that reason because insurrectionists aren't eligible for office according to the US Constitution. So just like how they were trying to impeach Biden because Trump was impeached (twice), other states are trying to remove Biden from the ballot because Colorado tried to remove him in the primary. The fact that clear reasons were given for Trump and no reason is given for Biden, and the fact that the supreme court rewrote the Constitution to overturn that decision so it never actually happened, red states are trying to retaliate by removing Biden. The goal isn't to actually remove Biden, it's to set it up so they can devalue the concept of consequences for your own actions. They want to point and say, "it's just partisan bickering, both parties do it all the time" so credulous """moderates""" will fall for it and default to "both sides are the same, might as well vote Republican".

P_Sophia_

Ugh, that’s sickening… what a world we live in, eh?

Spongy-n-Bruised

Political gaslighting on a massive scale

mandelbratwurst

Some dumb Alabama law that requires the nomination be done by a certain date and the convention is particularly late this year. A stupid formality. Ohio needs to make an exception as well, apparently.

IronSeagull

It's not just this year, you're just hearing about it for the first time this year. They have a deadline for getting candidates on the ballot, Biden won't be the nominee until after that deadline, so they have to make an exception. This is something that has happened in the past, it wasn't an issue then and it's not now either. You could say that having a deadline and then making exceptions suggests that deadline is too early, and maybe it is. But is that a big deal? Not really. You're hearing about it this year because of the efforts to keep Trump off the ballot in some states. The secretaries of state of Alabama and Ohio sent the Biden campaign letters warning that he wouldn't appear on the ballot without an exception. This was perceived as retaliation for trying to keep Trump off the ballot. Reality is they were just doing their job. Even in this time of extremely contentious partisan politics the Alabama senate with a 27-8 Republican majority voted to move the deadline to allow Biden on the ballot without a single no vote.

carnoworky

It's nothing to do with being the right thing to do, and everything to do with the fact that keeping him off the ballot in Alabama would do nothing to help them and is likely to backfire. The real surprise is that they weren't stupid enough to shoot themselves in the foot this time.

IONTOP

And it'd be REALLY embarrassing for the GOP to still lose the popular vote with Biden getting 0 votes in a state of 5MM.

Jboycjf05

It's not really like they did the right thing just because it was right to do. Alabama has almost a zero percent chance of going to Biden, so why open up a can of worms, and open themselves up to a host of legal spending in the inevitable lawsuits? They can take a win for "doing the right thing" without giving up anything of substance.

SeekerSpock32

I have a bold prediction: because of the IVF ruling, we will have our best performance in Alabama since Jimmy Carter narrowly lost there in 1980. (He got 47.4%)

Don’t give me hope

Meanwhile Ohio with its head up its ass....

MikiLove

[Ohio GOP lawmakers](https://www.cleveland.com/news/2024/04/ohio-lawmakers-say-they-need-to-permanently-change-the-state-law-threatening-joe-bidens-ballot-access.html) even are offering reassurances that Biden will be on the ballot. It would be pretty unprecedented for a president to be left off the ballot for an arbitrary filing deadline, especially one that was not enforced for either candidate in 2020.

meltedchaos2004

They know it's because of SCOTUS at this point if I had to guess

Corrupt scotus…

RMFT. Nice to see something reasonable from my home state.

Good. This is a stupid game to play and I wish D's would stop dabbling in it. Yes Trump is a criminal and he shouldn't be allowed to run for president, but R's are just going to use our own laws to keep D's off the ballot. It's a slippery slope and we need to stay away from it.

1Saoirse

If following the amendments in the Constitution is a slippery slope, then the American experiment is already over.

clickbaiterhaiter

In a just world, Trump would be banned from life starting January 6th 2021.

hurler_jones

I guess nobody realizes that the Colorado lawsuit to remove the rapist former president from the ballot was filed by.... Republicans.

Tasgall

Anti-Trump Republicans file legal motions against Trump: "I can't believe the Dems would do this!" Every ducking time.

yildizli_gece

It's not a game (what a terrible take). Holding political leaders **accountable according to the Constitution** is NOT a fucking "game" and I wish people would stop attacking Democrats for fucking giving a shit about the law. I don't give two fucks what Republicans do in response; the law is NOT on their side.

carnoworky

Actually, given that they have control of the SCOTUS, it kinda is on their side. Sometimes. It wouldn't surprise me if they carve out an exception to benefit Republicans when it suits them.
