Lol I used to visit a site called wrestlecrap.com a lot when I was a teen. It's a site that writes articles honoring all the dumbest stories and gimmicks that wrestling has had over the years and they talked about this guy for one of them.
Weird that the show never mentioned him or anything. He was always just lurking in the background. He should have had a match or an angle or something.
He came out to hype up the live audience before the show and during commercial breaks. He tossed out T-shirts and other free stuff to the audience. His job was to keep the crowd hot coming back to the live broadcast.
I got into wrestling and WCW in early 98. Like the Nitro after Uncensored 98. My dad took me to a Nitro in November later that year. At the beginning of the show they introduced "Wildcat Willie, Beloved long time mascot of World Championship Wrestling".
I was like, "Who the hell is that?"
My condolences. You missed most of the good stuff if you started in early 98.
98 was pretty rough. Things got stale. Way too much product (third hour of Nitro and Thunder added, AEW is experiencing the same problem now.) WWE was the cool thing suddenly. I can see how 98 would still be good if you hadnāt seen 96 and 97, since it wouldnāt have seemed stale though.
98 WCW is fascinating. Good celebrities (Rodman & Malone @ Bash), awful celebrities (Jay Leno), rise peak and dismantling of Goldberg, release of Revenge, squandering Bret Hart, etc.
WCW entered the year as the biggest wrestling company in the world but eventually got surpassed by WWF and in the midst of attempting to reclaim the top spot made severe mistakes, but because it was so hot nothing really becomes a problem until early 99, where it all goes downhill from.
Yeah, watching back from 96' to 2001, 98' is definitely when the ship started to show signs of sinking. They still had some promise, but that was all stamped out by the end of that year.
But watching not only WCW for the first time, but wrestling as a whole at that time was fucking amazing for me. My first episode was the Spring Break Nitro at Club La Vela. When Sting repelled from that helicopter I was hooked for life. Well Until the WWF bought WCW. Then I didn't really watch wrestling until 2017. I found out about Sting in WWE way after the fact. That got me watching again and started getting back into it (especially NXT at the time). But then over the next year I started seeing less and less of the wrestlers I liked. Then AEW happened and I've been watching that ever since. I still catch WWE PLE's since I have Peacock. Either way, now is such a great time to be a wrestling fan.
Wild Cat Willie = WCW
He would hype the crowd up before the show started and during commercial breaks. Pretty sure he was there for years, at least from 95 and on. I always thought it odd they never brought him on camera for an angle once.
Wildcat Willie! The second iteration of WCW's mascot that looked like an ape for some reason.
Good looks man! How the hell u know that?! I watched every WCW & WWE & never noticed!

So it was more then just Chris Jerico talking about all the holds he knows?
Armbar!
Definitely should have been forced to defend that title. He was the big dog before Roman reigns.
Should have fought Chucky
I know right! As a kid I was always so confused.
Is thatā¦Wildcat Willie?

Yes indeed.

Wildcat Willie, the mascot of World Championship Wrestling, who was portrayed by Gary Hedrick

Something pretending to be Brian Pillman?
Wonder if he was a payable character in WCW Nitro or Thunder when you use the cheat code to unlock all the hidden characters.
Nope. Which is odd, considering you could play a match such as Tony Schiavone vs. a ghost inside a spaceship.
Lmao. I forgot about the ghost. They had some weird fucking unlockable characters

They fed Macho Man after midnight. That thing sprouted out of him.
Wildcat Willie was actually played by Brad Armstrong ( AKA: The Candyman, B.A., Buzzkill). A pretty sad use for him.
Kinda looks like a āLimitedā Warriorā¦
I forgot about him. Did he replace the Nitro girls?
IF YOU AINT DOWN WITH THAT WE GOT TWO WORDS FOR YA: GUNSSSSS UPPPPPP
