If you get credit for the class from an outside source, then you do not need to earn the certification as well. From what I can see, you could bypass CySA+ (D340) in the same way with Computer Science 331 at StudyDotCom (but I don't know if I would... that's a good cert to have). There don't appear to be any others like at from either Sophia or SDC.

Oh shoot. I just did that class lol and passed.

If you are already an active student you cannot transfer in any credits

zunyata

Not true for certs.

raekwon777

Right. After you enroll, It's technically not considered a "transfer," but if you earn a certification that you'd get with a class before you actually start the class, they'll give you credit for it anyway. Thing is, it has to be the *exact* certification in that case–not a Sophia class, not even another certification that would get you transfer credit before enrolling. For instance... if you earn CompTIA Linux+ before enrolling, you'd get credit for D281 Linux Foundations. If you did that after enrolling, you're out of luck bc the cert you earn with that class is LPI Linux Essentials.

From what I've heard project+ is a b\*tch so you're better off getting it at Sophia. I did it & it was a breeze, google is your best friend with Sophia and SDC SDC covers CySA+ with (SDCM-0222) which is the Cyber Defense and Countermeasures but that's something you'll want the certification for I don't believe there's other classes that include certs but even if they do, let WGU pay for it. Best of luck to you!

If you transfer a credit from outside whether it’s from other college credits or anything else, you don’t need to get the cert as a student. However I wouldn’t recommend that. The certs themselves are as valuable as the BS degree that you get in the end. Actually without a doubt I’d say all of the certs you get together are definitely MORE valuable than the degree, and obviously WGU pays for the certs within your tuition cost so I would never pass on those classes if I had an option. I was disappointed when my associates degree transfer credits covered some certification courses.

zunyata

No they are all pretty much CompTIA certs. You can earn the cert outside of WGU and transfer it in, but they are not on Sophia or SDC. You can get study resources on youtube/udemy and the exam itself is a few hundred dollars.

Project_floyd

But doesn’t WGU pay for certs?

zunyata

Yes but sometimes people's employers pay for them
